The Dauminator with a good night......

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- Mike Daum scored 33 points and grabbed 16 rebounds and South Dakota State beat Omaha 83-73 on Saturday to snap a first-place tie between the Summit League co-leaders.

Daum moved up to 17th on the NCAA's all-time scoring list, passing Allan Houston (Tennessee, last season 1993), with 2,803 points. He posted his fourth straight 30-point game and moved up to second for career rebounds in the Summit League with 1,112. He also had five assists and three steals.

I do think it's a little bit funny that those guys who run that Denver fan blog are so adamantly opposed to adding Augustana because of how it would be so bad for the league, yet they are only a few spots away from the bottom of the barrel in D1 this year. To be clear, I know there are a dozen other reasons that they feel Augie wouldn't be good (alienating outer schools by further Dakota-izing the conference, type of institution compared to the other schools, etc.), and I'm not trying to turn this into another Augie thread, but it does make me laugh a little bit, at least to myself. I feel like, no matter how rough it is for the Vikes those first couple of years, I find it hard to believe we could be that much worse than Denver this year or Western Illinois the past few years.

Getting a little lost in everything is the news that the Summit just got two top-8 seeds in the NCAA WBB tourney. SDSU is a 6-seed with the Summit autobid, and USD was selected as an 8-seed at-large. Only the second time that has happened for the Summit, and the other was way back in 1994. Honest congrats to both the Jacks and Yotes.

Yeah, and he's the not the most efficient with his shots even inside the arc. He's incredibly streaky from 3 based on what I've seen. SDSU is going to have some growing pains next year I think but I'm sure they'll have the talent to contend for the title by the time the SLT rolls around if they can put it together.

Not sad at all to see Daum go but you have to respect what he accomplished. He had a historic career not just by SDSU or Summit League standards but by NCAA D1 standards. I'm not sure if his game translates to the NBA but he's got many more years of playing basketball somewhere for plenty of money if he wants it.

Jenkins shot over 45% from three while attempting 7.7 per game. http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/stats/_/id/4279527/david-jenkins

He's one of the most efficient three point shooters of the last decade in the NCAA https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2821137#slide6

That said, he's quite streaky, tries to do too much at times, and still has a long ways to go on defense and ball control.

I'm glad we have him, and am excited about who we have coming in next year with Grill and others. I think we'll be fine offensively, but am concerned about defense and toughness due to the loss of Tevin King.

Had eligibility issues, went to prep school for a year and had an injury at Memphis this past season. He's long, rangy, and can score it. Go look at his HS dunk highlights.

Interesting that he already has been granted a medical redshirt for last season. I thought a student-athlete had to wait until their 5 year clock was up before they could ask for and be granted a medical redshirt by the NCAA. So, if the article is correct, after he sits out this year he'll be a 3rd year freshman in 20/21. He'll be the same age/class as Sam Griesel and Griesel will be a junior that year.

I really think that article is wrong. I think when it's all said and done, he'll get three playing season at SDSU, not four. The reason he got NCAA approval for that season was because he was injured after he played a few games. That's not the same as getting approval for a sixth-year exemption. And I don't think he'll qualify for one of those unless he has a damn good reason for transferring to SDSU (like a family member nearby is dying or seriously ill). The sixth-year exemption is for student-athletes who involuntarily lose two seasons; the NCAA almost always treats sitting out for a transfer as a voluntary reason.

Yeah, that was my understanding of the medical redshirt rule as well so it would make sense to me that he'd only have 3 years eligibility starting in 20/21. Although I know some student-athletes really bend the rules for that two seasons lost involuntarily thing. The NCAA seems to be surprisingly lenient when it comes to interpreting what dictates losing a season "involuntarily". If he does have some reason like a sick relative for transferring I'd expect he'd be granted immediate eligibility for the 19/20 season at SDSU like Jordan Horn got at NDSU last year. Then he would get 4 years of eligibility down there.

Agreed. Or if the Memphis coach admits in writing that the player was cut from the team for athletic reasons. Most coaches don't like to do that, but there is an NCAA waiver for it. It usually has to do with oversignings and a player losing their roster spot because of it.

In September 2012, the NCAA Division I Subcommittee for Legislative Relief adopted guidelines for waivers based on an assertion that the student-athlete was “run off” by their previous institution. The NCAA staff is directed to grant relief in cases where an athlete is ineligible for the one-time transfer exception due to playing a sport which does not have the exception or because it is their second (or more) transfer between four-year schools.

SDSU will take a step back because they lose almost all of their scoring and minutes from last year, but you're crazy if you think they've fallen off a cliff and won't be competitive. Friedel will play as a Freshman and will have a similar/more of an impact than Griesel did for us this year. If Wingett gets a waiver, they've essentially reloaded and replaced a lot of scoring and will be more athletic. I feel like a there's a floor at SDSU now and they won't ever be bottom half of the conference. Obviously, none of their incoming players are Daum...losing him is going to hurt, but I don't think they fall off as much as some think.

Kind of interesting that the Memphis Grizzlies sign John Konchar as a UDFA but no NBA team (at least that I can tell) has signed Mike Daum.

I figured Daum's game wouldn't translate to the NBA very well but wasn't expecting Konchar to be more sought after.
