we have had 2 hours to bask in our victory

next week will be a huge test, barring an upset- C-P should come in undefeated and ranked in the top 10 in the nation. Their defense is VERY good- we can't expect to run the ball down their throats. Their offense is just OK though. We need another big crowd of 15k plus as the our next two opponents could be the best ever to visit the Fabulous FargoDome

At home, I believe NDSU can defeat Cal-Poly. If the game was at Cal-Poly it would be a diffrent story this year.

Cal-Poly had a good day today, but I think they are going to come to Fargo overly confident and that may be their downfall and an end to their undefeated season.

I don't think that Cal Poly is becoming anywhere near overconfident. Rich Ellerson's comments after every game reflect this. He's been critical of the offense on a number of occasions. He was pretty happy after the win over Texas State though. After the Texas State game a reporter asked him about NDSU and his reply was, ask him in a couple of days because all he had been thinking about was Texas State, and he hasn't had a chance to think about NDSU.

I think that Cal Poly is not overlooking anyone at this point, and just trying to not make the same mistakes that were made in previous games. Being undefeated just gives the other teams more incentive to play well, and Cal Poly knows this. It's just another reason not to look past anyone.

Hey, Cal_poly_Mustang, sounds like your team has solved its offensive problems with the new QB, Anthony Garnett (if that name sounds familiar to Bison fans, it's because NDSU had an excellent sprinter by that name just a couple years ago).

Anyway, almost 600 yards of offense in a game with a rainstorm in the middle of it? Ouch. You won't have to worry about the elements in Fargo.

I'm looking forward to another good game (against quality competition) at the Fargodome. Both teams had better bring their "A" game. And the 12th man has to step up as well!

how was the tailgating turnout this week? I should be back for the Poly game and hope to do some tailgating prior.

Bisonguy

Very slow starting, lots didn't open until 9:06, only about ten vehicles on the north side of the entrance to start with (wind from north), south side had more people, but very sparsely parked, seemed to pick up about 10:00 or 10:30 when the lots then appeared pretty full (may have been closer to 11:00). Very cold and very windy day.

All or part of this description may be factually incorrect. Bisonguy had a whiskey breakfast, and my judgement and memory might not have been the greatest. ::)

Iwalked through most of the tailgaiting lot looking for the Battle Wagon and it was packed. They had the stage up with revelers around it cheering on the BISON. Grills were still going but people were starting to head in. Then I got my whiskey lunch. The east lot was about 3/4 full when we pulled in and the north lot wasnt even half full, but it was a late arriving crowd, it was a great duck hunting day cold, grey, breezy but no or very little rain. Great Tailgating weather.

The best in outdoor tailgating, indoor football! :)

Cal-Polyl @ NDSU *

This is a tough game for the BISON. Its the Thunderbirds all over again, except these guys have been winning and are ranked as high as #7. If we hadnt won last week with only 53 yds rushing, no defensive/special team TDs and still scored 27 I dont think I could pick the BISON. As it is I see a BISON win as an upset along the lines of University of Montana. Why do I think the BISON can win?

1) Tony Stauss is playing better than Cordel Webb
2) Strength of the offensive line
3) Our defense is as good as theirs
4) The Fabulous Fargo Dome

tony

Anthony Garnett is going to get the start at QB for Cal Poly, so I don't think a Cordel Webb v Tony Stauss comparision means much. Garnett completed 77% of his passes last week (just under 30 yards per completion too) while rushing 20 times for 74 yards in his first start for the Mustangs.

Correction: this was Garnett's second start.

Cal_Poly_Mustang

I just noticed that the last time Cal Poly was in the playoffs (DII) they lost 47-0 to NDSU. Yikes!!! Overall NDSU leads the series 2 to 1. Hopefully the Mustangs will be able to avenge the playoff thumping that NDSU dished out, and tie up the series record.

Thats right, that completly slipped my mind. *He had 4 TDs last week with 1 rushing TD. *Tony had 2 TD passes last week. *

Garnett is a big concern and might be able to spark what has been a rather anemic passing game for the Mustangs.

Unless Anthony Garnett gets hurt or struggles, I don't think Cordel Webb is going to play.

Yea, I corrected myself. *Did Garnett replace Webb due to injury or performance and how did he do his first time out? *I think last week was his second start wasnt it?

Cal_Poly_Mustang
10-19-2004, 02:21 PM
Garnett is playing in place of Webb and Mende because they both had difficulties keeping control of the ball. Garnett played ok against SUU. He was under 50% in completions, with most of them being under thrown, or thrown behind the receivers. It was his first start in a while and maybe it was just nerves. He was 100% better in the game against Texas State. If he plays as well as he did against Texas State, NDSU is going to be in trouble.

First off grettings to all from sunny Iraq. Things are going well here. I was excited to get to listen to my first game over the internet here via the SUU station. It was good to hear the game. We definately tried to make it interesting.

I just was thinking about the above game. If I remember correctly it had snowed the day before that game and snowballs in the crowd was a problem (a drunken friend was booted out for throwing one). There was a group of students with their shirts off chanting "IT ISN'T EVEN COLD" as cal poly players were standing huddled and shivering on the sidelines. That was a great game. Brings back memories.

Take care-I am trying to keep read online on this board as things are happening.

Expect Cal Poly to keep the offense close to the vest and rely on defense and field position. Last year the Bison fans were suprised at how quick the Davis D was on the turf. Cal Poly will be even faster. If they get a 10 point lead, forget about it. The offense had a good performance last week but I don't think Ellerson will take as many chances throwing the ball downfield on the road. There will probably be many short passes to Jones and Russell and either of them can break one.

I think this will be a helluva game. Hopefully the bison fill the dome? I see it 26-20 Cal-Poly.....but the team with the ball last could win it. NDSU needs to hang on to the ball and not get down 2 scores.

JBB

Heres a look at the 2 QBs:

Garnett:

PASSING GP Effic Att-Cmp-Int Pct Yds TD Lng Avg/G
----------------------------------------------------------
A Garnett 3 181.30 41-22-3 53.7 498 5 88 166.0

Stauss:

PASSING GP-GS Effic Att-Cmp-Int Pct Yds TD Lng Avg/G
------------------------------------------------------------------
T Stauss 7-7 139.70 158-105-8 66.5 1136 11 42 162.3

They look pretty similar except for the long ball. Garnett had a 74 yarder last week as well as the 88 yd scoring strike.

I think it will be a close game, how come I don't hear more SDSU fans on this board offer a comparison or a predicition? They played Cal-Poly tough on the road. Hopefully the jet lag and noisy crowd will combine with a jacked up Bison team to be a nasty combination.

Someone has to be a big homer and pick the Bison big. Cal-Poly is a good team. Most people will be conservative and pick a close game and a Cal-Poly win. The score will be closer at the end, but the Bison will break out early and score 4 TD's in the first half 28-7. Cal-Poly will adjust and hold NDSU to 1 TD in the second half. Cal-Poly will score three in the second half. Bison 35, Cal-Poly 28. Why, Home Field advantage.

Bison score on a 20 yard run by Steffes. Sounds like the coaches have prepared well. Defense sounds strong.

Both defenses playing very solid. Bison offense was moving when Stauss threw the int.

tony
10-23-2004, 08:19 PM
Well, actually NDSU is running a little better than I thought they would. Steffes must have about 80 yards. The interception Stauss threw was just a great play by their defensive back.

Have to see if our defense can shut them down in the second half.

kchats
10-23-2004, 08:22 PM
Bison get the ball to start the second half. Look for a big dose of Kyle Steffes since he is running so well. They need to throw the ball to the tightend a little further downfield. Maybe about 10 to 15 yard passes. Offense needs to sustain drives to give the defense a bit of a rest. Cal-Poly sounds really good however. They are moving the ball very well even though their QB is pretty unaccurate. He does seem to make the plays when they count on third downs.

I just came from the game. The defense is superb, the punt team scares the hell out of me. Cal-Poly defense is easy - We dare you to pass!! We had open guys all day, he just didn't see the field. He was too nervous or something, all his passes were overthrown unless they were thrown into double coverage. We are a very good DIAA football team but our offense is too one dimensional to crack the top 25.

JBNJBQ
10-23-2004, 09:51 PM
You have a good running back that doesn't seem to be getting the yards he is capable of and your quarterback is throwing interceptions. Sounds to me like an o-line problem.

99Bison
10-23-2004, 10:43 PM
General comments on the game. To address this thread though, Stauss had plenty of time to throw the ball. The O-line did fine, the QB and play calling was the terrible part this game.

1. Worst offensive coaching job I have ever seen.
-We could have had 300 yards rushing, even with the 7-8 guys up all the time.
-Extremely predictable play calling.
-Stauss was off again, yet he is the only one we gave chances too. Kept beating a dead horse trying to get him to go! Run the ball!
-Steffes on a roll, fired up, yet they sit him down. This taking turns at RB is absolutely rediculous.
- From the 2 yard line, 3rd down, stauss and white timing off all day, through your favorite pass to him with 3 defenders looking for it duh, no.
-Then don't go for the lead in 4th that late in the game on 4th and 2. If you don't make it they start at the 2 vs the 40 (because of our kick offs).
-Next don't try a 41 yard field goal on 4th and 7 to tie the game.

2. Stauss was terrible. Duh.
-Close game, Stauss in, we lost. Duh.
-1 yard passes galore, all day to throw only looks at one guy. Oh wait a minute, broken record.
- Stauss doesn't understand what it takes to actually want to WIN the game, I mean really have the desire to. So what if you are off, grind it out, figure it out, just do it!
-In other words, corporate QB, i.e. middle manager in the corporate offense, ah the playing field isn't a big company office.

3. Ah punt team coaching, why did we not learn the whole first half about having a guy back to receive the kick?

4. Defense did a good job, exceptional at turnovers.
-Poly offense got extremely conservative once ahead.
-Poly being behind would have been different, they actually marched down the field 2 or 3 times in a row by the time they went ahead.

5. I feel like a broken record every week since unc, same things over and over again...

6. Attendence was disappointing, this should have been a good game for anyone to watch.
-crowd that was there was pretty good.
-student section was extremely disappointing, they were missing 1-2k students, not even half full. Perhaps more, not sure what the student sections hold, perhaps they were the difference between 11 ang 15 k. Actually I thought there were more people in the rest of the stands and walking around than last week.

Montana State 17, South Dakota State 10.
7:34 remaining in the game.

Nothing agains stauss as a person, but in sports there are winners and there are good players. Stauss in big games over the past 2 years has been average at best. Those games are where the true prime time players step it up. It is not about stats. The QB really has to be the leader or a large part of stepping it up. Walker seems have the winner potential, and Stauss has proven not to. Sitting Walker now may take the fire out of him. Don't do it, he is the future!

Besides, we have had a few other freshman QB's get a chance when the "starter" performed poorly and they turned out quite all right!

Hmm, what fun the season could have been...

JBB some jack --- behind my brother asked him if he minded sitting down on a 3rd down defensive play when everyone was up, he told him yes he did mind. We also had some jack---s move from behind us because they didnt have a pulse. The Teamakers Thunderzone as a whole was pretty good again this game, lets weed out the living dead and fill section 21 next year with passonate fans. We REFUSE to give in to the living dead, if you dont like it, switch seats. I know the last 2 games our section was responsible for a couple turnovers , bad snaps etc. Just another game that should have been a WIN. Lets see the character of this team next week, and lets see if the coaching staff makes some changes. And by the way, someone has been noticing, as the last 2 games we have had the dance team and cheer squad in front of our section for the first time all year !!

Heres the story Wyo,

We tailgated at m¥ mothers until noon, my wife myself and my mother, *we had the car parked by 12.30. *I dropped them off and headed toward the Battle Wagon, the only sensible place to be just before kickoff in front of what should have been the biggest BISON game ever at the FFD. *

Well, I was just getting to the west lot and a guy says you got a ticket, yes I said are you with the Battle Wagon. *He said yes, great revelry and off to his mini bus that wasnt the battle wagon but was very fertile ground for BISON fans. I traded the ticket for drinks. *

I was with Glenn, Randy and John, they also had the big bus that was broken down on Cnty Rd 20. *These guys are from the general Crookston area, are great BISON fans, and we had a blast wasting away most of the first qtr.

Glenn and i went in. *I went to my seat, started to get into the game. *This women in front of me started holding her ears and looking back at me! *Eventually asking me to quiet down. *I told her that she wasnt at a movie, she was at a football stadium. *Her husband and daughter glared at me and I glared back. *I was really irritated and started saying things like be quiet, Im trying to watch the game. *

My wife gave me *a nudge and I said I have to go to the bathroom. *I walked around the entire arena, returned to my seat. *The regulars were patting *my back and welcoming me back. *But I couldnt get over it. *I was so mad I realized I had to leave and I did.

I went to Buffalo Wild Wings and met a mentor, Wi-elly. *He told me I should return and try to get along with everyone. *By taking such *a hard core position I had limited my options and cost myself. *He may be right. *

Wi-elly may have been Carlos Castanada. *When we were done talking, the game was over and I went to pick up my wife and mom.

Im still mad as hell and will go no further than the tailgate lot at this time. *

Tough loss for the BISON. *Dont lose heart, look at UCDs record last season when they were in the same position we are now. *This is a great team that will dominate in the yrs to come.

Field position was huge in this game. Unfortunately, NDSU was on the long end of the field most of the time.

Stauss didn't have his best game, but there's eleven Bison on the field at a time and a bunch of coaches off the field that can make plays, as well.

A valiant effort put forth by the Bison, but it wasn't enough for the win. Remember, Cal-Poly was the sixth (or fifth by the more respected Sports Network poll) ranked team in all of I-AA. Yeah, NDSU didn't win, but they proved they can hang with some of the best I-AA has to offer. That's saying a lot in the first year of I-AA competition. The Bison will be a force in I-AA in the future (near-term future).

I think the returners were more concerned about being deep safeties than returning the ball. CP wasn't using a typical formation, and they might frequently run a fake out of it.

To those of you that don't get over to the Insider, I just have to make a comment. To those of you that weren't there, the offensive line was superb most of the day. I don't know what convinced the offensive coaching staff that they couldn't run on Poly but it was clear they were wrong. When they did run they were successful, but this staff is in love with the 1 to 2 yard passes to the wideouts which failed miserably, but that didn't stop them from calling those plays. Why make your wide outs into running backs when they couldn't deliver and your runningbacks into blockers when they were delivering. This is the third game they've thrown away. It could have been a great year. You guys are absolutely right, its time for Walker.

Your "Reaction the the Action" hit the nail on the head. I think you should send that on to Coach Bohl! How long are they going to stick with Albin? I have not seen one thing I like out of his offense, just a lot of things that make me go "why in the heck are they doing that!" I must say, when Coach Albin was on the Coaches Show with Phil Hansen, he didn't impress me either. I feel the pain of the defensive players. They come up big time and time again only to have horrible offensive playcalling make it go all for not! Oh what could have been....

The offensive center almost runs down the defender returning the Int for a TD. I sure hope this guy gets the chance to play at the next level!

Holiday, you are right on target. *This really could have been a great season.......but it isn't......get Stauss out of there and bring on WALKER!!! *Time to play for the future *since this season is now shot!

And JBB.......hang in there. Tell those comatose bastards to go to hell if they don't want to CHEER for the Bison!

To elaborate further on Bob Holiday's comments, I'm disappointed in the fact when they do run up the gut on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th and shorts to go, that they seem to do so with Chapman. I feel Steffes, Frank or Roehl are better suited for such runs. This is nothing against Chapman. Its just that Physically, Steffes, Frank or Roehl are better suited to get those tough yards. But what do I know.... ??? ??? ???

I noticed that too, great effort by Hunt.
