WDAY TV reported last night that it was UND that offered Grant Nelson of Devils Lake. UND Coach Sather also offered Nelson when he was coach at Northern State. So did NDSU offer Nelson yesterday or was the Prep Hoops tweet incorrect about the NDSU offer?

Nice! Welcome Grant!

So the last 4 Bison MBB (freshman) commits have been from Breckenridge, Moorhead, Jamestown, and Devil's Lake. I like the focus on the local kids. Now comes the hard part in developing them all into good D1 mid-major players.

Up in ND visiting my family. My nephew plays with Grant Nelson. I watched Grant play 2 summer games today and am super excited for his future. He is extremely long and athletic. A few things that stood out:

He is well conditioned, playing nearly all but a couple of minutes each game (although never appearing fatigued). His ball-handling skills amazed me. Bringing the ball up the court, between the legs, behind the back, quick with shake and bake moves. He can shoot the 3 or drive to the basket and finish strong with several different moves. One play he had a steal at the top of the opposing key and drove it down for a rim-rocking monster jam. He has great hands and is a very solid passer. Strong ball awareness which helps him snag rebound after rebound.

One more year of high school to develop. He has the skills to play any position on the court. His game reminds me of Mike Daum. I believe he can be a true impact player for the Bison and has the potential to be a star. Glad we have him. Great get by Richman!

Nice to see Dalton Banks’ retweets of Vinnie & Ross!
Would be an amazing get for NDSU, and Richman & Co were in on his recruiting early, but that is an impressive offer list that Banks has so far. Cal Poly has also offered. Banks is now the 3rd ranked prospect (Ryan James & Prep Hoops) in his class in Wisconsin - impressive!
Banks played for a loaded @adidasD1MN team this summer which got mega attention......

https://www.ksby.com/sports/cal-poly-basketball-offers-point-guard-dalton-banks?_amp=true&__twitter_impression=true

In his junior year at Eau Claire North, Banks averaged 23.3 points per game and shot nearly 45% from the floor. He also dished out 7.1 assists, hauled in 7.1 rebounds, and sniffed out 2.6 steals.

Cal Poly is Banks' ninth offer. He said he expects to make his final decision this fall.

It's two scholarship players and a walk-on.... hardly an overload on local kids. I'd hold off on judgement for a while. Most people thought Dexter Werner wouldn't amount to much either and I would've loved to have gotten a Dexter Werner in every recruiting class if they could've.

JohnnyExtacy

14 players on the roster. 1 is not on scholarship and I don't know who. 4 seniors. I wold assume the JuCo and Skunkberg are coming in on scholarship. Maybe the other scholly is going to the player that is not on scholarship but already on the roster.

There's 4 seniors opening up scholarships next year right? That would mean they'd have scholarships for Carter, Nelson, and Skunberg plus one other. Maybe whoever it is that is off scholarship this year is going on next year or they're holding a scholarship for a late signing period recruit since they'd only be at 14 total next year still with these 4 new guys.

Correct, I hadn't heard anything about Haman prior to today so my guess is either he's a walk on or preferred walk on. I'm assuming somebody currently on the roster was a 5 for 4 deal but as much as I've asked around I've never confirmed anything. My assumption is everybody currently on the roster will be on scholarship next year and then Nelson, Skunberg and Carter as well. That would be 13.

Donald Carter III - PG - is the 4th signee today

Carter (Scottsdale Community College) started all 30 games last season as a freshman at Scottsdale CC in Arizona, averaging 13.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.4 assists while shooting 49 percent overall. Originally from Minneapolis, Carter has spent the past six years in the Phoenix area and will come to NDSU with two seasons of eligibility remaining.

"Donald is a tough, physical lead guard that has won everywhere he has been," said Richman. "He's a great young man who truly loves the game and is a great competitor and leader."

Nice to see a PG in the recruiting class. Someone who can create his own shot, create off the dribble, get into the lane was a big need for next season.

Carter is a 24% 3pt shooter...not the most appealing.

Also did Richman owe someone at Davies a favor? The Haman kid averaged 6 pts last year at Davies in North Dakota. Sure, he's a Walk on, but I'm betting there are kids that averaged at least 10 pts a game from bigger schools and states that would have taken this offer in a heartbeat.

Maybe it's about..."culture".

Grant Nelson article by Greg DeVillers GF Herald

https://www.grandforksherald.com/sports/basketball/4837537-Devils-Lakes-Nelson-standing-out-above-the-basketball-crowd

...... The 6-10 senior is the centerpiece of the offense and defense for the Firebirds, who are off to a 3-2 start. Nelson has averages of 28.8 points, 19.6 rebounds and 5 blocks per game this season. That production doesn’t come by just planting himself underneath the basket.
“Grant’s actually not a real good back-to-the-basket player,’’ Devils Lake coach Derek Gathman said. “He’s more of a forward type, attacking the basket off the dribble. We hear all the time: ‘Post him up.’ But that wouldn’t be the best way to use his abilities.’’......

...... Nelson has signed to play basketball at North Dakota State University.

He emerged as an impact player last season. He averaged 16.4 points, 11.8 rebounds and 5.1 rebounds, earning second team all-state honors......

Sounds like Rocky Krueser 2.0 except even better off the dribble. I haven't seen him play but from the sounds of the article he could be a really great player in the summmit league

Do any coaches even try to develop a post game on kids with some size in high school? Seems like if kids aren't developing some post moves early on, it's too late when they get to the college game. Seems everyone is allergic to the paint and the rim, but what do I know.

And what's your take on him???

He's very good. They were down by 22 at one point in the 2nd half and cut it to (I think) six before losing by seven. He played a prominent role in that comeback. He didn't shoot all that well but still wound up with 28. I think they rely on him a bit too much.

Mr Meaty

He is a solid player. Can create his own shot with good ball skills. Needs to keep his emotions in check some. Gets frustrated and presses too much then. Just let the game come to you and take it.

Watched Skunberg hang 35 on Century tonight. First time I've seen him play in person and he was a man amongst boys. Century had no one that belonged on the court with him outside of Cade Feeney. Century had no one else with the athleticism needed to keep up with Skunberg and Feeney was just too short to guard him.

NCAA Division I Lipscomb and North Dakota State have recently expressed interest in 2020 G Karter Thomas (6-0) of Oshkosh West.

10:50 AM · Jan 16, 2020·

My North Dakota math tells me there will be 10 returning scholly players next season, plus 3 signed recruits. So unless there is a 5/4 offer here, or with one of the other signees, this may just be due diligence recruiting in case a scholarship unexpectedly becomes available.

Karter Thomas sounds like an under the radar type recruit, coming back from an ACL tear.
Perhaps a PG who could be redshirted? Especially with a JC point guard signed. Plus combo guard Jarius Cook will be back from his redshirt as a sophomore.

Potentially sign him on a 5 for 4? PG is definitely a position of need going forward so if we can find a good one that slips through the cracks we should make it work.

If Jamestown is #1 in the state then it's a down year. Skunberg is a good rebounder and outside shooter. His help defense was non- existent or was coached to not leave his man which I doubt. Decent passer. He did not take the ball to the rim very often. Did not wow with athleticsm imho. I did not see much on court leadership/communication with team mates.

That's not my understanding of a true 5 for 4 offer. What Chapo describes is walking on and hoping for the best, for a scholarship down the road . . . something any walk-on would hope for.

A 5 for 4 is a guarantee of a scholarship in years 2-5 after paying your way in year 1. In year 1, nothing was available, so they offer you a 5 for 4, but consider you a scholarship player as soon as something is available in year 2.

And Technically, a 5 for 4 could be a scholarship in year 1 with one other year where you are not on scholarship. . . year 1 scholarship, year 2 no-scholarship (all 13 committed elsewhere that year), year 3 yes, year 4 yes, year 5 yes . . . thus a 5 for 4.

Grayson Haman with 17 points, Ty Satter 14, in Davies (22-1)
win Thursday night over Devils Lake.

(Grant) Nelson, a North Dakota State commit, finished with 24 points, 18 rebounds, four steals and four blocked shots.
(for Devils Lake)

https://www.inforum.com/sports/basketball/4984664-Hektner-sinks-8-3-pointers-to-lead-Davies-into-East-Region-boys-title-game

Davies (22-1) is a tall, athletic team (three 6’ 7” + players, at least 2 future college football players). Doesn’t depend on one player for scoring.

Zero. He didn't have any D1 offers. The kid's a walk-on, like Jared Samuelson was. He probably won't ever play significant minutes. He did receive a scholarship offer from NDSU for Football, which to the football fans must mean he's a real good athlete.

I have watched Skunberg play several games. He can create is own shot. Plays good defense and is a tremendous players. Above average baller handles and is really smooth shooting stroke but inside and outside. Only have watched Nelson last night. For a tall guy does handle the ball well. Seems really smooth on his spins around the basket. A shot blocker for sure. Going to have to put on some weight. Excited to have both coming to NDSU.

That was a little rough last night. Jamestown played so well and had a good game plan on him. He got his stride in 2nd half but lead was too much. There is plenty of talent with both players to see great things coming at NDSU.

SDSU will definitely be 1, they only lose Key and he didn't play half the season anyway. WIU may not win a game in the league next year. USD is losing A LOT so unless they get some transfers or a freshman to carry the load like SDSU did this year they'll have a tough season. Omaha loses Gibson and Robinson but they have some good young pieces to still go along with Pile so I'd have them at number 3 heading into next season. I'd say outside of that top 3 the league is looking a little weak again next year at this point.
