2:00 pm CST tipoff on ESPN3. Game being played in Springfield and not Champaign since their arena is apparently being renovated. Illinois lost to North Florida on Friday night. They also lost their starting point guard in that game with a dislocated finger.

They play 4 guards and a center the whole game, yes Thorne Jr. at 6'11" 270 is a load but North Florida played a 7 man rotation and the two biggest guys they had on the floor were 6'8". If we can contain him, most of Illinois scoring came from 2 other players and they don't impose a huge size difference matchup anywhere else like a lot of high major teams we play do. I think this team proved they won't be intimidated by size when they battled against Gonzaga and their front of Wiltjer 6'10", Sabonis 6'11" and Karnowski 7'1". If Dex can have a game remotely close to the one he played against them we'll give ourselves a chance in this one.

AWFUL second half on both ends of the court. Frustrating. Didn't even try stop the momentum with timeouts or adjustments. Hopefull players and coaches learned a few things today.

AJ looks like he lost all confidence...he should be one that takes over games especially in crucial times, just stop and pop a 3 once in while, that is all it would take and he has the talent for it but it seems he doesn't want to be that guy...that's where LA made the huge difference last year.

Just my thoughts...

1 - Way to dependant on 3 ball. A said, it's "fools gold". We looked great in the first half mainly because the 3s were dropping, which everyone should know isn't going to last. We hit one right away in the second half, and all of a sudden we couldn't hit. Guys quit shooting and we turned the ball over way too much and got sloppy.
2 - Kading coming back will help, but this team desperately needs Miller or Eliason to step up and be a a contributing role player. I think this will be the most important thing in this team rounding up and taking that next step. I know we were down Kading, but Werner was absolutely GASSED with about 7 minutes left in the first half, and he never was the same impacting player.
3 - Dupree is a real nice player I like him. He is not a facilitating PG though, IMHO. He'll have to play some, but the development of Khy will move him to a role that mre fits him, where he can score off the ball and slash which is what he does best.
4 - Khy shoots way too much. Too many 3s. I think he airballed more 3s than he hit the rim or made. I think he'll be a great player at point this year though, which will help Dupree and the team. AS he develops I want him handling the ball more and shooting less.
5 - Without an interior game, it forces our perimeters to handle the ball more, which is a problem IMHO. Last year we had LA handling the bulk of this, now we have all young/inexperienced players having to handle the ball too much, and I think that's what happened the second half.
6 - AJ needs to play better. A LOT better. He needs to step up and be the best player on our offense.
7 - I really like Clements game. He's going to have a nice role this year IMHO.
8 - Paul Miller is a stud. Already. Dude's just a flat out scorer and a real tough matchup for anyone. I don't think anyone in the Summit will be able to guard him.
9 - Love Brown's attitude. He has a great role on this team, but I don't think he's going to see 20+ minutes by the end of the year. He's an out of position player that fouls too much. But we'll need him in his role to be successful IMHO.

I think that's a tough role for a soph. I agree he needs to be playing better, but I don't think I want him trying to do to much. Kids only a soph. The only who did that much as a soph was Woodside, and I think that was an anomaly.

Someone needs to step up other than P. Miller and I think the best player on the team could be AJ and he certainly can fill that role...also refer to #6 in post #73.

Yeah, AJ was a non factor, but also looked like other teammates LOOKED for Paul and not AJ

I wanted to see one of our PG's dribble at AJ's guy and kick it back for an easy 3; especially towards end rather than seeing Khy shoot another airball 3

Yea I was shocked at how little they seemed to value the basketball. You could see they were trying to make things happen, which is a good mental sign as long as it develops over the course of the season, but at some point you need to scale back and have perspective of what's important important.

I think Dex was so tired he couldn't establish anything. He was trying to control the entire interior on the defensive side and grab boards on the right. With about 7 minutes left in the first half he was basically done - that game might have been too much for him, but he needs help too and he didn't have that. The second half he was just trying to get through and stayed out of the offensive end for the most part.

I really like Khy's game. He was shooting too much for my liking, but I could definitely deal with his turnover's when he's riving inside because we need that mentality from him and it will pay off when conference starts.

I look for AJ and Paul Miller to do this. I hope they do it. I am sure Coach Dave is working on what rotations work the best right now. One thing we need to do is drive to the bucket. You get fouled, make the lay up or dish a great pass for the score. We are 13-19 (.684) and the other two teams are 32-58 (.552). Thanks fully the other teams are not shooting a great percentage or we would be 0-2 instead of 1-1 and just short of being 2-0.

There was a moment in the game closer to the end of the first half where the shot clock was running down and they kicked the ball to the top of the key for P. Miller, he looked to shoot, didn't feel he had the shot so he passed it left to AJ. With about 3 seconds on the shot clock AJ drove baseline and missed a running floater (air ball short). The camera was in a perfect spot as they were running back on defense. Had a close up of AJ looking at I'm assuming P. Miller and he said "Just shoot it. Just shoot it." I want AJ to be the Braun/LA type of player with a killer instinct and give me the damn ball attitude, but I'm not sure he wants that or has that drive. I don't care who it is, but someone needs to step up in that role and be "that guy" regardless of ability. I'd rather have a guy want it then be passive.

We had a chance to cut it to a one possession game very late, but both Clements and Kabelis air balled their shots. Not sure those are the guys I want shooting in that situation, esp Khy. At least for now. Hope to see AJ start to get more aggressive and be the guy. Him and P Miller have the potential to be a very dangerous duo.
