By that I mean the largest deficit overcome to win?

Cal poly or Sam Houston state round one. Money's always on Steve Walker

Cal Poly 2007 in San Luis Obispo

Cal Poly scores a TD on an interception with 10:02 left in the game. They go up 28-9.
Steve Walker throws a 67 yard TD with 9:36 left in the game. 16-28
Tyler Roehl scores on a 4 yard run with 4:21 left in the game. 23-28
Steve Walker throws the famous "are you kidding me?" pass to Kole Heckendorf for an 80 yard TD with 38 seconds left. A two point conversion makes it 31-28

Was it Cal poly or was it UC Davis?

Just wanted to be the first. My bad. Hard to remember who they played when you watched it on the radio.

Down 19 with 10 minutes left or down 24 with 30 minutes?

Cal Poly.

Montana in 2002

Montana in 2002

Yeah. At #3 Montana in front of a record crowd down 24-2 at the half. Montana was coming off of an 11-win season while NDSU was coming off a 2-win season.

The win had a great impact on turning the program around. NDSU got two huge in-state recruits the next week and NDSU just picked up steam from there.

But it was 2003 not 2002.

Side note: Man, I am glad that NDSU blew past the "get a signature win" stage right away - that talk was weak.

Sounds like a winner to me, even if it's not the greatest absolute magnitude comeback.

I didn't know they were ranked 3.

I had forgotten too and had to look it up: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_NCAA_Division_I-AA_football_rankings

Hey, NDSU beat Montana when they were ranked #3 back in 2014 too.

Haha, wow, yes 2003. What an old man brain moment for me.

That was a big win when we were D2

That win was so enormous for the football program and the school.

Gene Taylor once told me that win galvanized everyone who was on the fence or against the move to DI within NDSU's ranks and ushered in a level of support that has been the catalyst for all of our success in DI.

Winning championship after losing to USD and Wentz with a broken wrist. That weekend was a gut punch. To comeback, go undefeated afterward and win the championship... Biggest comeback season.

Yeah, it was a great comeback game but it was also the start of a great comeback by the program. Pretty sure it was Roehl and Wurzbacher who committed that week.

Iowa State game in '14 wasn't a nail biting comeback, but for NDSU to put up 34 unanswered after being down 14 (after 16:00 of clock).......against a Big 12 school,.......with a new QB,.......after getting beaten fairly soundly in their previous meeting,.......in front of 52,000 on the road.......

New HC as well.

For me it's SHSU in the Dome. However, it absolutely sucks that it's the 3rd week of August and this is the best thing we have to talk about. Carry on :(

Those mentioned are all fantastic comebacks and I loved everyone one of them. Another two ridiculous comebacks were Iowa and Kstate. The kstate one I thought for sure we were going to lose in that second half after they scored the TD and with Iowa I thought shoot our victory streak against FBS is probably going to end but both times the players just willed themselves to victories.

That California Davis game was pretty miraculous. It’s seemed like every play in the 4th quarter was a 4th & 10 conversion. Many times that game could have been an L.

That was the start of the DI hard edge Calusses that have carried this program to 2020.

Agreed, that one was the modern start of believing imho. Which of course carried over to cal poly the following year.

Ah! I have another one.

The greatest comeback ever in the history of comebacks was what NDSU did after "Gotta Earn It" kept spouting off.

I, assuming Roadwarrior as well, attended both the UCDavis and Cal Poly comeback games. Both did a complete 180, from certain defeat to thrilling victory. We (Bison crowd) all went absolutely ballistic when Heckendorf caught the bomb.

He was a UNI troll who hung popped in here occasionally from 2008-2009 mostly to say(repeatedly) that NDSU's DII days meant nothing and that we hadn't proved squat in FCS yet. Strangely, he disappeared in late 2009 and never came back.

Never forget all those folks piling for the exits only to hear the BOOM from the parking lot on another Heckendorf TD. I can only imagine their drive home was a bit quiet.

Oh the good old days of bragging about conference championships! I hear they’ve added a few more since those days.

LOL that's awesome.
