New dugouts are being constructed for the softball team's home at NDSU. Hopefully this is just a first step in bringing that field up to date.

Are these going to be ground level or the fancier ones dug into the ground with steps and drains and stuff? I'm not even sure what kind do we have now?

A 3 sided box over the benches with the press box on top of the visitors. So when the visiting team starts pounding on the walls l guess it gets "interesting" upstairs.

That was the old setup. In fact the press box was removed 2 years ago most likely because they thought it might collapse.

Not sure about the new design. Maybe someone should walk by before tailgating starts Saturday.

New dugouts are cinder block style and look a little bigger that the previous ones.Drove by Easter Sunday there is no way they would have been ready for the FHawks game on Wed.

Sweet! Lets get this done and finally make it look like a true division 1 facility! What are the chances they incorporate the dugouts into the grandstand with locker rooms and all like a true ballpark? I just remembered they upgraded the dugouts already didn't they?

I haven't seen any plans. For a non revenue sport like softball, I assume upgrades will be made in phases. I've never been to a game before but I have watched on the web. Do they have restrooms and concessions? I've wanted to make a game or 2 but timing never seems to work out.

Absolutely as long you DONATE the money to finance it. Actually if you listened to the presser with the Coach and the Players I think take it as an advantage
to be traveling and coming back practicing inside and then going back outside to play and compete.
That is my impression anyway.

Go Bison, however I think the OKC coaches will be prepared better for NDSU...

Phase I is on the agenda for approval at the SBHE meeting on June 27th. The estimated cost of Phase I is $380,500, of which $364,500 is from private funds.

From the agenda:

This project constitutes Phase I and will include new ADA compliant grandstands that will also address safety issues such as railings and uneven walking surfaces, a reconfigured backstop to improve spectator safety, a press box for game announcing via radio and television, demolition of the existing concession/restroom building, and relocation of the irrigation pumps to a pump pit. As long as the bidding climate is advantageous, this phase will also include a new scoreboard/sound system.

Future phases will include a visitor’s bullpen, outfield modifications, a new concession/restroom/locker room facility, ticket booth, lighting, material storage area and other site improvements.

I haven't been out there in ages and I'm not familiar with the current setup.. could you explain?

It says they want to demolish the existing concession/restroom building but the new concession/restroom facility is in a future phase. Will there be no concession and restrooms until they move on to future phases?

roadwarrior
06-16-2017, 02:30 PM
The existing concession/restroom building isn't even functional for restrooms. They do use it for a small concession setup. The location makes it necessary to demolish it first.

There is a restroom building a short walk to the NW corner of the outdoor track.

Yep. Softball has arguably been our most successful D1 team.

This would
1) help with attendance. It will never be a revenue sport obviously but some games draw a whopping 50 people and looking at the place I can understand why.

2) Could help a little with recruiting. It's amazing how well we have recruited with D2 facilities. When recruits of other sports see crappy facilities, it just reeks small time. Bad impression.

Phase II of the Softball Complex project includes a new outfield fence, removing the sod and installing turf for the outfield, new bull pens, adding a right field grandstand, new batting cages, and various associated site improvements

I wonder if the right field grand stand will be brand new bleachers or if they will reuse some of the old ones. Either way it will round out the stadium and make it look bigger.

For a team a few years ago that had 50 people per game, this is a good side upgrade. If we were to sell out every seat in the house, we would be top 30 in attendance. Those little bleachers we built would have been enough for most regular season games.

I would rather see us focus on the fan experience first. If we can get close to filling all the seats, success will breed more success and upgrades

I think the field looks great! Some nice finishing touches would be . . . 1) planting some trees around the perimeter area. 2) putting an awning or short partial roof at the top of the grandstand for shade and/or wind block during the April games would give it the stadium a high end look. The chain link fence at the top gives it a low end look. Even covering the chain link fence with something like is used on the outfield wall would be a big improvement.

It would have been really cool to have a mezzanine at the top of the grandstand with concessions, merch, enclosed/box seating area, etc.

That said, great job getting this project done.

As of a couple of weeks ago, we knew. Based on his statements, he was the main donor but not the only one.

The field is slightly larger than before. How much I am not sure. The fence says 200' down the right and left field lines and 218' in center field.

Watched a bit of the Alumni game tonight. What a fantastic venue.

Was anyone able to attend the NDSU vs VC double header yesterday?

I realize its exhibition and technically they do not keep stats.

Ladies won 11-0 & 8-0 in 5 innings. Morgan Olson & Paige Vargas combined for I believe a 4 hitter in the first game. Both looked very good...mind you it was VCSU. second game Paige threw a couple more innings and then KK was lights out for a couple and Cara O'Byrne finished a 2 or 3 hit game for the win. Coach mainly played the freshman and the transfers and they all looked pretty good...Mind you it was VCSU and they were a bit overwhelmed by the 5 in row Summit league champs. For those that haven't seen the new field, It is first class. Bison play MSUM at 4pm this Wed.

Wednesday games cancelled.

And I would suspect not to be rescheduled.

Does Tharaldson Park have locker room facilities for home and away teams?

I think that's included in the plans for an indoor hitting facility but I could be wrong
