View Full Version : Indiana and Northwestern Duals

Big Bird

NDSU takes on Indiana Friday night before heading to Northwestern on Sunday. I'm expecting a win against Indiana and a loss against Northwestern.

133, 149, 165, 197, and HWT should all go to NDSU vs Indiana, with 157 leaning toward NDSU and 184 being a toss up. NDSU will have a shot at both 125 and 141 too. I'll be curious to see if NDSU goes to Noah Cressell in his native state at 184. Pottinger hasn't been great and maybe Cressell gets a spot start.

Northwestern will be a tougher test. NDSU should win 165 and HWT. 125, 141, 149, 174, and 184 are all possible toss ups, but most favor Northwestern. Frankly, we just match up poorly with them.

NDSU forfeits at 125...not good for winning the dual

These student announcers on BTN plus are tough to listen to.

Sykora had a 14-0 lead after the first and gets a turn for the second period tech fall.

NDSU trails 6-5

He had a couple nice shots, but no points.

This next one should be tough but a good one. Fernie Silva has matches where he is legitimately great, but others where he struggles. Should be ANOTHER good test for Franek

Exactly. Van Maanen has some low level attacks that have been effective in the past and is typically good in scrambles. After he didn't score on his initial shot in the first, he kind of shut it down.

I don't think these guys have ever seen a wrestling match before. I can't think of a single thing they've said that was correct

Not to interrupt the convo here, but does NDSU have a physical, badass wrestler? And no, not being a dick. Wrestle guys will know what I’m asking. I’m planning to go to some matches this season, so just wanna know what to expect/look for.

I would love to see Metz be that guy, heck, I want to see all of them be that type of guy. To be an All-American, you have to have a desire to "break" your opponent physically and mentally and not be nice about it. This is one of the reasons I was glad to hear that many of them trained for a bit at the USOTC this past Spring/Summer. Training with the country's best is similar to when Wentz came back to Fargo with some of his Eagle WRs and Stick (maybe there were other Bison too) got the opportunity to work in with them.

I hope when the Bison athletes were at the USOTC, they got an opportunity to witness and learn how elite athletes like my favorite wrestler, Jordan Burroughs, trains:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eudqXyamiPQ

If this guy was about three inches taller, wrestling would have missed out such a talent, as I believe he would have been playing a DB in the NFL.

Fogarty. He isn't the fastest guy, but he is more physical than everyone he faces and generally just bullies people into submission.

Big Bird

Van Maanen takes on Yahya Thomas, another ranked Wildcat.

Super explosive and has looked great up at 149 this year

Big Bird
11-24-2019, 07:25 PM
Van Maanen trails 8-0 after one. Needs to decide who he wants to be on the mat. He's had a touhg opening schedule, but he hasn't done well in any position this year.

Big Bird
11-24-2019, 07:29 PM
Van Maanen loses 11-0. Ugly weekend for him.

#3 Ryan Deakin vs Jared Franek. Huge test for Franek

Big Bird
11-24-2019, 07:32 PM
At the end of last year, Deakin had a propensity to gas in the third in close matches. Big question is can Franek keep it close and wear on him a little?

Deakin over a minute of RT after one and leads 2-0

Big Bird
11-24-2019, 07:35 PM
Franek doesn't have an answer for Deakin so far. Down 8-1 after two and Deakin nearly has riding time locked.

Big Bird
11-24-2019, 07:41 PM
Franek loses by major decision. All 5 weights have been of the bonus point variety.

Hopefully Fogarty continues that.

If De La Riva is in the lineup I'd pick him at 174 (assuming he is relatively healthy and in shape).

Northwestern has young talent at 184 and 197, and should be favored at those.

Metz should win at HWT

I don't know what the coaches were doing there. Should have cut him at the beginning of the third and tried to win from neutral. Terrible decision to stay on top

De la Riva loses 8-6, and that is largely on the coaches IMO. De La Riva was winning on his feet in the second and they had him stay on top and never get close to a turn

Overall, the score was probably a little closer than the dual actually was.

Great job by the three guys with falls, Degen, Fogarty, and Metz. Outside of them, Sykora wrestled solid and De La Riva looked fine all things considered. It was his first match of the year, and he had to face an NCAA qualifier.

If Midkiff had been in the lineup, it certainly would have been closer, and we may have won another weight.

I'd like to see Van Maanen in an open tournament soon to get some confidence. He just hasn't been pulling the trigger on anything this year. He and Eaton have had tough dual schedules, but they aren't executing nearly well enough to put themselves in the NCAA tournament conversation.
