View Full Version : List of the Best Opposing Players to Ever Play in Fargo

Game week! Soon we will all be blessed to have football back in our lives, and the West lot is about to come to life again. As I was day dreaming about football today, I just started thinking of the some the great opposing players I've gotten to see in person. So, thought it would be fun to have a discussion of the "best of the best" to play against NDSU through the years.

For me, in the recent years, I still can't stop thinking about just how good Jerick Mckinnon was. And Dallas Geodert was a special player even if he played for the bunnies. (Watching him in space was just awesome if you appreciate great football skills.) So, start listing some of the best opposing players you remember. No year limit on this, either. Only qualification is they had to play NDSU in Fargo.

Not the best, but definitely the most hyped/infamous was Rhett Bomar.

That one play moved him for a 4th round pick to a 2nd and earned him many millions more in his career because of it.

DB he outran was fast as well (went on to play for the giants maybe?)

In 1998 Brian Shay of Emporia State lit us up pretty good too in the opener that I remember that year besides the UN_ guy. THink he had a brief stint in NFL. Probably not the caliber of McKinnon or Johnson but still he was up to that point probably one of the best RBs NDSU had seen against them in Fargo??

In the vein, Shakir Bell for Indiana St was the real deal on 2012. Can't believe how he just vanished after her was kicked off the team/suspended or whatever it was.

David Johnson by far. He makes NFL defenses look silly. The most exciting game we ever saw was 2016 with Cooper Kupp and Kendrick Bourne both who are now NFL receivers. Kendrick Bourne had 8 catches for 133 yards that day. Cooper Kupp caught a couple of TD's. I remember being pissed afterwards but in hindsight.. yeah that was a hell of an offense. (although the 3 down lineman was still a stupid idea)

Hate to give props to the Bunnies but Dallas Goedert obviously.

Just trying to remember, but didn't Easton have to lead a drive to get us into FG range to send the EWU game to overtime?

I still stick with what I said in that thread:

David Johnson based on that he never had a bad game against the Bison. If it wasn't for injuries or coaching decisions by UNI, he might have given NDSU more problems.

I can't remember... I do remember EWU missing a long field goal with litter or no time and we went to OT. (i could be remembering wrong) Then we started to play real defense in OT and then lance broke a long one for the game winner. I remember that game was so fun to watch yet so frustrating watching our defense.

Last NDSU drive before O.T. starts around 2:51:30. Three of EWU's receivers (Cooper Kupp, Kendrick Bourne and Shaq Hill) would be on NFL rosters of some sort the following year. Two still remain though with Kupp and Bourne (played well against my Broncos last week). NDSU had a chance to end the game in regulation, but a TD pass was dropped. EWU had a chance to win with a 49-yard FB attempt (wide-left) after getting in position with another deep pass (way too many 50/50 passes went their way).

Amazing how the first two games that season went into O.T. against "pud" FCS teams at home, but NDSU won in regulation against a super powerful, big-time B10 team the next week on the road.

How good was Dave Osborn in college? Had a lengthy NFL career. I've mentioned it before, but I'm surprised none of the F'Hawker posters ever bring him up (UND must not have had much of a weight room back then) along with Chris Kuper, who ironically is coaching alongside with Bill Kollar in Denver.

Unless the word “kicker” is somewhere in the description of the “best” list, it seems hard to justify including kickers.
