ba bye KVLY wow, this is a shocker if I do say so myself.

ba bye MIDCO! (ndsu mens/womens basketball on WDAY XTRA) which isn't great, but it's free broadcast tv.

I'm not totally surprised since WDAY/The Forum already fly reporters to away games for pregame/postgame shows and are probably looking for ways to keep their brand going with the struggles newspapers and even local TV news have been experiencing.

So apparently WDAY took out the clause from their last RFP that said if the football team won less than 8 games in a season they wouldn't have to pay NDSU as much for TV rights???

I find it interesting that the announcement says they will broadcast 8 to 11 football games per year. I get that usually one game is the MVFC game of the week and exclusive to ESPN3, but what about the other two? Does it give them an out to not broadcast two road games a year? If so, that sucks!

Start the thread!!! Haha!! It will be interesting. Says they will broadcast 8-11 games. So are they saying they will not broadcast every game? I know there is a valley game of the week that kvly never got. Also, there is going to be a lot of pissed off college football fans that aren’t bison fans when they tune in to watch an Ohio State/Wisconsin game and get a Bison game. Right now, KVLY only had to deal with pre-empting Notre Dame football every other week.

maybe Leerfield can get a game or 2 on FSNorth? Bally Sports or whatever. or push for ESPN 2 or ESPN U for a few games?

I'd love to read more but the damn forum firewall. (texted my fam to get a loggin info) Can someone run down the details? They better be on the regular channels and not an extra channel or this is a huge step back.

BTW, saw the number of games comment.....remember, when NDSU on the road, there will typically be a production by the home team; this is not an issue until proven otherwise.

Edit found this:

https://gobison.com/news/2021/5/13/general-ndsu-athletics-announces-multi-year-television-agreement-with-forum-communications.aspx

Good, football on regular TV. I'm sure having good OTA access for football was an NDSU deal stopper.

No more LT! No more LT! No more LT! Sadly, I'd bet this is bad for Brian Shawn.......I'd think Dom will do the games unless he doesn't want to. Hope they get a real color guy.

The most important excerpt in my estimation:

The relationship calls for an annual broadcast of eight to 11 football games, approximately 40 men’s and women’s basketball games, seasonal coaches’ shows for football and men’s and women’s basketball as well as the airing of 15 Olympic sports. Additionally, Forum Communications will carry the NDSU spring football game, postseason TV specials for football and men’s and women’s basketball, and NCAA National Signing Day for football in December.

The majority of basketball and Olympic sports (volleyball, track and field, cross country, golf, soccer, wrestling, baseball and softball) will air statewide on WDAY Xtra.

“This type of engagement is unprecedented,” said Josh Rohrer, vice president of broadcast for Forum Communications. “The WDAY and Forum Communications team are thrilled to be the exclusive TV partner in this new chapter of NDSU athletics broadcasting. The partnership of two of the most storied brands in our region is an exciting prospect. It is our commitment to bring Bison fans the very best in broadcast, digital and written content in the region. Not only will we continue providing the very best in NDSU athletics coverage, we anticipate growing the broadcast experience to levels well beyond today’s expectations.”
Since they only call out basketball and Olympic sports for WDAY Xtra I'm assuming that means all football games are on WDAY. No mention of streaming platforms in the article but I can only hope it'll be ESPN3/ESPN+ since WDAY is an ABC affiliate.

I can guarantee they are finding a way to tie this into their online subscription model. It may not be the first year of the contract but they will find a way to tie anything that doesn't explicitly have to be over the air and can be streamed to their new online sub accounts.

I'd be shocked for NDSU is not on ESPN3/+ for football. They seem happy with the nationwide distribution and the eyeballs drop would be huge if they went away from that. Zero percent chance that happens.

It will be interesting, TAB. As all know, the standard college times are 11, 2:30, and 7ish. ABC would have games during anyone of those times. My guess would be they would stick with 2:30 as they would not want to go against the big prime time ABC games and NDSU would not want 11.

Here's an interesting tidbit......

It is an odd combination having bison1660 on the radio and WDAY on TV since they also have radio. KVLY and bison1660 regularly cooperated on coverage (play by play or analysist appearing on the other). Does this go away? Example, if Dom become play by play, after he finishes his radio show, does he ever do spots with Jeff on 1660? I'd bet no.....but that is unfortunate. I liked when Brian Shawn would come on.

This is great news. Chance of watching a game on Midco for me is basically zero. I'll have to figure out how to stream WDAY Extra but at least it's possible. The bigger games for BB can be moved to regular WDAY. As far as football goes, the KVLY production was really mediocre. Not as bad as we made it out to be but NDSU deserved better. WDAY-AM (WDAYradionow.com) is Flag Family Media (WZFG The Flag AM 1100).

WDAY-TV (ForumComm owned) is television only now.

Bison 1660 is Radio FM Group owned.

I would think a relationship would still be there. I mean, they had Brian Shawn on not hiding the fact he was the tv play by play on kvly when people watching the game on tv is in direct competition to listening to the radio. As far as who would do play by play, I would think they would offer it to Izzo as he is their main play by play guy for all the high school championships they have aired the past 7 years or so. If not, Brian Shawn would be the obvious 2nd choice; and actually, those two together would be a solid combo. Throw in Kyle Emanuel on the sidelines and that is a pretty good team. I would think they would have a pregame show like kvly did. And having the coaches shows on the extra I would assume and having them easier to stream will be good. Just keep McFeely quarantined with Timmerman far far away!!

They mentioned in the video that the Summit League has a streaming rights contract for basketball (and the MVFC has one for football also) so they won't be streaming WDAY broadcasts for football or basketball on inforum.com. I know the MVFC's streaming rights are to ESPN3/+ but who is the Summit League's streaming partner? If I had to guess I'd say Midco so is it possible those out-of-market for WDAY/WDAY Xtra are still going to have to pony up for Midco's streaming package to get NDSU basketball games?

Thanks for the link... the video answered the streaming question --- Bison Media Group (managed by Learfield IMG College) owns the streaming rights to all NDSU Sporting events -- they said it will follow the conference agreements for streaming, so I think its safe to say that everything will still be on ESPN+, I think there will be a lot more basketball games next year than there were this year up there... curious if they will also stream so of the olympic sports too.

In the video, they alluded to stepping up the technology used to cover the games... curious of they might be installing a skycam or cable cam? That would really step-up the FB coverage, bringing them almost to ESPN prime time CFB games.

Yeah, I didn't understand the rhyme or reason to it at all last year. It seemed like every USD game was on ESPN3 but NDSU games were hit or miss on there especially home games.

They were a bit better. I sit in the endzone so it's hard for me to see if they're crooked but for the first home game against YSU I walked around to the west sideline at about the 20 yard line and you could tell they were still a little crooked but more like they were painted by an 8 eight beer drunk instead of a 24 beer drunk like they were towards the end of the 2019 season.

In the video, they alluded to stepping up the technology used to cover the games... curious of they might be installing a skycam or cable cam? That would really step-up the FB coverage, bringing them almost to ESPN prime time CFB games.

If KVLY had that they'd have slammed it into the back of the QB's head.

Got it. I guess my point is simply that if you think FCC isn't going to find a way to make this about padding their online subscriptions you're kidding yourself. Like I said in my earlier post, be prepared to watch some NDSU basketball games on inforum.com if you don't get WDAY Xtra where you live.

I spent over a year of my time in that company on the committee to bring online subscriptions to life. Don't shoot me, it was happening whether I was part of it or not.

Also, glad I am not there anymore.

Ok, so what? I think I already have an inforum.com subscription and can't remember what it cost except that it was almost free.

Yep it was stated by WDAY/FCC that the streaming of Basketball and Football are under separate contracts and they aren't part of those.

I'm curious when those contracts are up and what the conferences are going to do moving forward. Maybe NDSU with Learfield can get something better??? Probably a big maybe.

I wonder if the new tech they are talking about is the ability to super impose things on the field like first down lines, field goal range target lines and other info.

Maybe it's starting lineups with the player's picture and correct name? Maybe a play clock? Maybe showing 2 point conversion attempts and long TD passes? Holy cow, I'm excited!

Your assuming he took that into consideration, along with his 6’ 6” TE’s against .... no one within 5 yards on 3 & 3.

But, yeah, I get your point.

That said, from what I understand (based upon some info. that I guess could be considered a bit “inside”) the O play calling and scheme is on the Entz/athletic department radar. What we saw this Spring is not what is expected next Fall. We’ll see ...

According to this site, there is no ABC station on the airwaves in Dickinson.
https://nocable.org/availability-report/zip/58601-dickinson-nd/

That is correct. The only time Dickinson and Williston ever had OTA ABC was when Forum let others run KBMY/KMCY for them. For a while in the first decade of the 2000s, the owners of the Bismarck Fox stations ran them and had low power ABC translators in Dickinson and Williston. Then, they switched to Reiten, (who owned the CBS stations in western ND) and ABC was on subchannels of the Dickinson/Williston CBS stations. This lasted from around the digital conversion in 2009 until Reitan sold the CBS stations to Nexstar (2015). Then those towns lost ABC. Forum seems to think having their stations on cable/sattelite in Dickinson/Williston is good enough unless others can pay for it.

The SEC has a rule that if 85% of the team is vaccinated, they won't do tests. Seems like the right move to me

But if they are below 85% vaccinated and someone tests positive, the game is forfeited and it counts as a loss. Seems fair to me. Gotta have policy that drives smart decisions and this does it

Reliable is a relative term. If 1% of tests are a false positive in asymptomatic people, you're averaging about 1 person per football team with a false positive. That's a problem, especially if tests are being taken just hours before games or boarding airplanes. https://www.cochranelibrary.com/cdsr/doi/10.1002/14651858.CD013705.pub2/full

What bugs me is that they say they wont test if a certain percentage of the team is vaccinated, but people who are vaccinated can still get covid, right? And I believe the effectiveness of the vaccine is greatly reduced after a number of months, right? This, to me, will just give people a false sense of security. Is the goal to get everyone vaccinated or is the goal to prevent the spread of covid? If it's about preventing the spread of covid, then they should still be testing teams who are mostly vaccinated if they want to test asymptomatic players to begin with. The rule just seems entirely arbitrary.. why not just test unvaccinated players then? It's not like a team isn't partying and spending weekends with unvaccinated classmates as it is, whether a team is more than 85 percent vaccinated or not.

That's why they should only test if below the 85% rule like the SEC. It puts the accountability on the players and the administration

But I don't buy 1%. Otherwise every game would have had 1 false positive. Statistically there are too many players on a 2 team roster. We'll over 100 players

That's why they should only test if below the 85% rule like the SEC. It puts the accountability on the players and the administration

Why test at all? The people that care have already been vaccinated. If somebody gets sick sit them out just like any other illness.

I mean, I posted a link to the science. The accuracy, or lack there of, of rapid testing is why antigen tests weren't initially accepted by the NCAA last fall. Most football teams weren't using rapid antigen tests, so that could probably be your answer.

There were problems with non antigen tests as well, though.

From last August: The NFL had 77 positive COVID-19 tests from 11 teams re-examined by a New Jersey lab after false positives, and all those tests came back negative.

Edit. You said RAPID testing sorry I thought you meant all tests. My bad. I agree with you

The rapid test takes 10 minutes. If you blow a positive take 2 more you have an answer in 30 minutes.

Would that be following CDC guidance? Could have sworn a lab test is required to confirm. Serious question. Because taking two more tests would actually make sense. This strategy being logical is another reason that the NCAA not initially allowing these tests last fall pissed me off.

This is the million $$$ question no one seems to want to answer. Most authorities are saying this will be endemic like the flu. Time to start acting like it.
