Reminds you of the 49ers fullback does he? :)

He was a great high school athlete: conference champion in the 100 meters (11.6), two-time state wrestling champion, an all-state running back in football, and an all-conference baseball player.

Luepke to me, looks like he has the ability to be great carrying the ball. You know the guy from Southern IL, ya he has that ability and then some.

Coaches are you listening? He your wildcat guy too, #savejabrilsknees.

He can catch too. That Brillo play was a one off. We won’t see that again.

A lot more speed? Hunter sure didnt look slow out there. I would be curious of their 40 times. My guess is they would be closer than you think.

I would guess they are fairly close as well except that Roehl probably wins the footrace as he out ran Gophers DBs and Hunter is maybe one step slower than that. But to be honest for most runs it doesn't matter as DJ Mcnorton was not fast at all.

Too bad you were not paying attention to Luepke’s performance last season.
Very impressive. Impressive enough to be named to this spring’s Pre-Season All-MVFC Team.
As. A. Sophomore.

Too bad you were not paying attention to Luepke’s performance against Central Arkansas.
Very impressive. Some of us think he has NFL potential......

He landed hard on that bad shoulder stretching for the goal line too. Hopefully he's ok. Different offense when we have him as an option.

“Whenever his time is up” … interesting phrasing and perhaps nod to #5?

#44 reminds me of a big boulder rolling down an alpine mountain. The few little trees that happen to be in the way get leveled.

I wouldn’t be shocked if P5 teams cone in hard after #44 in the TP, same with #26 up north. The TP will change everything at the G5 and FCS level. Fortunately I think Entz gets that.

Emory’s relationship with NDSU seems to have improved, at least based on recent interviews on Bison 1660.

I hear what you are saying, but he would have to be in the transfer portal first for them to come hard after him. I’m sure you probably know this but feel compelled to state such.

Yep, on the front of things anyway.

He sure is fun to watch when he gets up a head of steam. A boulder rolling downhill is the best analogy I can find, although a freight train is a good one too.

I chalked up the "whenever his time his up" to Emory not knowing what year of eligibility he is.

I don't see how it could be construed as having anything to do with the transfer portal.

I only bring the TP up because I'm in a continuous process of bracing myself for the next one. That way you don't get blindsided. That said, I'm hopeful this all settles down soon.

Ya most likely not going to happen. Hunter reminds me of one of my all-time favorites in Roehl who had a great 2007 campaign with 207 carries 1,454 years 6.9 average and 21 TDs. If memory serves me correctly he was dinged up at the end, but Hunter tends to get dinged up as well.

Would I play Hunter at RB vs Drake? No, no I wouldn’t
Would I play him at RB vs A&T? Very limited, 3 Carries
Would I play him vs Arizona? 15-20 Carries, less if possible

One negative that Tyler Roehl had in that great season was that he had no postseason so Hunter would have 7 yards per carry like Roehl and 15 carries per game for 15 games. Is it doable yes, likely no.

Good question. Last I hear Dom and Mike on Tuesday it sounded like no, but it sure sounds like all of this is to keep wear and tear off of him. Translation, to me, is they are a little worried about depth since those young guys aren't proven yet, and Williams is truly hurt.

I'd be shocked if he got into the top 5 honestly. Even moreso than the Heisman it's been a QB only award lately. Pretty sure the last non-QB to win it was Cooper Kupp in 2015 and the last RB was Terrance West in 2013. Add to that the fact that Hunter probably won't get the carries to put up the eye popping numbers an RB would need to be a serious contender. But, like you said, I'm sure he doesn't really care since that's not something any Bison RB can realistically expect and I'm guessing as a senior he's more focused on keeping the championship train rolling.

Luepke ought to just take the award. Its not like anyone is able to stop him. In fact, he should carry it in his free hand while he's trucking defenders on his way to the endzone.

Same reason Missouri St will only get so far this season and into the playoffs. Their lines are definitely the weakness of teams built by the transfer portal. Championships are won with the big men, not skill positions!

Yep, take it easy on the big guy, we’re going to need him the next two games. Especially concerning the ribs issue and his foot/ankle they were looking at. Win out and we get an extra week off before the playoffs start which is huge with how banged up we are.

If anything let some others get some reps and wear down the WIU defense and if we’re concerned with getting Luepke reps let it come around halftime when the D is already a little worn down. This WIU team is B.A.D.

Yeah this is a huge bummer for us fans and more importantly Hunter himself. Sounds like he will have to miss the Senior Bowl which is unfortunate as many of the NDSU players have really shined there in the past to get combine invites and their draft stock rising. Hopefully he gets a combine invite regardless but I have no idea what his recovery timetable is and if he would be available for that since the Senior Bowl is beginning of February and the Combine is end of February to early March. Maybe since the combine is no or minimal contact he could participate in many of the underwear olympics. I would LOVE to have him back next year for his available COVID year but does he want another year of college snaps on his body? I'd imagine he knew this was a possibility on Senior Day when he walked and he will probably do whatever he can for scouts for the draft this coming Spring.

Thankfully I think the hype train for him had already left the station at the end of last year and continued to build steam early this year. Also hoping that a shoulder injury is less impactful for his career than the usual hindrances like knees, ankles, concussions, etc.

Best of luck to him as he will be leave a legendary Bison no matter what he chooses.

As for this year? Next man up. Would be a HELLUVA statement to win the natty without our NFL draft caliber FB and TE for much of the year. Not to mention our starting all conference caliber Center, RT, and All American DT....etc.

Yep, Luepke is the 5th offensive starter from the season opener vs Drake who has left the team or had a season ending injury. I don't think the 2021 team gets by JMU in the semis without Luepke... we'll see if the 2022 team can get it done without him.

As I've been able to work all levels of high school and small college I through scrimmages at schools like Notre Dame, Purdue, and Louisville, the biggest difference I've noticed is the OL and DL. The difference is there at the skill positions, but it's not as significant. The OL and DL are a huge reason for the Bison success three past 12 years. The success of those linemen in the NFL supports that.

Hunter has had durability issues during his time at NDSU, at least during the time that he was getting the most repetitions. He was hurt a fair amount of time in both the 2021 and 2022 seasons. It reminds me of when James Robinson went undrafted. He was a Rd3-4 talent in testing and tape and yet everyone passed on him. NFL teams are just baffling sometimes. Hunter Luepke is an UFDA and then some, that's for sure. I hope he becomes the next Moose Johnston, and the Moose can help mentor him in Dallas. He along with the KState running back should be fun to follow, The Modern Day Moose (aka Moose Luepke aka Bison Hunter Luepke aka Bison Luepke,) and The Dallas Deuce!! IMO, Hunter wasn’t a FB at NDSU, and he won’t be one in the NFL. He’s an RB, you put him back there and give him the ball. He a Derrick Henry type of Runner. Yes, he can block, and he can catch the ball out of the backfield, but he doesn’t belong in a FB box. He’s a power feature back.

Use the fullback
It’s a dying position in the NFL, but the Cowboys likely didn’t sign UDFA Hunter Luepke to fill the traditional fullback role. They are probably eyeing him as the short yardage specialist as well as a lead blocker, and his skill set seems to make it possible for him to play as a traditional running back as well. He has the best shot of any undrafted player to make the roster, and while he may be used sparingly, he could be very effective when he is deployed.

Well, let’s go
Forgive me, for I have punned. OT Matt Waletzko (UND) was injured in camp last year, and was only active for three games. The staff seems high on him to emerge as the new swing tackle this year, allowing Tyler Smith to stay at LG all season to maintain continuity. The real pipe dream is for him to become Tyron Smith’s replacement going forward. The staff has also been experimenting with him as LG in OTAs. We know they love them some position flexibility. It’s a lot to hope for, but hey, that’s what this whole article is about. The offensive line remains a complex puzzle for the Cowboys, and it would be excellent for one solution to already be on the roster.

His 2nd carry would've also been a good one. 3rd string center let pentetration

Dallas O.Lne backups very thin..too many projects yet to develop
But that is the NFL in general.

I read that they were going to give Luepke a lot of reps tonight since so much focus has been given to Vaughn. I’m sure it’s because they need to make some decisions in the coming days. So far that has been true. He’s held his own but no breakout play yet. Between him and Lance I’ve never heard NDSU mentioned so many times in a Pro game.

I think they were hoping to be able to keep him on the practice squad but after yesterday I think he’ll make a roster somewhere. If the cowboys want him they’ll need to roster him. And it sounds like they want him.

He can do anything a 3rd string running back, 3rd string TE or starting fullback can do. That frees your roster up a lot.

Isn't that kind of Kyle Shanahan's thing in SF? have guys who are versatile? Would be kind of funny if the 9ers picked him up assuming he doesn't get rostered.

Not to Lakes kiss of death him, but they gotta be keeping him. You don’t give him and Malik the ball that much and then cut both. Especially not Luepke when he shows that much flash as a rookie big back. He’s just so versatile and the cowboys have been saying it’s going to be hard to get to 53. Keeping one guy that can back up 2 positions and start at FB plugs a lot of holes you now don’t have to spend a spot on.

Hate to hear that about Jabril. Hope that he lands well.

Hat’s off to Hunter, and may he have a great rookie year free of serious injuries and make Mike McCarthy a happy camper. Hoping for Trey to greatly benefit from a new vantage point. May he come along at a smart and sensible pace and may Dak decide to take him under his wing like he did Will Grier.

Hunter is on the Cowboys!

Found this older article (May) regarding Hunter and the Dallas UDFA class. Along with a new article talking about the way Hunter and another player are feeling now that they have made the roster. Huge hurdle handled today re the 53 man roster that has a lot of fans sharing your excitement Chapo, and feeling pretty darned good about a great young man and Bison product. In this time of negatives and kick in the stomach news, this kind of feel good story is just plain outstanding! (Might just make an excellent movie) His skill set, moxie, smarts, and work ethic should continue to serve him well. Here’s to Hunter and his family, extended Bison family, and fans! Long may he run!!

Bill Bates wore number 40 from 1983 to 1997 as a safety for the Cowboys. Similar to Hunter, he consistently demonstrated hard work, attitude, toughness, hustle, humility and many other traits that coaches and teammates love to see. Can’t believe it is four decades now since he started his career.
