View Full Version : Oklahoma Dual - 24 Jan

After weather washed out last weeks dual against Iowa State, the guys return to the mat vs Oklahoma tonight. It should be a good team matchup with several interesting individual matchups. It feels like NDSU needs a win here after the dud vs Wyoming. Hopefully Fogarty and Midkiff are back in the lineup too, otherwise things don't look promising. WrestleStat has this one as a 19-14 win for the Sooners, and they disagree with me on the winners at 125, 157, and 184.

Predictions:
125- Midkiff dec Moody, 3-0 NDSU. Moody isn't having a good year, but he has wrestled a really tough schedule and lost several close matches to good guys. He is a fifth year senior, 4 year starter, and 3 time NCAA qualifier.
133- Sykora dec Madrigal, 6-0 NDSU. Cam lost to a sub .500 Madrigal last year and that was one of the matches that keyed Oklahoma's narrow win. Madrigal has been better this year, but Cam should win here.
141- Demas fall Degen, 6-6. Demas is one of the most dangerous guys in the country and a legitimate NCAA title contender. He is explosive and extremely comfortable with upper body stuff and all forms of ties. That is a recipe for disaster for Degen.
149- Butler dec Van Maanen, 9-6 OU. Winnable match for JVM, but his track record in close matches is awful this year.
157- Franek dec Thomas, 9-9. Thomas had a comeback win against Luke Weber last year to seal the dual and is tough. He was one win away from becoming an All American last year and has put together another solid year. I think this is Franek's breakthrough.
165- Fogarty fall Dover, 15-9 NDSU. Dover is a true freshman who has wrestled some tough guys close, but he started the year at 149. I have a very hard time believing he can match Fogarty's physicality.
174- Mantanona dec De La Riva, 15-12 NDSU. De La Riva beat him twice last year, but I think he loses tonight. Hope I'm wrong.
184- Roberts dec Roberts, 15-15. I don't think I've seen Roberts wrestle, but he has better results than Cressell this year. Maybe this is winnable.
197- Woodley dec Eaton, 18-15 OU. Woodley is just better than Eaton and I can't see Cordell being able to match Woodley's offense.
HWT- Metz dec Jones, 18-18. Metz already beat him 3-2 once this year.

There are a lot of matches that could go either way. 125, 133, 149, 157, 174, 184, and HWT are all up for grabs. OU is a huge favorite at 141 and a sizable favorite at 197. NDSU is only a huge favorite at 165, and that's if Fogarty goes.

Yep, I think your analysis is spot on. Maybe Weber could win at 165 if Fogarty can't go, but I don't want to find out. Hopefully the guys come out with some fire tonight.

Dual starting at 141 tonight.

Good news is that leaves two really good matches to end the dual.

Bad news is OU will likely have a big lead right away. Dom Demas is an All American and has beaten Degen by tech fall twice before. Butler is a decent favorite at 149 as well.

Tyler Jones and Cam are dressed at 133...

Hopefully Cam goes, but that isn't promising

Great job by Droegemueller there to only lose by 6.

Had a couple nice shots that he probably finishes on most normal guys

De La Riva gets pinned...damn.

Just sloppy wrestling, I think he let him lock up 4 cradles before he finally finished one. Riva beat him the last two times they have wrestled.

Intermission now, but NDSU wrestling really well. First 4 matches went better than expected.

OU is back in this with that fall though. They are favored to win the next two to tie it up.

We'll likely need a Metz win and a win from either Midkiff or Sykora

Yeah, super frustrating. Lorenzo timed his opening shot perfectly and i think he caught himself off guard, because he made no attempt to finish it.

One of those wins was a kind of lucky defensive fall. This was probably overdue.

This kid is tired.

Big Bird
01-25-2020, 12:53 AM
That kid was gassed and Pottinger didn't do anything to force the issue in the third.

Not finishing that double at the end of the 2nd was the difference.

Yeah, that was a killer.

Good thing we got a fast start. No gimmes down the stretch.

Eaton loses 6-2.

Team score tied at 15 with three matches to go.

All three matches should be good and could be close. We're slight favorites at HWT and 133. Both teams are still in this.

Solid win for the program tonight. Hopefully they can continue to build off this. Looking forward to heading up to Greeley next Saturday to watch the Bison take on the Bears.

That's gonna be a tough one. There should be a lot of close matches.

Awesome, but can someone better than me explain why we seem to have so many injuries and no-goes on match nights? Just seems odd that we never seem to have a full, healthy squad?? There is big difference between pain and actual competitive injury IMO.

I think we've been pretty good. We had to leave 125 open a few times, but if you saw Midkiff at the Southern Scuffle,he was dealing with more than just pain. However, I never hear many details on these things.

In general, I don't think college coaches care too much about dual meets. The conference and NCAA tournaments are really all that matters. But, I think Kish usually puts out the best team he can.

As an individual who was constantly hurt (thankfully Scott Woken never got tired of seeing me), I really can't complain. I don't know the reason for the injuries, but many of mine (third degree AC separation, broken fibula and tearing the ACL, LCL and meniscus of my left knee) were from wrestling recklessly. Other injuries were just the regular wear and tear of the sport, and being Diabetic, healing was much more difficult.

Maybe some kind of injury prevention technology can be useful. Looking at how beneficial the system Eric Perkins has been using with the football team, maybe something similar can be used with wrestling and other sports.

Thanks for info. I enjoy NDSU wrestling because I worked out with them and developed major respect as a result. Different, but fun breed of “cats”.

Interesting. One wouldn’t normally think that NDSU wresting team doesn’t have same exposer to rehab and training that football does. Why would that be the case?

I'm not 100% sure on the subject, but I believe the system Eric Perkins is using isn't developed for a sport like wrestling....yet. Looking at the rate of injuries (especially the major ones) the past two seasons for football, it looks to be working. Here's an article Ross Uglem wrote last Summer about the technology: https://247sports.com/college/north-dakota-state/Article/NDSU-Football-STATSPorts-Athlete-monitoring-system-134590563/

I watched my second dual in my life. Flipped between that and the girls hoops game that was on Friday night.
