View Full Version : Early thoughts on 2020 season

Just wanted to see what people think going into next season. Obviously defensive line we will lose 3 of the 4 starters so will need some guys to have a good offseason and spring ball. Lots of young talent there that needs to step up. Can destin talbert fill bridges spot as a good cover corner? I think Dawson Weber player well this year when given the opportunity. Does Luke weerts get more action at lb? Offensively we should possibly be the best ever. We only lose 1 lineman and will be loaded at wr, te and rb. Plus we get Seth Wilson back who may have been the number 1 this year. Oh yea we get trey back who I expect to put up ridiculous numbers and be a much improved passer. Who are the young breakout players to watch for?

We rotate so many guys on D Line, I think we’ll be fine there.

You called it, the position I’ll be watching the most is corner (Talbert or Weber?)

Also want to see if Seth Wilson will return to form and yes, can’t wait to see what Trey Lance can do. Will he ever throw an interception?

He almost had one picked yesterday. Very glad he failed.

Interested in the d line. Ching and biegler are back inside, tucker showed some flashes this year. Interested in seeing evans/derritt/mosteart develop.

Tuszka will be damn tough to replace at end....waege and McCormick will need to step up but depth is a bit 7nproven right now.

Below is a possible depth chart for 2020. RB Braden Zuroff, FS Jackson Entz and D.J. Baptist are no longer on the roster. Getting back Zac Mathis and Seth Wilson, from injury, could be big for the offense if they can stay healthy. Braylon Henderson is coming into his own at Slot. It will be hard to replace James Hendricks and Marquis Bridges. Dawson Weber has been playing well at free safety. Destin Talbert struggled early on but improved throughout the season. Hopefully we can get one more good corner in this recruiting class.

Could nexts years offense be the best we have ever seen? Hopefully open the playbook and not have to rely on trey running so much. Who fills the right guard spot? Do they move volson inside and have sundel play rt? I am really excited to see braylon in the slot. Seemed to make some good plays against Montana state and threw some great blocks. I hope talbert can be a lock down cb to open up the blitz package.

Offense should be awesome. How much better than this year depends on how much Lance improves making reads, seeing the field and passing. Real question mark is defense. We just lost 3 of our top 4 players and I don’t see any all Americans on the D line. If some new guys don’t really step up Oregon will drop 40 on us. I believe some dudes will step it up though. We will find a good replacement for Hendricks, and opp Hayes I wouldn’t be surprised if a youngster takes that spot. I’m not on board with living off transfers but if we could find a good d-line transfer...

If we beat Oregon, we will be number 25 in the AP Poll. Guarantee it.
If Oregon is ranked top 5 pre-season, I think we end up getting more than enough token votes to actually fall higher (i.e. lower number) than 25. Even if they're top 10 to start the season, I think this is a possibility.

What would be a little crazy is if Oregon then goes on to defeat tOSU the next week. And both Oregon and tOSU finish the regular season without any other losses. And then we continue the year undefeated, blowing out the competition through another championship. We'd be crazy high in the computers, and I'd have to think we keep getting AP votes to stay in the top 25. Maybe even some real Heisman buzz for Lance.

Oh... that also means we'd have the longest D-I winning streak in history, surpassing Oklahoma. We'd also have roughly a top-3 active win streak against FBS foes.

Okay... some of this might be a little far-fetched. (Or is it???)

If we beat Oregon it will be that they are super overrated
Then if they somehow beat OSU they would say "Well if we had play against you like we did OSU, we'd kill you." Same song and dance.

Terrell Hall will be a redshirt freshman. From the things I heard about him from Coach K this year he may have an opportunity to start at CB.

Also love the idea of getting Kaczor on the field more next year. Do you make him a safety, or an outside backer? However, he is a hybrid type guy that plays a ton of nickel, sure is a nice player to utilize like that.

Hoping to see Javier Derritt emerge at DT. I think he has the potential to be a Nate Tanguay like 4 year starter at that position. I also think Will Moestert is going to be a freshman beast at DE.

Here is my completely un-educated hopes and dreams

- Trey needs to keep developing his passing game. It seemed like he was given pretty limited read responsibilities (I suspect many of his plays are "here read these two options based on the defense, if not run).
- I hope the O Line gets back to mauling people. It seems like our ability to move people out of the way wasn't as great as it has in years past, which translated into issues running up the middle.
- Running Back involvement needs to improve. These guys need to carry more of the load, or Trey will be a cripple by the time he is a senior.
- Defensive Front Seven - Needs to shore up against the run.
-Coaching - Roehl needs to continue to develop. My completely uneducated gut tells me that the staff is good at planning, but needs work making adjustments during the game.

That’s the biggest difference in fbs opponents we have played. We matched up with those other teams because they play physical football and like to run it. Oregon has better skill positions and like to spread it out which might give us a lot more problems.

Same thing is said about every FBS game. KSU was gonna kill us with Lockett, Thompson and Hubert. Iowa State had Lazard, Bundrage and Bibbs. We'll have to own the trenches to win. Keep it close and have a shot at the end.

It is an interesting matchup in this regard, isn't it? I think you can argue that Kstate was more spread than physical in 2013, but the speed in Oregon will be different, I think. I also think the Oregon D is going to be more physical than anything we've seen. If you've watched them this last year, not only are they skilled up and down on D, they hit hard, too.

I have no idea how this will translate into a W for the Bison, but I'm interested to see how it plays out.

New QB and 4 new OL. I know their LT is a stud, but also replace 3 DL and 2LB will be True frosh. That is a recipe I like.

I watched the Oregon-Montana game on youtube and it gave some boosting confidence. Oregon losing pretty much their entire OL and QB will be a big deal for them regardless of what anyone says. Our offense will have to use the entire offensive personnel and playbook to challenge Oregon's very stout defense. We'll have a veteran OL, a huge stable of great RB, two huge 6-6 TE, 3-4 very capable and exciting WR and the best QB in the entire stadium. If the defense gets the best players on the field especially with Cox, Kaczor and Hankey at LB. Tutsie and probably Weber at S. Interior DL needs to get locked up and I think Lane Tucker will be huge in this game. CB opposite Hayes will be big. We have more than a chance folks.

They will definitely have some skill players that we will have a VERY difficult time bottling up- I think they will definitely get their fair share of points...

But I also think our offense will get what is theirs as well.. We averaged 4YPC against KSU and the Iowas. And thats what they are desinged to do- stop the run. I dont think Oregon is genetically a run stopping team (although their DE is a future 1st rounder IMO). I think we will see a very conservatively called game on offense (a la KSU and Iowa). and it will be death by a thousand cuts... and Trey Lance's legs.

I'll say this. We beat those good FBS programs. It was impressive. But in my mind, there is no doubt that they continue to overlook us. These P5 kids have been told 90 Trillion times how they are elite, no one is better, no on can compare to your talent, strength, speed etc. It is human nature to believe that they will sleepwalk to a win over NDSU because we are "less than" them. we are LITERALLY being scheduled for what their AD foolishly believed would be an "easy, pre-season victory before the big-boy schedule".

They are playing Ohio State the next week, EASILY the biggest game of the season for them. No matter how much their coaches emphasize it, these hot shot 4-5 star kids will overlook us so hard, they wont be able to know which was is up by the 4th quarter.

Ducks are a taller order and do recruit athletes that can step in day one. I think their D and team in general play far more physically than under Helfrich. Still, I doubt their D will be better than Iowa’s was a few years back. That Iowa defense was full of NFL talent and we ran all over them. If our D isn’t ready the Ducks will roll us, but if we play like we typically play vs P5 we can win this

The coaches are very high on Terrell Hall. I have not heard them talk about CB Jayden Price. Has anyone heard how he is progressing?
He was the fastest player in his signing class (10.72 100 meters) and he has good size (6'0, 184) for a corner. I was hoping he would develop into a real good player.

IMO no question this offense will rewrite record books. Calling it now, ahead of ‘96 Marshall, which included the likes of sophomore Chad Pennington and freshman Randy Moss.

I think we need to be careful what we wish for with the "open up the offense" business. It reminds me a lot of Carson's senior year when the offense took a turn towards finesse instead of physical. A lot of people were predicting the best offense ever, which the offense did do fairly well but couldn't get it done when it counted and cost us two regular season losses. Once Carson got hurt we had to go back to the "old" ways of physical ball control offense and the Bison ran the table.

So that being said I hope we focus on the physical running game with our good backs and the play action pass game. That will be a very tough offense to stop.

I don’t get it either. Everyone points out his lack of speed. Kid leads the team in tackles I think, what more do you want? He’s named the smartest guy in Frisco, no one mentions it. He’s a ND kid, grew up wanting to be a Bison, he’s a Bison and the starting MLB. I’m happy about it.

I hear you but I’m talking about using a pass to a 6-6 TE for 3 yards rather than trying a QB sneak. If running is working than fine. If it’s not we have to incorporate the pass game in a creative way with the TEs included. Dink and dunk with some rushing all the way down the field. No Wentz esc trying too much with the arm and not rushing Trey 30 times. I don’t I think we have a hell of a chance to win that game.

While Pennington was, in fact, a member of the 1996 Marshall football team, he did not play. He redshirted that season. Eric Kresser was the starting quarterback in '96.
