Gotta admit, good timing by the Jacks, TE recruit is in town, gets to meet Dallas Goedert who was (is?) the highest rated TE for the NFL Draft. Unfortunately for Dallas Goedert, he was too busy recruiting, and he missed running the 40 at SDSU’s Pro Day :)

Per his agent's advice, Dallas Goedert will not run the 40-yard dash today. Doesn't want to risk injury. There are some NFL scouts who are less than pleased

The SDSU 2019 recruit was then offered,
Caden Blum - TE - 6’ 5” 230 - Baraboo, WI
Also has offers from Air Force, Cornell, Fighting Hawks and Eastern Michigan.
Is listed as a 2019 NDSU interest

Isn't the 40 like some holy grail that everyone lives by? If he's afraid of getting hurt running, what's he going to do about blocking and getting tackled?

With social media, schools can sure figure out where everyone is visiting. Now the high schools like to “thank” colleges for stopping by, so it is more than just the players themselves putting it out there. If NDSU is interested, well, that seems to attract attention, and an Eastern Michigan offer can’t be far off......:)

Other MVFC schools can afford to make more offers early, as the players are less likely to commit. So NDSU may have been interested early on, but was not the 1st school to offer. That is one reason I like to post MVFC offers that catch my eye. It is not a surprise when the Bison end up offering some of these players, especially if they attend summer camp in Fargo.

A lot of early NDSU offers end up blowing up into FBS/P5 recruits.
An e.g. - DE Jake Karchinski - 6’ 5” 245 - DePere WI (West DePere)
was an early NDSU offer - this weekend he visits Coach Tim & the Iowa folks, already having been offered by the Hawkeyes. So I do keep an eye on a player like DL Ethan Smith, as he has visited Fargo and might be on the next tier of recruits to be offered. And he was just offered by West Point, gotta like that! And he is in a recruiting area NDSU likes (KC area).

Speaking of recruiting areas NDSU likes, the Mostaert brothers (Lakeville North HS) could also be close to that next tier of recruits to be offered. 2 brothers on the D-Line! If only NDSU had some experience with that situation......:)
If only NDSU had experience recruiting a D-Lineman from Lakeville North High School......:)

Speaking of an early NDSU offer whose recruiting blew up, LB Luke Weerts - 6’ 2” 230 - Batavia IL (14 or so offers, including Rice, Ball State, Ivy League schools)

Another standout from Batavia is three-star ranked inside linebacker Luke Weerts (6-foot-2, 230 pounds) and Weerts also named his Top 3 schools list earlier this week.

"My Top 3 schools list includes Kansas State, North Dakota State and Cincinnati," Weertz said. "I definitely have been working a lot harder at sorting out schools. My Dad and I created a spreadsheet that list schools along with different categories. One side of the spreadsheet are academics and the other side is athletics and I weight the strengths of each school all broken down. I'm looking at factors such as the overall community support of the football program, the overall environment and several other factors."

While it might appear on the surface that North Dakota State, the only FCS school in Weerts Top 3 could be at a disadvantage in his decision making process do not count of the multiple FCS champion Bison.

"North Dakota State football is a big deal," per Weerts. "They sell out the Fargodome for every game. North Dakota State might not be the size of the other two schools but they still have a lot to offer. North Dakota State reminds me a lot of Batavia and like our school football means something to everyone around North Dakota State."

https://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/preps-talk/recruiting-news-and-notes-jirehl-brock-narrows-down-schools-list?amp&__twitter_impression=true

247 is predicting that Luke Weerts commits to Kansas State.

Here is an updated list of SDSU's class so far. I like the DB's you guys are getting this year. I would really like the Jacks to land Samuel-Salih Fort but it looks like he had a pretty good time up at NDSU this past weekend so it may be tough to get him to Brookings. Anyone else a little surprised by the lack for verbals from UNI and USD?

Watched his junior highlights and it's a lot of lobs down the field to open guys. Would much rather see him hit short and intermediate routes than wide open lobs. He had a few tosses across that field that better showed his arm strength. Looks really athletic however.

Did he camp up here, does anyone know?

Interesting thing that I noticed right away was his designation for his position was qb/ath. Could NDSU be going after him as an athlete? They love turning former qbs into studs at other positions.

I didn't really see a ton of arm talent that makes me want him as a qb. Have to be thinking, with no one really setting themself apart behind Stick that they could pitch starting as a redshirt freshman to a high quality qb.

Here is WestSideRabbit’s latest recruiting blog for SDSU - What’s Next?
(In recruiting - After the 13ish verbals SDSU has so far)
Lots of overlap with NDSU, as is typical, including some of my favorite targets, such as

Evan Hull - RB - Maple Grove (WR points out this is Jake Wieneke’s HS)

Peter Udoibok - WR - Cretin Derham Hall - 6’ 4” WR, hmmm.....

There are a number of players hoping for that right FBS offer, including these 2, so will NDSU prevail in the end?
Are these examples of players the Bison hold a couple schollies open just in case?

DB Samuel Fort, OL Bo Donald and OL/DL Jared DePriest are some of the other common recruiting targets.

That is a bit of a mystery......
My only guess is it is a one man class creating that in the short-term.
TE Billy Riviere is highly rated, currently, in Minnesota. His 2 FBS offers (Air Force, Eastern Michigan) could also help make him more highly-rated than anyone in SDSU’s class. GopherHole has Riviere at #18 in Minnesota, iirc saw him at 12 somewhere else. Did not see a SDSU offer for him, they recruited a different TE from Timber Lake SD.
I don’t think The other 4 verbals the Fighting Hawks have had any other FCS offers.

I think there a couple more offers out to Arizona kids still so we’ll see if they can get a couple more in. Having Jimmy Rogers (AZ native) recruit Arizona sure helps. Considering NDSU took both kids with Lennon's size and future possible position(s) at South and Davies (whom everyone outside of UND knows are the top prospects), why would they bother with Lennon? Along with what you said about his father's ties to the school up north. Met coach at my wife's Master's graduation in April. Super nice guy. Stacking chairs for U of Mary now.

NDSU thought the slightly slower, less athletic TE's in Fargo were better. Or they didn't want to get beat out publically so they didn't offer due to his name. Or both.

Who else had offers out to the kids from South and Davies since that apparently is the only way to tell who best recruits are? Do you have something that shows those two above the West Fargo kid or just making an assumption off of what you read here?

And I'm curious about your "stacking chairs" comment? Are you saying it is below the athletic director to actually help out with things around campus?

Yes, it did. Talk about spin. You can always find a gem or two at that level, but not when it makes up virtually an entire class. Your coaches aren't talented enough to develop them. Personally, I love it. "In Bubba We Trust".

Yeah, there are a few on SS that already think this kid could be the second coming, but I think most are just happy that we offered a QB, after not offering one last year (seriously, wtf?). As for the "In Bubba We Trust", I know I have backed off on it a bit. Yeah, he took a crap program from Muss and improved it, and made the playoffs ... that's all great, but last year was a disaster. Injuries suck and killed us, but that just means he had not beefed up the depth chart as he should of. The biggest red flag for me is keeping the OC on staff. UND doesn't have the talent or depth of NDSU, but there are some very talented pieces. No doubt that Santiago and Oliveira are really good running backs, and Santiago can line up at WR; but Rudolph consistently employs some of the most predictable and unimaginative plays he can. When you don't have depth, you may want to try to utilize your strengths in a different way. Even in the playoff year, Rudolph's offensive scheme left plenty to be desired.

As far as I'm concerned, Bubba missed his chance to make his staff changes. If Rudolph crashes and burns, that is on Bubba as well.

As for recruiting, Bison fans can laugh at UND all they want, but I just don't know if there is much UND can do right now to win many recruiting battles. NDSU and SDSU are both so much more established, and have the consistently winning programs. UND has to maximize the potential of the few big recruits they do get, and hit on a few of the under the radar guys. With QB I always like Studruds mentality, he was certainly tough, but his arm and vision just weren't there. Hoping Ketteringham can step up UND's QB play this season, but we won't know until we get into some games. Definitely more QB depth than we have had at the D1 level, but still need to see some proven results.

I don't think that 2017 was an accurate reflection of the team's potential because of injuries; but the same could be said about the 2016 season, with several close games that required turnovers and comebacks. So where are we? Hoping this year will show some stability. If we can stay healthy, and our OC can change his gameplan, maybe we can see the potential. As much as I love my team, there is a lot to prove. Based on last year, UND would get beat up pretty bad in the Valley (killed MO St. then got killed by USD), but in two years? .... well, we will see which was UND trends over the season. Regardless, I'm glad that we will be playing some regional opponents.

I think that you have posted a pretty good assessment of the state of affairs at UN_ and I have no doubt that you guys are doing the best you can. I am skeptical that you are going to have a quality 2019 class with the type of recruits you are getting with the exception of a couple of players. You had better build depth and an offensive line or you won't have a running game and your quarterbacks will not last very long. Playing a couple of Valley teams gave you a taste of things, but two games against 5th and 7th place finishers is nothing like the season long guantlet.

Actually, it's going just fine. Coach Bob has hauled in some dang good recruits the last several years. Don't see any difference in 2019. We're shopping at the same meat market as the rest of the MVFC. It just stands out when several UND commits have their other offers from a who's who of NSIC schools. You usually don't see that when following MVFC recruiting.

5 commits so far - seems like quality, not quantity so far.

I’m not going to go watch film on a FH recruit, but this QB seems like a good get for Grand Forks.
Especially considering there wasn’t a QB recruit last season for the FH’s (iirc). So then the question becomes who is the 2nd QB recruit for the class, Not if there should be one. Perhaps a JC or a FBS transfer QB.

Great stats for the QB, comes from a football family, and if Omaha.com ranks him #10 overall in Nebraska, and #1 in the State for QB’s, well, they are 1 of the go-to groups in Nebraska for that.

Talked to an SIU coach before my game last night. He was on the sideline with a national top 20 team (Michael Tutsie's school). They have a commit from their starting running back who is a serious Mr. Football candidate. He would be a bigger recruit but he's only 5'7". Strong and quick. Their starting receiver is one of the top in the country and was a man among boys. Their QB is Jeff George's son...all 3 could win Mr. Football.

One Nebraska recruit I’ve been keeping an eye on is Cole Aniello - 6'6" 300 - OL - Omaha NE (Millard West).
NDSU still needs an OL recruit IMO, but currently no sign of an offer to Aniello. Aniello has a scholly offers from South Dakota & SDSU, among others, and last month got a preferred walk-on offer from Nebraska. He is a Home-State guy for the Cornhuskers, so would a Bison offer be enough against that???

Here is an article on Cameron Baker - 6’ 2” 225 - LB/FB - Council Bluffs IA (Thomas Jefferson)

https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/high-school/recruiting/2018/10/01/iowa-athlete-cameron-baker-near-end-his-winding-road-recruitment-northern-iowa-uni-wyoming-nebraska/1487705002/

Looks like Northern Iowa is the favorite here, perhaps his only commitable offer.
Nebraska is very active with their walk-on program, so perhaps that will still happen. Still time for Craig Bohl & Co to get serious as well, if Baker remains healthy.

Baker had an early offer from NDSU, but this looks like an example of a recruit who, by not committing early, no longer has an offer due to the Bison having success with priority targets. (3 LB commits plus ATH’s plus FB’s)

bruinbison
10-09-2018, 04:57 PM
Zack Pelland - 6’ 4” 250 - DE - Gurnee IL (Warren Township)

South Dakota is one of Pelland’s 3 final choices in his recruitment. LaFayette and Colgate are the others.
Earlier this recruiting season Pelland was a 2019 NDSU offer, but the Bison were since able to get multiple DLine commitments, probably ending his recruitment by the Bison.

Chris Reames - 6’ 7” 220 - DE/TE - Van Meter IA
Is hoping for a FBS offer, specifically the homestate Iowa Hawkeyes.
Reames was (is ?) a 2019 NDSU offer. It was easy to dream on a 6’ 7” DE, even if he only turned out to be 6’ 5ish. Could have been the next Derrek Tuszka type.

Northern Iowa is one of many FCS offers Reames possesses. MFarley & DLine Coach Bryce Paup have to be hoping Iowa gets their higher rated DLine recruits and that the 6’ 7” DE falls into their laps.
Also has offers from MVFC teams Illinois State, USD, Fighting Hawks , Western Illinois among his other offers.

I remember, in the past, a Coach, perhaps Coach Bohl, said that defensive linemen (DE’s) were the hardest athletes to find in recruiting. I continue to be impressed by NDSU’s results at this position and how it has contributed to the success of the Bison.

National Top 30 DL ranking, including......

6 - Reed Ryan
9 - Will Mostaert
16 - Javier Derritt

Really wishing the Jacks had landed Javier Derritt and Reed Ryan. They are going to be very good. Derritt has huge potential to be one of the best DT's in the MVFC. The Mostaert twins honestly didn't impress me at SDSU's prospect camp last summer. They played a little stiff and didn't test great. As you said, NDSU has a good track record of landing high quality DEs. I'm sure they will be fine but I certainly prefer the other two.

They are the prohibitive favorite in the largest class in Indiana, and he's one of 3 players from this team considered finalists for Mr. Football. The other two are Jeff George's son and a wide receiver that has offers from all the top B1G schools. He set and later broke his own school record for yards rushing in a game. Last week he had like 370 yards in the first half against the #2 team from Kentucky. He had 4 carries in the third quarter to get over 400. He's only 5' 6" but he's very strong and fast. He could be a beast at SIU.

You might be showing us a good example of the subjective nature of this recruiting stuff. Romeir Elliott could be a very productive player for Southern Illinois, perhaps similar to Jalen Bussey (5’ 8” ish) for NDSU. Alot of what HERO is doing is based on the player’s cumulative rating by the recruiting services, and also what school’s have offered. 247 doesn’t show any offers for Elliot, so perhaps that was what kept him off the list.

https://247sports.com/Player/Romeir-Elliott-46049377/

Elliott could also be someone who does so well his senior season that his personal ranking is lifted.

Totally agree that players are ranked by how many offers they have and what schools have offered. I'm pretty sure if a kid holds a UN_ offer their stock plummets. Kidding aside I don't know how else anyone could do it. How many kids get offers just from FCS schools every year? How are you supposed to watch every single kids tape, compare level of play or opponents, etc across the entire nation. It's virtually impossible.

This is definitely true. Alabama isn't getting 4 and 5 star kids to go there. Kids are getting 4 and 5 star ratings because they are being recruited by Alabama. I think it was Mike Golic who said his son was a 4 star recruit and then committed to ND. There was a recruiting academy set up by one of the rating services and he chose not to attend because he already knew where he was going. After the event he was listed as a 3 star recruit. He hadn't played a down of football but his stock went down only likely due to his lack of attendance. IOW...don't take the ratings or these rankings too seriously. Even if they paint the Bison in a positive light.

He sounds very committed to SDSU on his tweets.
If it were me, I would be doing the same thing - since I (he) was not getting FBS offers, then take the best FCS offer and commit. Then, if a FBS offer shows up, even if it is a PWO, then you have options. It’s very common for FCS commits to flip to FBS.

Seeing more and more of this for them. It would seem that they are targeting more highly sought after players in the same way NDSU has been. I don't follow their recruiting enough to know how many they are winning or any of that but it would seem it's another example of how their program is trending in a general positive direction. Which I would say can't be argued with their relative success the last few years.

Yes on the SDSU recruiting looking better, or as Bisonville has said in the past, you know you are recruiting the right players when some get poached by the FBS schools.

Speaking of which, the change at Kansas and soon at Kansas State are interesting......

With the change at Kansas and Kansas State am keeping my fingers crossed on Bison commit Javier Derritt......
signing day can’t get here fast enough!

Seeing more and more of this for them. It would seem that they are targeting more highly sought after players in the same way NDSU has been. I don't follow their recruiting enough to know how many they are winning or any of that but it would seem it's another example of how their program is trending in a general positive direction. Which I would say can't be argued with their relative success the last few years.SDSU is doing all the right things in recruiting especially hitting Nebraska hard when the Bison stopped and pulled out...it's still a mystery to me considering all the success the Bison have had from there. Cue the "Nebraska has been down in talent for several years now".

Fighting Hawks lose a Nebraska recruit, Darius Luff (Lincoln) to Indiana. The Hoosiers offer was for track, Luff being a state champ in hurdles.
