Good for him man. Really good coach. Only a matter of time. Big loss for Summit conference if he gets the job.

Interesting to see they are going after two former Miles assistants, Medved was also with Tim at CSU before he took the head job at Furman.

Sounds like it's Smith's job if he wants it. Has a nice group coming back to USD or can take on the challenge at Drake and make some more cash.

Drake was paying Ray Giac $400k a year, hard to say no to doubling your salary.

I've also heard that Miami(OH) was pursuing him but I doubt they pay what Drake pays.

He took the gig per Gary sharpe at 1620

Former Nebraska assistant and current South Dakota coach Craig Smith has accepted the job at Drake.

Blow to the Yotes, Craig was doing a great job there. Do the yotes turn to one of the assistants or look elsewhere?

Did they even have a top assistant? Seems like Austin Hansen has the most experience but he has some huge SDSU connections.

He played there and was the assistant that helped land Nate Wolters. No head coaching experience though, I think they look elsewhere.

Sharpe now reporting he's staying.

Don't know how financially they did it, but in the last few hours South Dakota put together a significant deal to sway Craig Smith to stay.

Wonder what he is getting...It has to be a pretty healthy raise.

Mad props USD.

Teams that are committed to a sport figure out a way to raise money. See UNI whose booster club pays their mens coach with private funds so he makes almost a million bucks.

Contenders put their money where there mouth is. Pretenders lose their head coaches regularly to other mid major schools.

Would twice in the past 10 years be considered "regularly"?

Yes.

USD just sent a very, very promising signal to the rest of the Summit: Get on board with basketball.

Umpired baseball today at Yankton, SD.......USD club baseball team vs. MSUM club team....... When I posed the question of how USD kept Smith from bolting to Drake to the USD players, their response was $100,000 raise tacked on to his existing $195,000 contract......... Nice cost of living raise.

Edit: Oops, sorry ! per JK; Smith only got an 80 K bump.
