Encouraging signs from Eagles Training Camp via Bleeding Green Nation regarding C.J. making the 53-man roster

"McKelvin and Carroll are the starters with Brooks playing in the slot. Mills has been quiet since having a strong start to camp. Rowe has been up and down but should make the team. Smith has stood out, especially relative to being a UDFA from Division I FCS North Dakota State. The Eagles gave Smith some first team reps against the Colts. He's earned praise from Malcolm Jenkins. Philadelphia seems to like him. Aaron Grymes misses the cut here due to his shoulder.

In the near future it is very possible one NFL team could have two starters from NDSU that graduated the same year, one on defense and the other on offense. Just think about that for a moment.

Eagles cut another CB tonight, they are at 74 players now, 21 more to go !! He can do it If Eagles really like he will make 53 man roster, which sounds like Eagles like him alot.. Before practice squad he would have to put on waivers and pretty sure some other team would pick him up pretty quickly..

Jacorey shephard being cut is huge for smith's chance of making the roster. Shephard was the last major competition that smith had. Now it is only a matter of how many corners philly is comfortable keeping.

117K is great work if you can get it. I think you can be on the PC for what 3 years? Plus you can work the other 35 weeks to pay the bills. He could parlay those 3 years and 300K in to a good future.

Where the big benefits kick in is when you make 3 years. Pension for age 55. $201,453 annually at age 65 or $76,920 annually at age 55.

Then you get a decent sized annuity when you make 4 years that you can collect at 35. (or 5 years out of league) it's between 500k and 800k, not including interest

Unfortunately practice squad doesn't count. Need 3 games on IR, PUP, or active roster to count as a year. John Crockett now has 2 years being on the IR. Next year is huge for him and his long term financial earnings

Philly's initial 53 man roster had 11 O-lineman: http://www.csnphilly.com/philadelphia-eagles/eagles-53-man-roster-breakdown

Of course Lane Johnson is in there and he may be suspended but with 12 O-lineman now on their active roster you'd think they'd seriously consider cutting one which would open the door for CJ. I think the Vikings have only 9 O-lineman on their active roster.

Philly already in talks with other teams regarding trade of o-lineman acquired from New England. It seems they are looking to regain a few more draft picks as they added another as part of the trade with New England, another conditional 4th rounder (could improve to 3rd rounder).

Also clears another $3.9M in Rowe's cap space for 2016 through 2018.

Why would you not sign one to the practice squad and have someone on the roster that could play special teams? Whether that's CJ or someone else getting the last spot, it should be a position player that can play special teams.

That trade that sent Rowe to the Patriots is odd. Initially, it showed the trade included the o-linemen Cline, put New England's transactions show that he was just released and not traded and the Eagle's news on the trade just list the 4th round conditional draft choice.

He had a good diving leg tackle where he tripped up the ball carrier. There was also a play where Sproles was drilled by a defender before catching a punt. CJ covered up the ball on that play. It won't go into the stat book because it was a penalty instead of a fumble, but it was still a heads up play that showed hustle in CJ's part.

I didn't see that play, but maybe it balanced the one in the first half where he ran into Sproles, who was catching a punt. Sproles came up from the turf holding his knee, in pain. Luckily, he was able to walk it off.

From today's practice:

• C.J. Smith had a real nice leaping pick on a jump ball pass intended to David Watford. Matt McGloin’s pass hung up in the air too long and Smith took advantage by leaping into the air and coming down with the ball. The feeling here is Smith could potentially be starting at outside corner at some point.

I was at the Eagles practice today and not once did Carson even attempt to throw to CJ's side of the field. The only one that might have come close was the very first play of 7 on 7 where Carson dropped it in on a deep post to Ertz (I think). I don't think any of the 3 QB's threw his way either.

"C.J. Smith is on his way to becoming a starting cornerback for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz preaches consistency from his young cornerbacks will earn them regular playing time. Smith has been the most consistent of the bunch, not getting beat by the deep pass on a regular basis.

A big difference from Smith's rookie season, when the undrafted free agent rookie from North Dakota State was trying to get his feet wet in the NFL.

"It has slowed down for him a little bit compared to last year at this time," Schwartz said. "Last year at this time his head was swimming. He was coming from North Dakota State and everything was new to him. Now he's been able to work more on technique. He's been able to win match-ups and things like that. He's an improved player from year one to year two, and I think that's the sign that he's on the right track." "

The media is pretty subjective when labeling someone as a small school athlete. For example, I've watched quite a few ESPN analysts/commentators talk a lot about how big of a blow it is for the New England Patriots to lose their first pick (some get mixed up and say first round pick instead of 3rd round) of the 2017 Draft, Derek Rivers, to an ACL injury. They never mention him as a small school athlete and rarely talk about him being from Youngstown State, just that he was New England's first pick.

Smith was once known as the other guy the Eagles got from North Dakota State. But in his year-plus with the team, Smith has really come along. He started 2016 on the practice squad but was added to the active roster in October. He got just one defensive snap in 2016 but did play on special teams.

He was having a really solid camp before the Darby move. There even seemed to be a possibility he would beat out Robinson to earn a starting job on the outside. But now he's fighting for a roster spot.

Looks CJ was traded to Seattle for a conditional 7th rounder in 2020. After the defensive purge in Seattle I would think he has a good change to make the team.

Wow. Pretty odd to be traded when you were on the practice squad in Cleveland. Seattle couldn't have given up less, but they must see something they like. They could have just signed him to the active roster last season from Clevelands practice squad. Now they gave up a pick. Hmm.... interesting. Great spot for CJ. Seattle is in a complete rebuild on defense.

CJ was on Cleveland's active roster. He played on special teams in several games.

Gotcha. I didn't realize he was activated off the practice squad. Looks like he was active the last three games.

That Elway guy is starting to get “it.” Perhaps he'll develop a team that can win a Super Bowl or something one of these days.

Welcome to Mile High. I think this could be a great move for CJ.
