Article on a 2020 recruit (interest) who is a Bison legacy:

https://wisconsin.rivals.com/news/2020-ol-gunnar-kilen-ready-for-his-next-round-of-visits

After taking visits to Iowa, Wyoming, Northern Illinois, Cincinnati and North Dakota State this past fall, Gunnar Kilen is gearing up for his next round of college trips.

A 6-foot-6, 270-pound in-state offensive tackle from Verona High School, Kilen, who already has an offer from North Dakota, has a handful of junior-day visits on his calendar.......

Even before reading that he is being looked at by the Bison for the safety position, watching the video of him reminded me of the size and movement of Grimsley.

Great looking athlete.

Which coach is recruiting KS? I see there are a ton of 'targets' on 247 in the state of Kansas.

Coach Morgan is in some of the latest photos with KC folks.
Coach Blazek has posted from there also, iirc he has previous experience there from his Iowa days.

Some of that targeting goes back to the previous staff, but the current staff seems to be following up on that recruiting - now how many of those Coach Klieman offers remains to be seen......

So we'd turn him into a TE?That would be a disgusting waste of talent if that was to happen. Bison coaches have been pretty good at putting the right personnel in the right positions....so far.

Anyway, enough talking like he signed with the Bison already. This kid would be a huge get for the Bison, like another Jabril Cox-ish with that speed and awareness... According to Rivals, it appears that the only school he visited was Minnesota, I'm sure he is waiting for that in-state offer from Wisconsin. Like the size of the OL in Minnesota high schools this year. Good year for the Bison to recruit one or two 6’ 5” - 6’ 8” OT types.
Hope the 6’ 7” - 6’ 8” Mason Miller is one of them. He could still decide to play basketball instead, but I would guess his upside is greater in football.

What are you talking about, Dunn is 5’9 and was pegged as a smaller back coming into NDSU. Bringing an athlete in for an unofficial visit doesn’t equate to targeting him.

They have a big bruiser in Saybien and Coffield who also was pegged as a smaller back is over 200lbs.

And they targeted Russell and Hull last year and missed out late in the process.

Trust the recruiters and the strength and conditioning coaches.

I agree. People get so caught up in size it is ridiculous. Most of the great all time RBs in the NFL were under six feet. Quite a few of them were right at Dunn's size for height and weight. Being slightly shorter allows for quicker cutting for the most part. Ryan Smith is the exact size of this back when they brought him in. If he is a great athlete we will find him a spot.

Getting 3 athletes under 5’ 10” in one recruiting class (2019) was certainly out of the ordinary for NDSU. (zero in 2018, two 5’ 10” guys)
With 3 in one class, will not be surprised that one plays right away, helps balance out the class size-distribution. And of course, someone may change position.
As stated, they did try on a couple others RB’s, should be easier to get a commit this year from a every down back with Cofield and Clark and Wilson a year older. This year’s 1st RB offer - TK Marshall (Minneapolis Southwest) - is listed at 5’ 11” 180

Jalen Bussey - favorite (?) to play right away, especially on special teams
Kaden Kunz - preferred walk-on
Kobe Johnson - late period signee from Georgia

I believe all 3 are good sprinters in track as well.

Okay most might have been a stretch (typing and thinking quickly never works well) but look at how many are 6 feet and under. I personally love someone just under 6 feet that is over 200 as they tend to be built with low center of gravity and have great lateral quickness.

What’s wrong with that is 5’9 is shorter than 5’11. Saying you want bigger backs and then listing Dunn who is 5’9 is weird.

Or are you questioning why the coaches are recruiting players that they think are the best fit for the system instead of recruiting taller back that they don’t think fits their system?

23Bison
04-08-2019, 07:02 PM
See you are trying to argue with me over what style/body type of RB I like and I’m not sure why. You listed Lance Dunn and all I did is compliment him on being a great back but that’s not the body style I like for a RB.

As for the coaches recruiting smaller RBs I guess that’s up to them. Seems we have plenty of guys in that 5’8”-5’9” frame. Or you can try to put words in my mouth some how and spin this in a way that makes me look like I don’t like what our coaches are doing. A guy asked why we seem to be recruiting smaller RBs and I agreed.

Except for the use of the word most.

He said most of the all time great RBs in the NFL, which could be argued that his list is smaller than around 50 or so backs (RBs, HBs, FBs) listed in the NFL HOF. Of the Top-25 rushers of all time (statistically - http://www.espn.com/nfl/history/leaders/_/stat/rushlead), only 12 make the list, with the first coming in at #8 (Adrian Peterson). In this case, he would be correct.

Of the 50 or so backs in the NFL, I think about 26 are six foot or taller and many played in 70s or prior. In this case he would be wrong.

It just depends on what he meant in reference to "all-time great RBs in the NFL."

Funny thing is in the 90 and early 2000’s nobody wanted small receivers. Now people are finding out they are quicker with their routes and in some ways tougher to defend in the slot.

To be fair only one idiot is looking at this as a problem. The rest of the posters have at least minimal intelligence to understand this is not a loss for NDSU

Do you realize how dumb you have to be to think this kid or Zenzen would’ve chose NDSU if they were in the mountain west. Neither of them would’ve even answered the phone from a G5 school with no opportunity to win a national championship

Odds & Ends from Junior Day visits I saw retweeted by Bisonation

- new offer, different recruiting area - North Carolina (Weddington)
Alec Mock - LB - saw listed at both 6’ 2” 220 and 6’ 3” 230, anyway good size for a high school LB. Also very good at shot put and discus in track & field. Will be interesting to see what his connection was to Fargo & NDSU when Bison Report does an interview. Has 6 other offers, 1st was Miami (Ohio), also Eastern Michigan, William & Mary, Columbia, Toledo and old friend Wofford.

- Burro sighting!
Hillsboro/CV ATH/RB/LB Oscar Benson (6’ 2” 180) visited NDSU again.

- Preston Yohnke from Parkers Prairie. Am assuming he is a younger brother of this year’s signee, Travis. Preston is listed at 6’ 3” 250, a T/DE.

- Mason Weber from Bishop Miege High School in Kansas. Listed as a 6’ 3” 240 DE. Jasir Cox is from Bishop Miege.

- Adam Kusler - 6’ 2” 205 - LB/WR - Sioux Falls (Roosevelt)
Has an offer from South Dakota.

- And Aaron Kusler - also listed at 6’ 2” but at 210.
All-State South Dakota football players.

- 2000+ yard rusher last season -
Rashad Lampkin - 5’ 9” :hide: 190 Brookfield WI (Central)
Recently ran 6.72 in the 55m.

Mason Miller (Ada) made his visit to Iowa - Tim Polasek is his area recruiter - no offer yet.
Iowa has 2 OL commits already, and iirc will take one more at some point. A 4 star type probably could have a commitable offer and come on board at any time, otherwise the Hawkeyes are waiting & watching.
(edit: looks like there are approximately 5 more Iowa offers out to uncommitted 6’ 5” + OL, all 3 or 4 star prospects)
247 has Miller currently ranked as the #19 prospect in Minnesota and #160 nationally for his position and as a 2 star.

Thankful to receive an offer from North Dakota State University!
@Coach_Entz

Aaron Witt - 6’ 5” 238 - DE - Winona MN

- very interesting offer & situation here (at least to me)

- just decommitted from Minnesota

- NDSU, Northern Iowa, Wyoming & Ohio immediately swoop in with new offers

- Iowa, Iowa State & Nebraska waiting in the wings, visit(s) being lined up

- 247 ranks Witt #5 in Minnesota preps, crystal ball
prediction is now 75% Iowa, 25% Minnesota

- Coach Entz was an assistant at Winona State, certainly knows the area
(AJ Blazek also coached at Winona State)
(assistant David Braun played and coached at Winona State)

- incoming FR CB Terrell Hall is from Winona

Sounds like Witt wants to go through the recruiting process some more.

Decommitments happen all the time in CFB recruiting, just rare to see it from a Minnesota kid with the Gophers. Hasn't happened in a few years.

I expect the #Gophers to push hard to get Witt back.

Also has offers from Syracuse, Illinois State, Northern Illinois, Western Michigan, SDSU, South Dakota, Columbia, Yale

If not the Syracuse offer, then being offered by his homestate Badgers yesterday (although Bortolini has not committed yet).
247 had Tanor Bortolini ranked #9 in Wisconsin overall

Don’t know who is recruiting him, but he plays a lot of LG in the videos, willing to put the other guy on the ground. #75 is a nice number choice, big brother Dillon wears it playing LT for the Bison.

And another OL - Kel Stroud - 6’ 5” 260 - Chapman KS (KState interest)

It is hard to gauge whether the offers from some of the FBS schools actually have any weight behind them. Those schools make a lot of offers that they don’t have any intent on keeping. Most are contingent on whether or not “better” players accept offers with those schools. The average FBS school in 2019 extended offers to over 200 players. They signed an average of 24. Some of that attrition is due to players committing to other schools, but some of the attrition is also due to schools using offers as a Plan C, where they don’t actually intend to sign a kid unless Plan A and Plan B fall through.

I’m seeing that as well and it doesn’t bother me I guess. You can’t get guys like Weertz if you don’t offer them. I really do think we have a shot at a handful of the bigger recruits.

Precisely, operating in that arena means our close rate might a bit lower, but any close when you are competing with 2 or 3 FBS schools, especially P5, is a big deal.

My meandering impressions and unproven opinions :)

- with earlier recruiting season & offers the trend, more NDSU vs FBS offers should happen

- Kansas State affects all this - but am seeing less of Wyoming than earlier years in their Bohl era

- am surprised how many NDSU offers go out to players with multiple FBS offers, but like people point out, FBS offer numbers are off the charts so how serious are they (are they commitable)

- Iowa as someone NDSU runs up against makes sense both from their style of play and the Tim Polasek effect

- I think I am seeing more MACtion, perhaps they see NDSU’s successes and want to recruit those same areas and type players - especially OL

- Western Illinois and Indiana State are overlapping more than they used to (e.g. Missouri Iowa Nebraska, even Minnesota) - did they increase recruiting budgets? (travel)

Pretty on par with the last 5 years and especially for this time of the year. I have noticed more recruiting going on in Missouri and Kansas than years past. Also find it interesting coaches are spreading their wings more buy making visits to other coaches recruiting areas. I’m not sure who brought that Philosophy into this staff but I like it
