Yeah I got a lot of things wrong in that post. It’s Walt, not Bob Odegaard. I was confusing Walt’s first name with Steve’s dad first name Good grief it sucks getting old. I edited my original post to look slightly less stupid.

I hate to be a damp blanket but should we be concerned that we have only one total recruit in this group from the states of Missouri, Florida, Georgia, and Texas? Seems like we've had better luck with some speed guys from those locations in the past.

Some interesting news, re: transfer portal guys....on Izzo's show, they mentioned that we'd be "accepting" three portal kids....Hunter Zenzen and Blake Peterson from Iowa State, along with Marcus Sheppard (I believe), a CB from Bowling Green. If all are true, those three each should be impact guys next Fall.

They're also usually the ones transferring out early too. Would be nice to hit on a few more Christian Watsons but they are far and few between IMO.

Maybe not directly answering your question regarding today's class that signed, but I seem to remember us getting some solid athletes from the states you mentioned in the later signing period. I'm assuming we have a couple of schollies remaining for those exact players.

Larkin wanted to play WR, NDSU recruiting him as a defensive back.
Pieper took an FBS offer to Iowa.

Feels like we are light on Oline signings??

Four OL- Beau Johnson, Jack Liwienski, Austin Schultz, and Nate Schneckloth

Two LB- Josh Hendricks and Jaiden Pickett

Six Defensive Line- DE Victor Isele, DE Abraham Meyers, DE Brennan Palmer, DT Keenan Wilson, plus two portal transfers in DEs Blake Peterson and Hunter Zenzen

But you are right, no WRs. Maybe a position they look at in the second signing day or through the portal?

We only have one senior WR on the roster (Mathis) and 8 listed as redshirt freshman or true freshman.

8 true freshman defensive lineman currently listed, no senior DT's. COVID year messed up the balance that is usually in the roster and will still be having an effect for two more years as guys decide whether to use the extra year or move on; only list 7 sophomores right now.

Excited to see Blake Petersen; have watched him at Iowa State. Wasn't asked to do much in a 3-3-5 defense, but he's a big DE for FCS that will help with Waege's departure. Was very much hoping he would end up at the correct xDSU.

That is my worry as well....however, you can push back that we had a ton of receivers when we started the year, and just no room for them. With that said, if one of them was truly lighting it up, you have think they would have played.

I here you. A couple of thoughts. With 2 losses fairly early in season, coaches may have decided they couldn’t risk playing young WRs in critical spots. Also, we didn’t have a ton of blowouts. Lastly, I feel like we might not be following our long-time rule/policy of putting your best players on the field regardless of age/year/time on roster.

wan2bqb
12-21-2022, 06:17 PM
I think the Covid year and super seniors has made it much more difficult to manage rosters and recruiting. You have guys thinking they are going to crack the roster in year 2 or 3 and all of the sudden they dont because the guy who was supposed to be gone is still there with an extra year and all the experience. If you play them (freshman) that first year then all of the sudden you gain extra years kids, you end up with more kids leaving all at the same time. Those with and without covid years. Its a struggle to juggle Im sure.

Mane and tail. He uses an original Verticoli Brush. Perfectly balanced, with low drag and minimal torque, the Verticoli is based on the mythical brush that was handmade in Italy and carved out of illegal whalebone.

I saw somewhere today the number of Bison recruits in the top 20/30 from their respective state. It was an impressive list. I was curious to see where the Indiana top 30 went. Of course these rankings are very subjective and often wrong, but it's still an interesting comparison.

https://highschoolfootballamerica.com/top-indiana-high-school-football-players-for-the-2022-season/

These were commits, and I haven't found a full list of signings yet. Only 1 was committed to an FCS program (Illinois State #29). 14 are P5 and not surprisingly mostly B1G. 12 were G5 with 9 to the MAC (3 each for Ball State and Western Michigan). Indiana often ranks in the 15-20 ranking for all states. Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, and Nebraska are 25-35. The other MAC states (Illinois, Michigan, Ohio) are also top 15 states. There are several FBS schools in these states so that talent gets spread out, but the MAC does have a lot of talent.

This also reinforces NDSU has done a great job finding raw talent and developing it in less talent rich areas.

WOW that's a lot of DB in one class. Not a lot of LB or OL or DL and not a single WR? or did I miss that?

There were a couple of late offers, one to local prospect Vuciri Hakim and the other to Jacob Kilzer. Hakim is a tall WR and Kilzer is a QB/ATH with 4.5-4.6 speed. Perhaps one of them will still choose NDSU. I would also guess that RFr Eli Green is a battlefield promotion where he is/will be put on scholarship after originally being a PWO.

I saw a Ryan Burns comment last week where he thought Kilzer would wait until the late signing period to make a decision. He has a Minnesota PWO offer, so that gives him more time to decide on his options. Kilzer could also end up as a safety, and in NDSU’s case they did have the two decommits (Devin Clark & Grant Larkin).

QB/ATH/DB Reese Sheldon - iirc he was a PWO commit originally, but as he signed yesterday I’ll guess he got that promotion to a scholly because of the two decommits at DB.

why don't we even offer 4 and 5 star kids?

at this point in our program you could show the recruit they could play Day 1 and be in the NFL in 3 years if they perform.

I'm not saying we will get these kids but we don't even offer

Do you realize how much time and effort goes into securing a verbal commitment? You don't just send them a couple letters, a text, and an offer. There's limited time and money to spend recruiting these guys so it's pointless to spend that time on someone who you know you're not going to get because you're sacrificing time that could be spent recruiting a prospect who has a reasonable chance of signing at your school. The only way recruits get 4/5 star designations is because they're offered by the biggest of the big boys in college football - NDSU ain't winning those battles... in fact they wouldn't even be in the conversation.

Snowgoose

Our best players haven’t even necessarily been three star players. Seems like quite a few that have had the highest stars haven’t necessarily made that large of an impact. What we are doing is working great for now. Unfortunately people have noticed and will continue to try and poach these kids we have offered and it is getting worse especially as the coaching tree has expanded.

Why waste time, effort and relationship building with players that will never come here?

Or spend time with our 0-3 star kids, recruit retain and develop… and they’re 4 and 5 star ability by the time we need them to play.

We develop our 4 star kids. Outside of QB, it's a waste of time and resources to offer. We will never get a 5 star QB either unless we can pay them more than our head coach makes

^^^^^THIS^^^^^

We recruit kids to fit the system not recruiting kids and then change the system to fit them. The developmental model seems to be working quite well. We could go out and chase all these big names and big egos and then end up with more issues, transfers and . Entz said it best in his presser, Kids whose brother, team mate, friend ect. have been here seen the commitment and effort it take and still choose to take that on. Those are the kids that we want and need. And the kids we target and should continue to.

IndyBison
12-22-2022, 04:50 PM
4 and 5 star kids can often go to P5 schools, play right away, and go to the NFL in 3 years. And kids aren't recruited to Alabama and Ohio State because they are 4 or 5 stars. They are 4 or 5 stars because they've been offered by Alabama or Ohio State. Sure, the Bison can offer, but they need to focus efforts on realistic targets. Recruiting is hard work. No need to waste time on unrealistic targets.

Looking to the future i hope we can get a collective that is evenly distributed. To continue on 5 star QBs making huge money... Apparently some schools who pay their stars huge money and its dividing locker rooms. Just what we want, a QB who gets 250k and an o-line who gets 0 and is annoyed. What could go wrong?

Victor Isele at 6'2" 220 ran a 11.07 100 meter last spring. Ladies and gentlemen, The Bison are going to have a bona fide speed rusher in the future.
Hard to tell from just highlights without actual measurements, but he appears to have a long wingspan as well. Excellent short area quickness as well.
It does appear that he is going to need a lot of coaching up, a lot. I can see why the FBS was wary of him. If the lights come on in the future, this kid could be playing on Sunday's as 3-4 OLB.
He also went to State in the shot put and threw over 50.

You’ve been schooled on that several times by several people.
Not all recruiting sites travel all of NDSU’s recruiting footprint.
Badger fans regularly complain about that and their players rankings.

Here are a couple examples of players getting downgraded for committing to the Bison and shutting down their recruiting, not reporting new interests

From when they originally committed:

Odds & Ends on this year’s (so far)
recruiting class:

https://gobison.com/news/2022/12/21/ndsu-football-adds-20-high-school-standouts-on-early-signing-day.aspx

QB - If all NDSU needed was a depth QB sign, there was a pretty darn good one right in the back yard - Michael Rostberg of Shanley HS, who signed with FCS St Thomas. But the coaches must have both seen something and connected with New York product Trey Drake. Will be interesting to see his progression.

RB - After last year not having a scholly RB, this was a big priority for the Bison. CharMar (Marty) Brown from Creighton Prep - a school that has been good to NDSU - was the choice. I’ve been watching to see if another RB, a change of pace type, gets added. Perhaps as a PWO. So far no sign of such a scat back, but there is a PWO offer out to a metro KC RB, DJ Jones. He, however, might be waiting on a possible KState PWO. A wildcard scatback could be John Gores, Shanley PWO listed as a WR on the current roster.

TE - One possible TE in class, 6’ 4” 210 Collin Knorr, a TE/LB athlete.
I’ll guess that means the coaches like last year’s recruits - true freshman Kelby Azure, Nate Forystek & Kaden Zenzen. Plus RFr TE’s Finn Diggins & Carson Williams.

WR - None yet, but late offers were put out to big WR Vuciri Hakim (Shanley) plus QB/ATH Jacob Kilzer. Transfer Portal possibility??? I don’t guess they would, but who knows if both recruits are missed on. Highly rated class last year with Mehki Collins, Carson Hegerle. Plus PWO’s John Gores & Cedric Wall.

OL - 4 OL signed, 2 IOL plus 2 who could be OT prototypes.
I am getting a bit concerned about the OL recruits seeming a little small by Ram standards. And not just this year. The majority of OL who have started since the Bison FCS dynasty began were 6’ 5”, or even taller.
Three Star Beau Johnson looks like a TE coming in at 6’ 5” 241……but I said the same thing about Mason Miller when he was signed from Ada-Borup……

DL - 3 DE’s, plus one DT signed. Keenan Wilson could be, size-wise as a DT at 6’ 1” 284, the next Javier Derritt. Am hoping for a Greg Menard/Kyle Emanuel type from Victor Isele (6’ 2” 221) and Abraham Myers (6’ 2” 222). Finding rush DE’s is not easy……
DE Brennan Palmer is the one DL recruit with height at 6’ 4” 237. He also looks like a TE coming in, but Coach Entz mentioned Palmer could outgrow the DE spot and move inside. DL seems like another position that has gotten a little smaller for the Bison - good to see at least one recruit each year 6’ 4” or above. Last year had Kelton McCaslin plus PWO Josh Magin, plus Logan Larson (6’ 3” 262) and Toby Anene (6’ 3” 250) are solidly built already. DE McCaslin was mentioned as someone who was close to playing, without redshirting. The same was said of Larson at DT early in the season.

LB - 4, possibly 5 LB’s signed. If Collin Knorr ends up a LB, at 6’ 4” would be the tallest Bison LB since, well, Cole Wisniewski. Otherwise the new LB’s are all the smaller, quick type. I’m going to guess that means good things about young LB’s Nathaniel Staehling (6’ 2” 227) & Austin Altepeter (6’ 2” 218) - both are true freshmen and were highly regarded as recruits. Plus Cole Wisniewski could have 2 more years left if he/the coaches want…..:)
Coach Entz thinks he got a steal out of Wisconsin in LB/ATH Jaiden Pickett.

DB - A strength of the class, 5 were signed. Jailen Duffie is perhaps the highest rated of all the recruits. Three star, #39 ranked prospect in Illinois - would be the 8th highest ranked prospect ever for NDSU in current recruiting sites # if the number holds. At 5’ 11” 165, Duffie makes me think of Tre Dempsey coming out of high school. Jaylin Crumby may not have stars (yet), but had a really solid offer list. Reese Sheldon gives the Bison a QB/DB high school background that lets you dream on Jimmy Football (James Hendricks).

Since coaches put out late offers to two bigger rush DE’s, plus a 290 lb IOL with starting experience, the WR & QB ATH - this gives us an idea of what might be on the To Do List for recruiting. I agree with others on getting a big DT also, if possible. I’d enjoy seeing another 6’ 5” + OL as well, but that is just me being greedy.

if we popped on 1 major recruit or decommits stayed it'd be a B+ I give it a C- because that is reality. The recruiting classes by current NDSU coaches are beginning to slip.

Based on???
Care to embellish about this “reality”?

Recruiting rankings aren’t the be all end all, certainly.
But, since they started covering NDSU, things are going well in that regard.
Next year’s roster, as it sits today, will include 12 of the Top 25 ranked prospects since 247 started doing this.
That includes the Top 6.
Carson Hegerle (RFr)
Cam Miller (SR)
Jacquise Alexander (RFr)
Mehki Collins (RFr)
Luke Weerts (SR)
Joe Stoffel (SR)

And, with Super Seniors, the 3 Bison seniors could all return the 2024 season

The good thing is nobody cares. You complain every year, week and day about NDSU recruiting… and here we are in another title game.

Merry Christmas.

why don't we even offer 4 and 5 star kids?

at this point in our program you could show the recruit they could play Day 1 and be in the NFL in 3 years if they perform.

I'm not saying we will get these kids but we don't even offer

……..

Ah, good times, we’ll never see posts like these again……

Hey we are usually around 128 or 130!!! on the composite side we have a good collection of 2 stars and the 2 3 stars so that's the good news.

You are understanding Composite by now, riiight???
You’ve been schooled on that several times by several people.
Not all recruiting sites travel all of NDSU’s recruiting footprint.
Badger fans regularly complain about that and their players rankings.

Here are a couple examples of players getting downgraded for committing to the Bison and shutting down their recruiting, not reporting new interests

From when they originally committed:

Jaiden Pickett ranked a 3 star, rated #8 as a prospect in Wisconsin.
He could be that larger OLB in this class, or other spots as well.

You can't grade a recruiting class before they even take the field. It's the same with the NFL draft where you never know how teams really did until a year or two later.
