Current 2022 Recruits
Max Peterson Byron, MN #5 overall Recruit in MN (Guillotine Wrestling), Flo #18@138
Gavin Drexler Stratford, WI Multiple X Wisconsin D3 champ. Wrestled 145 this past summer

-Looks like both will project to wrestle 141/149 in college
-with 2021 being a larger class I’m assuming 2022 wont be very big

According to the announcers at the MN Who’s #1 the Bison are recruiting

2022 Landon Johnson Owatonna, MN #8 Overall recruit in MN/Flo #15@160
2023 Koy Buesgens New Prague, MN #5 Overall recruit in MN/Beat Max Peterson @ 2021 Who's #1

Anyone have any in-sight into who else the Bison may be looking at? What recruits were at the last home Bison football game?

#10 Max Peterson

160 lbs
#2 Landon Johnson

Some NDSU targets: Koy Buesgens may have wrestled his way out of NDSU's reach, by taking runner up at Super 32. I just hope he doesn't wind up at SDSU. Zach Hanson didn't place, which probably helps NDSU a bit. Zach Silvis only went 1-2. Finn Nadeu out of Montana didn't place either.

Verbals Peterson and Drexler didn't place but racked up nice wins. Peterson was unseeded at 145 and did alright.

Verbal Landon Johnson wound up as the 4 seed and won 3 close matches, before losing and not placing.

Not super encouraging but also not all that discouraging.

Zach Hanson is announcing his college choice in an hour on Flo. I would guess Wyoming, SDSU, or Princeton, but NDSU has been interested. He was a cadet/16U Fargo and Greco champ.

Koy Buesgens plans on announcing on Tuesday. He's a very fast rising recruit after taking runner up at Super 32 and beating some really big time recruits. I don't think he picks NDSU, but one can hope.

With the last two classes, the potential long term lineup fits could be something like:
125- Negrete
133-
141- Drexler
149- Peterson
157-
165- Caliendo
174- Johnson
184- Parker
197- Mooberry
HWT- Mora

That's pretty good IMO and with March being in his 2nd year, 133 should be filled. Peterson and Drexler could both be up a weight class too.

One note about 2021 verbal and top 100 recruit Alex Ramirez, he is at Clackamas Community College.

One is another California kid in Sean Solis (class of 22), who is probably a 141/149.

California didn't have a state tourney last year, but he was a DNP in 2020. He was the #12 seed and went 2-2.

He is not a top 100 recruit

PaBizon
12-07-2021, 07:13 PM
Fernando Barreto of Walnut, CA has committed to the BiZon. Flo currently has him ranked #12 at 126 pounds and #85 overall in the class of 2022. Projects at 133 in college. He was a high school teammate of 2021 BiZon recruit Alex Ramirez who ended up wrestling Junior College this season.

PaBizon
12-07-2021, 08:13 PM
Barreto took 6th place in the California state Tournament at 106 as a freshman, 6th at 120 as a sophomore and 2nd last year at 128 (non sanctioned California state Tournament). He is currently ranked second at 126 in the California state rankings. He recently won a tournament up at 145 pounds majoring the 6th ranked California kid in the finals.

Bison recruit Maxwell Petersen defeated Stanford recruit Zach Hanson 7-3 in the 145 pound title at the Minnesota Xmas Tournament. Two solid takedowns and a 2pt near fall. He’s a strong kid.

Brendan Howes lost to Hanson in the semis and ended up taking 4th at 145.

Zach Silvis lost 5-4 in the 120 pound title match to a very strong Alan Koehler who’s a 2023 Nebraska Recruit

Landen Johnson is in the finals at 160. Edit: Johnson beats Anthony Tuttle of Stillwater 5-2. If you enjoy watching a scrambler wrestle you’ll like watching this guy.

Good showings for some future BiZon.

Any insight on the board re: Brock Fettig? Rumblings on the SDSU board that he may be the most recent verbal to SDSU. He looks to be having a great senior year with some good wins and a very good loss 1-0 against highly ranked gopher recruit Lyden.

Lisbon has a stud but I belive he's a junior. Carrington also had a mean pinning machine not sure what grade he was.

And then sorry for imposing on the wrestling forum but not sure where else to talk nd state wrestling tourney but the refs missed a hell of a headgear grab in the 195lb championship match. Shitty way to lose that match. Got turned to his back because the kid twisted his headgear. Both refs were on the wrong side and couldn't see.

Commentators during the state wrestling tournament did mention Fettig was going to SDSU. Wrestled 182 this past season but was really 170#. Probably projects at 165 in college. Long kid with good frame. Guessing he’s a guy who might take a few years to crack a starting lineup, but you never know what might happen when he gets to college.

IMO jr Koye Grebel of Valley City is a kid to keep an eye on. He just won the 120 pound title. His only loss of the season was a 3-2 decision to Nebraska signee Alan Koehler in the championship match at Rumble in the Red. He also has a younger brother that just won a state title as a freshman.

Solis and Barreto are in the same 132 pound bracket at the California state tournament. Both made the blood round and needed one more win to place.

Barreto was the 4 seed and lost in the quarters to the really good Brock Bobzien. He injury defaulted out and didn't place.

Solis is the 14 seed and lost a close one to the 3 seed. He'll then lost to the 9 seed

Coach Kish and Coach Blanc are both out in California watching the action and trying to keep the California pipeline going.

Big Bird
02-26-2022, 10:01 PM
I went back and watched their losses and I'm excited. Solis lead almost start to finish vs the 3 seed, but gassed bad. That's fixable. Really smooth, well timed attacks for the most part and he was ok on top and bottom.

I watched 2 of Barreto's matches and like most of what I saw. He's more solidly built than Solis, and has really good movement and explosiveness. He got jacked up and pinned in the quarters, which happens. I can't imagine upper body stuff is where he ever wants to go. The one concerning part is it was not a hard or violent throw, he came up fine, walked off fine, but injury defaulted out of the wrestlebacks.

NDSU has added at least 3 guys in recent weeks. They also added Macray Klohs from Buffalo MN a bit earlier.

Connor Tulechik from Pequot Lakes, Trae Thilmony from Montana, and Eddie Simes from Wisconsin.

Tulechik is a 2 time state runner up and won a title this year and probably projects as a 174.

Thilmony was a 3 time state champ and projects as a 149.

Simes was likely the Wisconsin kid Portlandbison referenced. He's from Amery Wisconsin and was a state runner up at 170 this year, while taking 2nd at Va Beach nationals, and 5th at the Cheesehead. He previously wrestled for Dassell Cokato in MN and was a state runner up there too.

Klohs committed a few months ago and took 5th in state and projects at 197.

So because Fargo hosts a usa wrestling tournament NDSU should be a top 10 program? 15?

I've heard kish say they have had to explain to recruits that Fargo is where NDSU is located. There's a disconnect between the tourney in the dome and NDSU. I've also heard Kish say he's had meetings with administration to get admissions and other people from NDSU to the tournament to help make the Fargo/NDSU connection. You also have to factor in not all of the kids in the tournament enjoy their time in Fargo. I read that Pentz didn't like his experience in Fargo because of the flatness and the heat and humidity. As much as we love the area North Dakota isn't for everybody.

I would love to see NDSU be a top 20 program, but with NIL money and the way college sports are changing I don't think it's a reasonable expectation.

On the recruiting front, Koy Hopke is a top 5/10 recruit in the 2024 class and Flo has this note from him while discussing his recruiting:

While Koy admitted there are a few programs he feels more comfortable with than others right now, he’s keeping his options open to every school moving forward and will take his time in the process. The schools he’s most comfortable with right now: Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota State, Indiana, Michigan, and Penn State. Despite listing those schools, Hopke reiterated he’ll take all of his official visits and won’t be committing any time soon.

His brother will be pitching for the Bison next season too.

You are correct. I'd welcome the addition, but I'm hoping Negrete is our guy for the next 4 years.

Also, appears coach Marsden had an in home visit with Dillan Johnson, a 2024 HWT out of Illinois. He's had visits from Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin too and took a football visit to MN. Looks like a big time HWT is a target for NDSU in 2024 with Johnson and Koy Hopke both being targets. Hopke is the overall #4 guy in the class and Johnson is #29, so either would be a very high profile and significant get for the staff.

Appears he has FB offers from Ball State, Illinois State, and EMU and visited MN. He's related to former Missouri State DT, and Colts 2022 draft pick Eric Johnson.

I agree that Negrete is probably the man going forward. Would be a good depth move though. I saw the picture of Mardsen next to Johnson. Johnson is one big dude for his age. Would be a wonderful pick up.

Dominick Serrano (133) and Nathan Haas (184) of Nebraska have both entered the transfer portal. Both were highly recruited out of high school and have struggled a bit. Interested to see if the BiZon would take a look at either (especially Haas) There are no HWTS in the portal to add to the room even as a depth play. Mora better stay healthy.

With ND state tournament underway its no surprise future Bison Boeden Greenley (Lisbon) is in the finals and on cruise control. Browsing the brackets a few other names to keep an eye on for potential recruits are Koye Grebel (Valley City) at 138. He is a senior multiple time state champion. Not sure if he has college plans yet. A couple Juniors in LJ Araujo (Bismarck) at 160 and Coy Okeson (Minot Ryan) at 285. I have mentioned LJ before and I think its a long shot for NDSU as I feel he will look to go B1G. Okeson is a possible target though. He won the Rumble on the Red and looks good in the short time you see him wrestle. He faces AJ Heins (New Salem and future Bison football player) tonight in the finals. And then looking farther down the road sophmore Ben Deforest (Bismarck) at 120 as well as freshman Waylon Cressel (West Fargo) at 170 and Nic Enzminger (Bismarck Legacy) at 106 are a few to keep an eye on going forward.

And 24 recruit LJ Araujo from Bismarck High took second as well. Greenley while taking third actually beat his opponent in the third place place match earlier in the tournament.

I also saw 23 recruit Koye Grebel from Valley City has now committed to Iowa.

Yea the PA kid LJ lost to was ranked 6th in the country I believe. Enzminger lost to the #7 ranked kid in the finals. Ben Deforest and Koltyn Grebel (both 25 recruits) were also out there losing out in the consi16 round I believe.

Hopefully Koye gets a shot down the road. he is a tough wrestler and good kid from all accounts. I can't imagine a year practicing with Real Woods is going to hurt him.

Izzak Olejnik the all-american Caliendo beat for 7th is in the portal. Sykora and Marsden are now following him on social media. NDSU picked up a commitment from Buffalo 184 national qualifier Giuseppe Hoose.

He beat DJ 12-8 during the year. Hopefully this just means that they plan to redshirt DJ this year, and DJ is ok with that. If that is the case, this is a great addition

With Hoose being a senior this probably makes more sense than bringing in a younger guy like Rogotzke. DJ redshirts to get ready to make an AA run his last two years. Here’s to hoping that’s how it goes.

Combo of 2023 and 2024 recruits competing in Junior nationals in Fargo.

In the round of 32 (most with 3 wins so far): Michael Olson (Minnesota, 126), Carter Schmidt (Montana, 132), Boeden Greenley (North Dakota, 160), Tyler Secoy (Georgia, 170)

Consolations: Zane Licht (Wisconsin, 152)

I probably missed a few, but those were the ones I saw in the brackets.

A couple others of note: Former 2024 commit Koufax Christianson lost early and is in the consolation bracket, LJ Araujo in the rd of 32, Koye Grebel (Iowa commit) in the rd of 32, and Alex Braun (From Woodbury and brother of former Bison Austin Braun) in the rd of 32

Licht and Greenley both didn't get within 2 matches of AAing...big woof.

Greenley looked slower and his defense was markedly worse. He needs to develop something other than his swing single. Very disappointing performance IMO.

Licht hasn't had a great year. He has spurts where he looks really good, but he is a guy that has been consistently falling in the rankings over the last year, and likely will again if anyone updates their 2023 rankings.
