Sincere condolences to Darrius and his family. Darrius was very close to his father and thankfully was able to make it home before Louis passed away. It is sad that his father has had health problems since Darrius came to NDSU, so they were only able to attend a few of his games. My prayers to to his family for the strength to get through this difficult time.

I hate to even bring this up, but I'm a little unsure about what the NCAA would think about boosters donating to the Go Fund Me account.

I've done some research and it looks like it has been OK... but I still wish the gofundme site explicitly said do and/or that NDSU was officially OK with it. Anybody know anything about this?

Similar situation: https://www.gofundme.com/omogbo

Good question. But the fact that this service is available to the regular students as well would take that out of the equation. But the service would also open up an avenue for inappropriate payments.

Yeah, my question is more that I'm a booster so it might not be OK for me to donate. Like I said, I've seen some cases where similar campaigns were deemed permissible (the Colorado State one I listed before). And also this one: https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/miami-starts-gofundme-for-artie-burns-family-triples-goal-in-7-hours/ but I don't know if they had to jump through some hoops to make them permissible or something.

First of all, my condolences. Way to young to pass.

Second, I strongly recommend against donating. You are giving cash to his family, it's a kind gesture, but not even close to being in the grey area in my opinion.

Well, I won't donate until I get a definitive answer that it is OK. I really hated to even bring it up.

I read some where that Chase checked it out with NDSU Compliance Director.

JUst got off the phone with Coleen. Donations are permissible as long as they arent a directive from NDSU and they are reasonable.

She also appreciated the call and said if there are any questions what so ever in regards to compliance please---fell free to call as its better to be safe!

"Reasonable" is pretty subjective but I would imagine a bunch of $50-$100 donations would be reasonable.

Just to add to what 56Bison73 posted, I checked with Colleen too.

I do not think that I'd be violating a confidence by sharing the contents of her response:

It is permissible to make a donation, provided you are acting independently and haven’t been asked by the student-athlete’s institution to make the donation.

I would suggest the amount being reasonable and nothing extraordinary.

It'd kind of weird because the big schools have these gofundme links right on their sites, but, then again, the NCAA directives might have changed since then.

Anyway, I felt terrible about even bringing this issue up when the focus should be on the Shepherd family. Mr. Shepherd sounds like a man I would have liked to meet.

Many of the Bison family were able to attend the memorial service for Louis Shepard. (Photos of the football players have been on Facebook.) God bless them all. Had the privilege of sitting by family members at an away game last year. Very kind people! Rest in peace Mr. Shepherd.

Glad to see the donations are piling up. It suck bad enough when someone passes. When you suddenly have a ton of medical expenses, its really an injury to insult.

So we gotta boost that number up or adjust the goal another 10 grand. Medical is expensive AF.
