View Full Version : 2017 Game 3: Robert Morris

Things to know:

1. It's pronounced like the English would say "Robert Maurice"
2. That's all I've got

YSU v Robert Morris was one of the games I was switching between. Whenever I tuned in, YSU was inside the Robert Morris 20 and every play was YSU's QB tripping his own RB or their OL executing flawless chopblocks.

Based on the box score YSU dominated them but couldn't translate it to points. I'd expect the margin of victory in this next game to be closer to the 65 points in the MVSU game than the 27 points in the EWU game.

according to the Nick Deluca thread, it's meniscus damage; severity , apparently, is not being shared with the public.

Saw him in Cheney, and my gut tells me he will be back this year, probably after we are done with the "soft" games.

I agree. He warmed up in Cheney; no way they let him do that if there was risk of further damage. We don't "need" him until after ISUb, but for his sake I hope he makes it back ASAP.

As for Robert Morris: I had looked up some stats at one point, can't find the exact numbers now. Their defense actually had decent rushing and total yards numbers, but I think their offense may have been worse than MVSU. We should have the startes out by the middle of the second quarter.

YSU didn't punt the whole game. I think the final score wasn't indicative of how much they dominated. Just seemed like YSU had problems finishing drives (which we saw them do firsthand several times in Fargo last year). Here was their drive summary:

Drive 1: 8 plays 64 yards - 23 yard FG
Drive 2: 7 plays 10 yards - 30 yard FG (set up by a RMU fumble)
Drive 3: 11 plays 80 yards - TD
Drive 4: 6 plays 36 yards - Fumble (botched snap in RMU territory)
Drive 5: 7 plays 47 yards - Missed 56 yard FG (end of half)
Drive 6: 12 plays 45 yards - 27 yard FG
Drive 7: 10 plays 72 yards - TD
Drive 8: 11 plays 77 yards - TD

Looking at their roster, they appear to have some size on the lines. I'm a bit leery though that it isn't the good kind of size.

Can you provide any insight on Robert Morris?

I won't provide a history of the young program.
But as for the 2017 Colonials, they have finally found their QB after 3 years of going through multiple QBs during the season. Jimmy Walker is a gun-slinger who transferred to RMU from San Diego St.
Yes, their OL is very very young. They have 4 true Fr. listed as starters and a RS Fr. So really that is 5 new faces only making their 4 college football appearance.
They have 3 very good TEs. Reggie Green is a transfer from Pitt but their big target is So. Matt Gonzalez. They will split him out to create match-up advantages for him. Dalton Elliott will also see time in their 2 or 3 TE sets.
RMU has 3 RBs they can use but it will start with RS Fr. Harrison Dreher who had made 84 yds on 19 carries vs YSU in his 1st start.

RMU will do WR by community. They spread the ball around to everyone. I personally feel the lack of a true #1 WR can hurt this team in the long run.

Mike Miller is the OC who spent several years on the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals.

The strength of RMU for years has always been their D. They will play a 3-4 and 4-3 through the game. Expect more 4-3 in hopes of slowing down the run. Their DL is a little young but skilled. Their ILBs are very good and their OLB, Gerald Ferguson is opening eyes with scouts with his play so far in 2017 but the experience in the secondary is their strength.

RMU does have one of the top punt returners in the FCS in Warren Robinson.

We've given up about 0 yards in punt return yards the last year and change... I like to think it's because of our great coverage ability but have to lean towards the fact the ball doesn't go very far.

This year's non-conference schedule has been a bit of yawner. Next year doesn't look much better, Delaware and North Alabama (a D-II team) scheduled so far. I'm sure the politics of it all make it difficult, but surely we can do better than this. I'd rather risk a loss to a good FBS team than play only lower level FCS and D-II teams.

Bison 56 - Robert Morris 10. (Scientifically calculated to the highest degree)

First, NDSU isn't playing a FBS team because our AD doesn't want to schedule them. They're not playing because the FBS teams don't want to play NDSU. I don't understand why many of us fans don't understand this unfortunate fact.

Second, North Alabama will not be a DII next year (http://www.ncaa.com/news/ncaa/article/2016-12-08/north-alabama-sports-move-division-i-fall-2018).

Chuck, EWU, and Iowa tool a toll on the team last year. Thats undeniable.
I am glad they have a easy ooc schedule this year. If JMU gets to coast to a top seed, I am all for doing the same this year.

This is true, and I believe the coaches (or maybe someone from Bison 1660) made this point during the offseason. Personally, I don't care whether our OOC is good or bad since the more important games are the conference and playoff games.

I just get frustrated with the lack of understanding that NDSU doesn't "pick" to play whoever they want. The can play who those who agree to play after they ask.

It's similar to dating. As dudes, we can ask every single "10" woman on Earth, but we're not going to date one of them until they say "yes." Elite P5 teams are "10s" and have little benefit to scheduling NDSU right now. The Bison are too much of a pricey threat to their schedules that need to be pretty much flawless in order to get into the CFP. Can NDSU beat Alabama? Probably not, but why should they pay a big price to take the risk? They have a lot more easier FCS teams to choose from for a game that pretty much becomes a bye week for their starters late in the year.

As I had said, I understand that the politics of it all makes it difficult. But by your own admission, we aren't playing them because the AD doesn't want to play them. So it's not an impossible task to play them, if maybe our AD made an effort at doing so, as you so suggest, and since we have negotiated deals with FBS teams in the past, though admittedly it may be more difficult as of late. Regarding North Alabama, I'm sure they will be vastly improved next year, and present quite a challenge for us, having moved up to D-I and all.

Did we get beaten down from playing Iowa last year? I suspect so. I also suspect that Iowa got beaten down even more, as did the Gophers, Colorado State, Kansas State, and Iowa State before them. I'm not opposed to playing a couple of cupcakes each year, but I also think that the fans deserve to see one non-conference game where we are the supposed "cupcake", or at least a slight underdog, and that means playing an FBS team of a fairly high caliber. Outside of the playoffs, I believe it to be the highlight of the year, especially if we remain at the high caliber of football we are currently at.

But of course, I'm just speaking as a fan, not as a football insider with any particular knowledge on the subject.

I believe you misunderstood my statement about NDSU's AD. Trust me, they're trying. Nobody is saying "yes please" to their requests. Again, NDSU isn't worth an elite P5 school to schedule. Those teams don't want a challenge from any team they pay money to play at home.

I don't understand why you or anyone believes they aren't trying to get a FBS game each year, or at least every other year. I've heard both Jorgensen and Larsen public express their frustrations numerous times over the past few years.

That is what the Athletic department should do. They should call from a number that looks like it is coming from Grand Forks, they would definetaly at least pick up the phone then. :):)

They could say they are a college calling from the "State of North Dakota", then start babbling about hockey sticks and pucks, throw in some you know we had a flood comments, maybe a comment about really loving our nickname. By that time the other AD will have started to tune everything out and be salivating all over their desk and will have the contract in the mail. We could maybe buffalo them or.................... Bison them. It might even be good to target a AD that has had any prior work or connection to the outhouse to the North.

I suspected I might be misunderstanding your post as I read it, although grammatically, it does suggest that both the AD is not wanting to schedule FBS teams, and FBS teams are not wanting to play us.

I tune in once a year from out-of-state for the football games, not for the politics of it all. So forgive me for being a bit out-of-touch on the politics of it all.

Trust me on this, the NDSU Athletic Department would love to have a FBS game every year. That's a lot of money to help their budget.

All true in spirit, CM, but I think it is more accurate to say that NDSU would love to have an FBS game every OTHER year.

To have an FBS each year (if we could even get it) essentially means, of course, an FBS AWAY game every year. NDSU's highest priority, however, is 6 regular season home games, and both ML and CK (and Gene prior) have made no secret of that. With an FBS EVERY year, that would essentially mean the elimination of any FCS home and home deals (because the year of our return trip to an FCS opponent would mean only 5 home games instead of 6). Therefore and theoretically, NDSU would want an FBS game in the years that they hosted the HOME portion of any "home and home" arrangement, or, in practice, every other year.

I know you know this ............... just wanted to clarify for others. :)

Yes, I believe that's the current plan. Until the past few years, NDSU didn't struggle getting a FBS opponent.

2006 - Ball State and Minnesota (five home games)
2007 - Central Michigan and Minnesota (five home games)
2008 - Wyoming (six home games and first year of MVFC play)
2009 - Iowa State (five home games)
2010 - Kansas (six regular season home games)
2011 - Minnesota (six regular season home games)
2012 - Colorado State (six regular season home games)
2013 - Kansas State (six regular season home games)
2014 - Iowa State (six regular season home games including first year home and home games with Weber State [Away] and Montana [Home])
2015 - NONE (six regular season home games including second year home and home games with Weber State [Home] and Montana [Away])
2016 - Iowa (six regular season home games including first year home and home game with Eastern Washington [Home])
2017 - NONE (six regular season home games including second year home and home game with Eastern Washington [Away])
2018 - NONE SCHEDULE YET (six regular season home games so far including first year home and home game with Delaware [Home])
2019 - NONE (six regular season home games including second year home and home game with Delaware [Home] and quasi-home game at Target Field)
2020 - Oregon (at least five regular season home games including four MVFC games and Drake)
2021 - NONE SCHEDULE YET (at least four conference regular season home games)
2022 - Arizona (at least four conference regular season home games)
2023 - NONE SCHEDULE YET (at least four conference regular season home games)
2024 - Colorado (at least four conference regular season home games)

Robert Morris will provide NDSU experience against a 3-4 defense

Bison Head Coach Chris Klieman says there are some good things about playing this game at this time.

"I think the style of play this week will help us because Robert Morris is totally opposite of Eastern Washington. Robert Morris wants to run the football. They're going to get into more what we call conventional formations like we do with a tight end, fullback and defensively they're going to be a three down front which we're seeing more and more in our league so that'll help us prepare for our league as well," said Klieman.

http://www.kfyrtv.com/content/sports/NDSU-hosting-Robert-Morris-446592983.html

I believe Western Illinois is running a 3-4 now, and the Coyotes are using it as part of their defensive package.
