Pretty much every great Bison defense in recent years has been built on a solid anchor at nose tackle from Matt Gratzek to Leevon Perry to Nate Tanguay. Javier looks like a guy that could be added to that list come the 2020 or 2021 season.

This kid is pretty impressive! It is quite astonishing how many of our current recruits are being noted or are in the running for position player of the year and such in different states. Coaches are doing a great job and need to hang on to them for a couple more weeks and hopefully no longer than the early signing period. WE WILL SEE

Has anyone ever accused Lakes of having a great football mind? Anyone?!?!

It reminds me of when the Vikes had Culpepper. Pre-game guys would tout the opposing QB of being a field-general, great football IQ, and then .... umm Culpepper is a ... umm ... great athlete, etc. No one ever accused Culpepper of being smart.

Get what I mean??? Think Jose Mohler if not.

I agree with an earlier post in regard to the Bison getting that big inside anchor, we are amazingly lean and fast but you can never underestimate the value of a space eater. as quick as the Bison are at the linebacker and safety positions its makes for easy pick'n when the D-line eats space. Yep, Levon Perry a great example.

That assole was so big, when he walked the sidewalk was blocked. My classes were in Living Center. I had to walk from Union to LLC andwhen that big 69 walked in front of you thats it no getting around him. You either got stuck in snow trying to walk around him or late for classes because there was traffic behind him.

Loved Levon! And as good as he was, Drevlow was even better. Best one-two punch in the DL interior the Bison have ever had, IMO, in their history.

Javier Derritt named Kansas 5A Defensive Player of the Year:

http://kansas-sports.com/ks/news/?id=11106&t=michalski-derritt-take-5a-sports-in-kansas-poy-honors

Javier Derritt, Aquinas, Sr., DL

The 6-3, 270-pound Derritt finished with 47 tackles and 11 for loss as Aquinas captured its first state championship in school history. He delivered eight tackles in the 49-28 state title win versus Wichita Northwest and a season-high nine in a signature 41-21 victory versus Bishop Miege on Oct. 12. Aquinas permitted just 14.5 points per contest in a 12-0 season, second-best in the classification. He was perhaps the most dominating interior defensive lineman in all classes of Kansas in 2018 and completely changed anytimes rushing attack, just ask Wichita Northwest.

Maize allowed one fewer point in a 10-2 squad. Last year, Aquinas went 11-2, was the 5A runner-up to Carroll and allowed 18.8 points per game. Derritt has committed to FCS powerhouse and multi-time national champion North Dakota State.

Covid year didnt count. He would have been a 6th year redshirt season. Got his degree and was very durable. Played good in the playoffs. Good luck to Javier

As far as the team goes, we have plenty of young talent at DT. That's what makes the extra covid year challenging for roster management but we may need to snag a DT from the transfer portal

Brennen Pamer, a DE from Davies came into camp at 6-5, 272 last year and was listed as a DT. Curious to see where he is at physically come next August

Also Josh Magin, a DT from Shakpee was 6'5" 273 as a redshirt freshman, up from 261.

If either of those guys can crack 300, we may have some needed girth

It's still Cal and it's a P4. I'm surprised they were in on him that quick though. I'm like Tony, Javier came to NDSU, did his part, and then graduated. Having a Graduate degree from Cal could open some amazing doors for him in the future.

In a lot of these cases the offer is in hand before the player enters the portal. They just can’t make it public until the player enters. I’m guessing with how quick this was that’s what happened here.

I tend to agree with AK on this one. The only reason FSU didn’t get in was because their QB was injured. I’d argue the committee screwed that up anyway, but none of this will matter next year. Also I think there was a recent court decision about the PAC that will preserve its viability as a power conference, but someone will have to help me with the details there…

Javier will get good offers because he's a good player, a good character guy and a safe choice just based on academics. It's a trifecta. That's huge. He's durable too. Many better athletes in the portal but some cant pass classes or stay out of trouble. Javier is a 6th year grown ass man

Some are walk on offers but once 1 Big Ten team offers a walk on, others often follow suit with a scholarship since they recruit the same players. Sometimes it's a calculated defensive move to make sure a competitor isnt getting a player as a walkon and want them to burn a full ride scholarship. On a local level, SDSU didnt offer Peter Haugo because they thought they had a chance to flip him. They offered to ensure we didnt get a deal and had to burn a full ride. There is a scholarship cap for a reason and it's a smart move when we are both offering a player in the future and only have few scholarships left

Think it depends on the scheme and how they want to use him. If you want a good pass rushing DT that can move well and play in space he's a very good player. But I don't think you want to leave him out there against the "big boys" in run stopping situations. DT that can pass rush with great quickness though. Awesome situational player

USC offering him is a total head scratcher for me and it sounds like everyone else as well. He has one year left and there’s no way he’s starting at USC. Why not use the scholly on someone with time left to develop? USC should be able to get a younger, better player no problem.

If Javi is playing meaningful minutes for USC then they are going to have a tough time next fall.

What about Javier screams P5 DT? I’ll tell you what doesn’t; his career stats at NDSU and the FCS level.

He played 56 games and recorded 34 solo tackles, 56 assisted for a total of 90 for his CAREER!!!
He’s 6’2” 280lbs and to my apparent limited knowledge, I don’t believe he was listed as a starter for NDSU. I could be wrong on that one but the fact that I have to question whether he was a starter is also telling. I’m no football genius but I do understand the game. I love the guy but don’t see him as more than a roster spot but there is always a chance that I’m wrong.

He started every game last year (except for the one he missed) and this year so 29 starts. I don't think you're necessarily wrong but it's not the DT's job to make tackles - they're more valuable if they're not getting pushed off the ball on run plays and eating up o-line blocks so the LBs can make plays. I don't know if the lackluster LB play over the last couple years is because the DTs didn't do a good enough job of that or if the LBs just weren't good enough but it was probably a combo of the two.

Still I'd agree that I don't see him being a much of a difference maker at the P2/3/4 level (or FBS level for that matter). Still, I hope he does well. He gave 5 years to NDSU football and graduated (with honors I believe) so he'll always be a Bison in my book.

I think that’s what everyone on here is saying except a UN_ fan…

Maybe he's just going to translate for Marlboro Matt so the other players can understand what he's screaming.

I’m surprised he started that many! Was definitely not the Jabril Cox of the DT room. Good luck to him.

Y didn’t we use him this way?

You're better equipped than I to determine correct or incorrect usage. Just my opinion. Maybe he's a 10 good snaps for them kinda guy, and we asked him to be a every down 35 snap guy. He'd flash, then get blown off the ball.. tough to figure him out
