A lot of NDSU names on there but one I'm really surprised not to see is Brian Schaetz. Pretty big snub IMO.

Congrats to all!
Agree, Schaetz and Tanguay have been a force.
Was surprised to see King Frazier on the 2nd team.
Nice to see Zach Johnson rebound to this level after his injuries.
Love Menard's pass-rushing skills & how they have developed
over his first season playing full-time. Can't wait to see him
get after Gustafson. :)

I am curious as to why people think Schaetz and Tanguay (especially Tanguay) were snubbed. Our run defense was not particularly special and neither are their numbers. I don't know how their numbers compare to other DT duos in conference, but it seemed like the Perry, Drevlow, Lueke combo was more consistently disruptive. I'm not saying their play hasn't been good but has it been all-conference?

That is a pretty historic defensive unit you are making a comparison to.....:)

I'll leave the deep-dive #s to the #s people, so here is what I would say off
the top of my head without looking up #s.
How did that 1st team RB Nico Watson do against the Bison?
Did not play Coprich. The 2nd team RB, Jody Webb,
had a good day against NDSU, but my memory of that was
more of the damage was done outside the OT's. And, again, OTTOMH,
that was the Bison's biggest weakness, outside runs, especially off the
QB read-option. QB runs being the most damaging. So the running
plays were not aimed at Schaetz & Tanguay. Tanguay was honorable
mention All-Conference and I think Schaetz should have been at least that as well, especially with him being a senior.

Personally, I thought Schaetz deserved mention over Tanguay. Mostly because Schaetz had 7.5 TFLs and 3.5 sacks which is pretty good for an interior defensive lineman.

As far as the overall defense they did still finish 1st in the conference in rush yards allowed per game (2nd behind UNI if you include only conference games). I'm sure it's not broken down anywhere but I bet if you looked at opponents ypc inside the tackles compared to outside it would be an eye popping difference. Teams did not between the tackles well on the Bison all year primarily because those two DTs were incredibly solid.

Wow, your comparison is to what some people believe is the best defense in FCS history.
I don't know what the numbers are compared to other teams this year but there's no way we should be basing ones ac status to teams/players from past years.

Schaetz seemed to consistently make some plays each game. I'm not saying they don't deserve I just wanted to read people's reasons. I forget who selects this. Is it coaches...media?

I would rank them all conference based on comparing to other conference DTs but yes I do compare our guys to the previous D and the bar was definitely set high. I hope to see that kind of defense again

It's only media I believe. I know Izzo voted in it but he wasn't allowed to select any NDSU players. I'm assuming Kolpack voted in it as well under the same restrictions.

I know those guys care about their work and I think they do a good job but it would be interesting to see one put together by MVC coaches.

Turns out I was wrong and coaches do vote for these teams along with media. Klieman mentioned in his presser on Monday that he got a vote but couldn't vote for any of his own players. I agree though that it would be interesting to see a media team and a coaches team. I have a feeling the DTs like Schaetz and Tanguay would get a lot more credit from the opposing coaches who better understand how those guys impact a game beyond the stat sheet than they would from the media.
