Offense, Defense...Special Teams...It doesn't matter.

As much as I'm the president of the Kevin Feeney and Arden Beachy fan clubs, if I could ever watch a player light up the field one more time it would be T.R. McDonald. Look at the stats that guy put up in an era where the Bison rarely threw the ball downfield. It's definitely a testament to the talent of a guy I would definitely like to see in the Bison Athletics hall of fame.

Chad Stark, played ball with him in High School. Great Guy!

It's hard to choose, but I would go with Stacy Robinson.

Got a go with Jeff Bentrim. I grew up watching him run the option to perfection. And led the Herd to four title games and 3 championships.

Phil Hanson or Steve Nelson. Hanson controlled the entire line of scrimmage.

Kevin Feeney:

When the Eagles made 4 and 26 on Sunday. I said to myself, 'McNabb is positively Feeney like.'

I've never seen anyone convert so many third and long's through shear force of will (and a good bit of athletic ability) than Kevin Feeney. He never got a ring, but he was Bison Pride personified.

Satter - most exciting thing ever, when he touched the ball you always thought he could score.

Bentrim - winning, perfection, desire, perfect option qb.

I'll go with my 3 favorite defensive players.

Tyrone Braxton total domination. Listen to Ed do the games the only name you ever heard was TYRON Braxton.

Phil Hanson just about killed Todd Kavash.

Jim Dick, once said he likes to hit'em so hard their eyes roll back in their head.

My favorite player was not a big star for the Bison, but I used to go to games to see him in just a few plays per game. He had about as much heart and probably more courage than any Bison player I've ever watched. If anyone else went to see Bison games to watch Steve LaQua break the "wedge" on kickoffs you know what I am talking about. The man is a lion.
Go Bison,
Bob

The great Bruce Airheart. Fast, tough, played both ways much of the time and fought through the era of 0-10 to 10-1 in 1964.

Jeff Bentrim. It was an honor to get watch him during undergrad school.

I would have to go with Arden Beechy. The only NDSU player that I have really ever rooted for. It was sad to see his Senior year end the way it did...

Heck, I can't even pick my favorite player at a position. or favorite nickname. There have been so many great ones. I'll just mention one that hasn't been mentioned yet (although about 50 come to mind) - Paul Nielson, nose tackle.

I'll have to go with Ludwig Milfors at kicker based on the name alone.

I'd like to raise a glass to the careers of father and son:

Joe and Matt Roller. Both fine men and fine football players.

Ludwig was terrible. It's a damn good thing we are were so far ahead that PAT's typically didn't matter. I would also second the Roller comment. Joe was a great man.......they don't come any better, and from what I hear, Matt is not very far behind.

Kubisz is definitely in my list of Top 10 Bison Kickers Of Fairly Recent Times :)

although he was arguably not the best, he is remembered fondly. I sweated out a lot of his kicks. Make that another one for Ken Kubisz.

But there is another great BISON out there. He is my neighbor and Im good friends with his younger brother. Jerry Dahl is the man Im taking about.

What makes Jerry so great? In 1972 he had 10 QB sacks and blocked a punt against the whioux, recoverd it and ran it in for the winning TD.

In 1973 he had 31 QB sacks (tieing him with Phil Hanson for total number of carreer sacks at 41 and giving him the single season record of 31) and again, blocked a punt by the whioux, recoverd it and returned if for the winning TD. Not bad.

I don't think any of the kickers of the Morton, Solomonson, and Hager eras will remind anyone of Aaron Pederson. *But never in the history of organized football has an extra point been so exciting. *I remember seeing a game program from a few years back that highlighted a 1987 game with St. Cloud. *We won 24-3. *You're probably thinking three TD's and a field goal. *Nope, four touchdowns and four missed extra points (though some of those may have been two point conversions, I can't remember).

JBB

Yea, I seem to remember that we would frequently go for 2 if we missed an extra pt. But hey, Ludi could kick a few.

Kubisz made PATs exciting by trying to put the kicks on top of the BSA (try doing that next time you're in Fargo), not by missing them.

NDSU had good kickers until Rocky took over.

1) Jeff Bentrim (tough option QB, great leader, nose for the goal line, 3 national titles)
2) Chris Simdorn (surprised no one mentioned him yet, another great leader and option QB, 2 national titles)
3) Tony Satter (avg. 10 yards/carry his entire career)
4) Most of the offensive lines of the 1980's and early 1990's (much as the QB's and RB's get the credit the guys in the trenches made it all possible. Many of the blowouts were due to an explosive line that knocked the D-line two yards back and opened holes a truck could drive though). Mike Whetstone, Greg Hagfors and Mike Favor to mention a few.
I have talked to Tony Satter and Jeff Bentrim at the NDSU - UND game satellite site here in Sioux Falls and they are both outstanding indivduals. Tony was at the first one I set up back in 1994 and Jeff attended last years game as he was in town from Houston visiting a local friend. What really impressed me about Jeff was how humble he was and how he still immediately credits others on the team, especially the line for his success. He even noted how things were switched around when he played more of a minor role at Saskatchewan. He was glad to have experienced the other side of a winning team, those who work hard, make contributions, but are not the starters or heroes. As a former offensive lineman (no I did not play at NDSU) I could really appreciate his comments.

Best Senior spot on The Rocky Show had to be Tony Satter's. His Senior spot on the show had highlights put to the MC Hammer song "Can't Touch This". Best part was Tony running into the end zone against the Sioux and pointing to the student section "Can't touch this!"

I know nothing of the man except for his monster single game and single season sack totals...Jerry Dahl

and if anyone knows, what ever happened to him?

JBB
01-29-2004, 12:15 PM
Yes, Jerry lives near Willmar, MN. *He is a happy family man with a few discomforts from his playing days. *I dont know Jerry well but his younger brother and I are good friends. *

Jerry Dahl Tied for career and holds the single season sack record (single season 31!!!!), *Blocked und punts 2 consecutive yrs in a row, recoverd them and returned them for TDs winning both games. *I guess he wanted the fans in both cities to see a block punt returned for a TD to win the big game. *Thats probably why he is the central figure in the print of great BISON players that was distributed a few years back.

Well,

One of my favorite players to watch was: Mr. Jerome Cheatham

He could cover guys with ease and would be the hurt on would be receivers.

Unfortunately, he tore his achilles is senior year and couldn't play his final year at NDSU.

That was painful to see and hear.

Defense wins championships, baby!

I think my favorite NDSU kicker was the guy who missed a chip shot against SCSU in Fargo. ;) Who was that guy? Was he from Sweden or something? Because I remember an old guy yelling "put that kicker on a boat and send him back to Sweden(?)" (or something like that)

I was so happy with the win because the trip before we lost to NDSU 60 something to 3. 1990? I know a lineman who played in that game and he swears in the 4th quarter the clock was running backwards. :o
