Roster came out quite early this year. Metz and Midkiff are listed. No Austin Brenner though. Leaves Riley Habisch as the projected starter at 174.

2022/2023 Projected Freshman
125 - Mendez, Silvis
133 - Barrett, Bentz
141 - Howes, Peterson
149 - Drexler
157 - Thilmony
165 - Greenley, Johnson, Tulenchik
174-184-197-HWT No incoming freshman

Last season there were a number of commits that ended up not attending NDSU. Be interesting to see if all of these guys show up and if any are added. Top four weights currently have nobody coming in. Lack of quality depth could be an issue there.

Are you talking about this year’s freshmen? I’m pretty sure Greenley is a senior in high school this upcoming year.

Wrestlestat has Boeden Greenley listed as an incoming RS Freshman at 165.

Gotcha. In this case wrestlestat is wrong. He’ll be 23-24. Helps to spread things out 165 though. I think (hope) Caliendo has that locked up for a few years.

Caliendo should be a four year starter. That being said he looks like he has the frame to move up a weight in the future.

Lack of depth in the top weights is a concern. For this season 125 and 133 are going to be interesting how they turn out. If habisch and Sax take a step this should be a fun season at least in duals.

I'm still surprised Metz is back. He's also in the early InterMat rankings.

What happened to Brenner? I think he was going to be a top 20 174 this year. If he is indeed gone, I think 174 could be our weakest weight.

Also, go look at the Intermat rankings. 141 is one of the shallowest weights I've ever seen and think Dylan a legit AA contender in it. It appears Carr is going to bump up to 165 too, which makes Franek an instant National Championship contender.

I know Brenner graduated so maybe he just had enough. I dont think habisch is that much of a drop off though. I see him getting a top 8 seed for the big 12s.

I have to believe that graduating and being injured probably caused Brenner to hang it up. Although Habisch isn’t much of a drop off it’s still a drop off

You guys are probably right about just hanging it up after graduation and injury. That being said, I don't think Habisch is close to a top 20 guy without a major jump, and Brenner was already there. I guess I think there is a much more substantial dropoff than you guys do.

Their head to head results were close, but that could just be (likely is) a byproduct of familiarity. Against outside competition, Brenner displayed high quality ability, especially from neutral, while notching several quality wins, that Habisch has never shown.
