CEDAR CITY - Southern Utah University officials called Friday for University rules to prohibit students and alumni to have sex with animals after SUU Bird was caught having sex with a pony.
Wearing nothing but a T-shirt, SUU Bird was arrested by campus police in in Eccles Coliseum after the equestrian coach caught SUU Bird by surprise.
"He was caught in the stable, busy with the pony, and was arrested for animal mistreatment," said a university spokesperson.
For now, campus police set SUU Bird free because there are no current Southern Utah University rules under their Deportment code that prohibits the activity.
"There were no wounds or traces of violence. SUU Bird had sex with the animal. While that may be common in our neck of the woods, his incoherent and obsessive rambling about some university in California was disturbing," said the spokesperson.
School officials are calling for an amendment to the deportment code to make bestiality punishable.
"The reality is we are more concerned for the animal's welfare than we are for SUU Bird. Sex with an animal is a far-reaching infringement of its physical integrity and the animal can never consent to it. It is pure maltreatment and should therefore be punishable," said Southern University's president, Steve Bennion.
The controversy is nothing new for SUU officials. Recently, officials had to enforce a new rule to prevent students from dating siblings and first cousins.
