It's time for a youth movement.

The transfer portal hit the secondary in a big way. Am I worried? Not at all because we've been able to easily replace starters in the past with either freshman or transfers and we didn't miss a beat. Don't believe me?

What do Eubanks, Grimsley, Urzendowski, Ryan Smith, Josh Hayes, Colton Heagle, Bruce Anderson and Chase Morlock have in common? They all played an impact role as a TRUE freshman. Those are just a few

We lose a stud like Jalen Allison to injury before the JMU game? A redshirt freshman Marquise Bridges steps in after converting from WR and he's immediately an impact player. Need some depth at corner? Andre Martin is a 1 year grad transfer and makes an immediate impact. Bryan Shepherd, a D2 player at Nebraska Omaha plays 14 games in year 1 and becomes an impact player. 2010 we needed a corner? How about redshirt freshman Marcus Williams?

In 2010, we needed a linebacker and safety. Chad Willson and John Pike transfer in and are impact players on our first National Championship team. Speaking of 2011, mid season a redshirt freshman from nowhere ND named Travis Beck is inserted into the lineup and redshirt freshman Carlton Littlejohn starts to emerge.

We need a running back almost every year. Kobe plays as a true freshman. 2016, True Freshman Bruce Anderson gets hurt. Guess who steps in? Redshirt Freshman Ty Brooks. How about redshirt Freshman Lance Dunn? In 2017, we lose so many running backs to injury, a freshman named Seth Wilson steps in and we don't miss a beat. How about Chase Morlock playing in 15 games as a true freshman? We needed a fullback badly, how about redshirt freshman Andrew Bonnet?

We needed depth on the D-line in 2010. A guy named Cole Jirik, who was a skinny freshman in 2009 ads a ton of weight and steps in and is a 4 year starter. We needed improvement at the nose, how about redshirt freshman Ryan Drevlow?

2011 we need to replace Colter Boyer. A redshirt Freshman named Kyle Emanuel steps in and is a 4 year starter and future NFL player. Brayden Thomas becomes an impact player late in year 1. D Tackle is thin. Coster Ching moves from TE to DT and he's an immediate impact guy

2010 early season, our O-line is really struggling. We insert a freshman named Billy Turner at LT and move Paul Cornick to RG. Suddenly we are much better. A few years later, we have another hole to fill, so we plug in a walk on redshirt freshman at RT named Joe Haeg.

The common theme is either true freshman or redshirt freshman. Point is we can replace all these guys and we have time to do it. We may be able to actually upgrade. Will it be a redshirt freshman, talented true freshman or the transfer portal? Maybe a guy who has been waiting for his opportunity.

Not sure but I expect to be surprised. It's not always the 3 star stud with a dozen offers. It's sometimes the small town kid like Jackson Hankey, Travis Beck or Ryan Drevlow.

So look out for young guys like Toby Anene, McCaslin, Gannon Williams, Darius Givance, Jaquise Alexander, Huber, Magin, Logan Larson, Altepeter, Kaden Zenzen, Mekhi Collins, or Hegerle, Maybe it will be a true freshman like Jailen Duffie, Pickett, CharMar, Najee Nelson, Crumby, Noah Taylor or Azure? Maybe it's the kid with 0 offers. Maybe Enock Sibomana, Bryce Lance or Kpeenu are now ready to be the guy. Maybe the coaching staff, who now had extra scholarships go find some big time under the radar recuits in the next few weeks or the perfect transfer

So to the players who transfered out, good luck and thanks for your time here. The young guys may be hungrier to play and less worried about an NFL future 4 years from now.

It's time for some leadership. Whether it's by coaches or, more preferably, by the players. Attitude reflects leadership.

Many of our veterans seemed more concerned with their NFL aspirations than winning a National Championship. No hunger. A player who is trying to not get hurt whiffs on an easy tackle in the biggest game. Not a hungry player. Some players were better as a freshman.

Now I'm starting to get why the coaches love a guy like Jake Kava. Not the biggest guy but he is a great leader and he actually cares and gives full effort. Its shocking a 6-1 converted linebacker from Fargo is a solid D1, DE. He knows he's probably not an NFL prospect but he still brings something big to the table. We really need guys like him to lead and push the younger DEs who are probably more talented than he is. He is the type of player I want to see as a captain as a senior.

Good thoughts, HerdBot.

That Bridges 2017 game was one for the ages. And unheralded. No one knew who he was before that game.

I'm still very much pissed about 2 Sundays ago. Curbstomped by the southern team in Frisco?! For years Bison fans have said, "No big deal when we lose to sdsu in reg. season...because "It's their SUPER BOWL, dontcha know!" Now they actually beat us IN the actual Super Bowl, and now look at us...

The nice thing about these fr is they get Entz from day 1. He gets to establish his signature champion acumen.

They are "his guys" since Klieman doesnt have his prints on them.

Entz actually has a pretty good championship acumen.

He has won the National Championship 50% of the time, made the National Championship game 75% of the time, and made quartfinals 100% of the time. Only major hiccup was the fake covid season. If you remove that year he has won the Natty 2 of 3 years and made it every year He has twice as many National Championships as John Stiegelmeier

He was also the DC under Klieman and recruited many current players

This is a good point. Most schools would kill to have a coach with these results.

After this season though, Entz does have some work to do. We need to improve our offensive schemes one way or another. The days of just manhandling everyone else seem to be over.

How many of those players did Entz recruit?

I would say he wasn't their regional/original recruiter but guessing he was HC at time most signed. Edit....Bussey, Jones, Gonella, Hart, Sigle, Eubanks and maybe more were all brought here under his watch. So if these guys are all going FBS how can they be recruiting the wrong guys....according to Crapo at least?

ABOVE, I the Bolded are players that are no longer on the roster. 18 Scholarship players. 9 remain. That's 50%. Of the 9 that left, Sigle, Eubanks, and Hart were good players who contributed, so it's not like it was talent.

4 of the 12 remain, but Hastings never signed. He got a full ride at USD

By comparison, let's take a look at the 2009-2010 recruiting classes, one of our best ever. Retention is so high, I can simply bold the players who left. Those back to back classes built the dynasty. HOWEVER, the 2011 class kind of sucked because the 2009-2010 were so good

A better comparison would probably be 2015, 1st year for Klieman's recruits?

You're going to have classes with high attrition if the team is really good. 2009-2010 was our best back to back classses in history. That mean the 2011 class kind of sucked.

Then again if the transfer portal was available post 2011, would it have been different? Would guys like Billy Turner, Emmamual and Crockett stuck around?

Also the extra covid year really fucked up rosters. Some players got an extra year by transfering. Kobe, Dom Jones and Hayes fit that bill

I'm inclined to think its a bit of both for us right now.
We got stubborn on playcalling based on having superior talent.

From KState site:

Klieman, a proven winner with a championship history, was named the 35th head football coach in Kansas State history on December 10, 2018

It's just the vehicle the student athletes can now use if they want to transfer. The reason they can transfer much easier is they no longer lose a year of eligibility if they transfer up or the same level.

That is significant. They also dont have to sit out a year where before you wouldnt sit out unless you transfered down

Did they lose a year before or did they have to sit out a year? Or both? It seems like that was a lifetime ago and I can't remember
