Well, it's officially game week; and the annual pilgrimage to our home away from home will begin soon. So let's share our stories and photos of the journey. Very sad they weren't scheduled on Saturday night. I'd love nothing more than watching NDSU in afternoon and Vikings at night. Now we turn a 15 hour drive into 18.5 hours. Oh well...

I can report that our local weather in NE Kansas shows that it will start raining tomorrow through Friday but the daytime temps will be in the 40's. Overnight will get down towards freezing but they treat the roads pretty heavily here.

NDSU bookstore sent a pickup and trailer, loaded to the max, driven by 2 ladies south. The were hoping to get to Topeka. They had a flat tire on the trailer, on I-29 just south of Sioux City. Some friends of ours, 2 hours ahead of us stopped and helped them. After unloading some of the boxes they found the spare for the trailer. But the PU jack couldnt lift the trailer. They did get it changed by calling a wrecker. I just hope the ladies got to Topeka? Good Job by the 2 Langdonites for the helping hand! Upper midwest people are still the best!!!

Our first trip, leaving Grand Forks 6:30 Thursday morning, picking up my son and a friend in Fargo. We're staying in Wichita Thursday night, starting early Friday morning.

We're planning to drive all the way home on Sunday. Not looking forward to that, but I'm pretty sure it will be worth it.

We're meeting college buddies down there who are on year #3 - and made hotel reservations near the stadium when they checked out last year.

This will be the fifth year driving for my Dad and I. The first year we left at midnight Thursday and drove straight through to Frisco, stayed Friday and Saturday night in Lewisville and drove straight home on Sunday. Had a pit stop in OKC when the power steering pump went out so we didn't arrive in Fargo until about 3am. Our friend and her son and had work/school that day as well, must've been rough. That trip was long and grueling and we said we'd never do the driving straight through thing ever again. Every year since we've stopped in Topeka on Thursday, stayed in Lewisville Friday and bailed after the game and stayed in OKC Saturday with Omaha on Sunday. Really breaks the trip up nicely and the longest day in the car is like 8-9 hours.....which is nothing when you've done 18 straight before. We would enjoy flying I'm sure, but there are pro's and cons to each way you travel. For example, when we went from Ames to Ogden last year, we hit up a ton of things along the way which wouldn't have been possible had we flown. And the money we save, without having a clue about travel hacking, is something we consider as well. We bring coolers full of food (we were the talk of the train to Spokane in 2010 with our food spread), split up gas between four of us, and get discounted rooms with a hook up from my dad. The drive for 5 is a literal expression with us, haha.

RVs are not the most economical way to travel, but you put six people in one and split the gas that many ways and it gets quite a bit cheaper.

Plus if you do drive straight through (we aren't this year) everyone can get a shower on the run... :)

But it is going against Iowa DOT requests and SD has been trying to prevent them from catching South Dakotans and fining them, Sioux City has found a way around the SD requirements for accessing their DOT information for tickets. IMO if you get one just rip it up. If you get pulled over in the future in Iowa and they arrest on a warrant for unpaid speeding ticket you claim you never received it, have a hard time thinking that they have much jurisdiction to go outside of Sioux City and even Iowa itself much less North Dakota for a simple "automated" speeding ticket.

Agreed, but for many who are not "use" to it and realize they have to go from nearly 80 down to 55 or at least 56 or something are going to have an issue.

The cruddy deal of it is coming from SD where speed limit is 75 (or is it 80) down to 55 and remembering to slow down quick enough. I warned my wife like 5 times the last time we went through and she still had "trouble" getting it down even though I told her be going 55 when you hit the bridge as we have no idea where the camera would be at.

Juat passed through Brookings. Traffic moving between 25-40 mph. Fog and tons of ice have put at least a dozens cars and semis in the ditch within 15 miles of Brookings. I've heard it gets better south of here but drive careful if in the Watertown-Brookings area right now.

I would second that. I just drove from Maple Grove to Mounds View to work with no delays at all. Supposed to be warm today, so any last snow and the roads should melt away quickly.

Talked to a delta pilot. He said wet heavy snow is the issue. Uses substantially more de icing fluid than would be typically expected in mid January as it is a frost/ice build up, versus inches of snow.

I read each airline has their own ground operations vendor. The one used by Delta and United ran out. The others did not. You'd think they could have helped each other but maybe they only had enough for their schedule flights.

Likely someone didn't start up the driving truck really enough they have to warm that stuff up before they spray it on. Not sure how long that takes. Still pretty ridiculous. Have to say even the weather people were a bit off guard by this mini snow storm. Yesterday on the way to work went from nothing to about 10 inches back to like 1-2 inches. In a span of 40 miles.

Can you imagine what it must be like to be the airline gate agent who has to make the announcement about the cancelled flights?

First of all, the agent is probably a Bison fan, so they truly feel for you.

Second, now they have to deal with all you frustrated Bison fans with entitlement issues, some of whom are probably already drinking.

The bean-counters in the airline industry have brought so much "risk" into travel by cutting corners like not stocking enough de-icing fluid.

I remember getting caught in a situation like this where an airport closed. They put us all on buses to a major airport several hours away. Not sure that will help with so many of you missing flights and still needing to go to DFW. Hopefully, some cancellations elsewhere in the system will free up some aircraft that can be used to service you.

Not sure anyone has noticed but read an article about how airlines are doing quite well financially. Some of this is drop in fuel prices and they're charging for luggage and extra snacks etc. Thing I've noticed is you hear about a lot of vouchers being given out again in the last couple of years. Some are almost as good as the heydays of late 90s early 00s. So that they'd skimp on costs for something that is almost certain to be needed in a cold weather climate such as Fargo is stupidity at its best.

Another thing why are they still using the short timeframe deicer when there is stuff out there that will last up to 40-60 minutes. Think they have some now that will last a few hours. Seems on news yesterday that this was one of the problems is they couldn't get the plane in the air fast enough so would have to redo it... Realize some of the timing depends on destination but come on take you more than 10 or so minutes to get in the air? Not like there are planes coming in every 30 secs and taking off every 30 secs.

A friend of mine in Syracuse is on the national board for Pop Warner Football and they got to take one of their champs to the White House. This was my first trip to Frisco, and it was a blast! I'm sure this is nothing new to a lot of you who have done it before, but it was a new experience for our group. A friend that rode with us brought some terrific decals for our van, and it was so much fun to throw the horns at folks along the way. The nice lady at the toll booth wished us a good game - and another one on the way home congratulated us. We didn't stop at a single gas station that didn't have at least a few Bison. It was a thrill to be part of it.

I'm sure the ride home would have felt a lot longer if we had lost; as it was, we spent a few hours reliving great plays, and all day basking in the glow!

We'll go back, and we'll drive again.
