Key FCS Games
UNI at NDSU 1:00 p.m. NBC ND, Comcast Chicago, ESPN3, ESPN College Extra- This is always a huge game, after knocking off SDSU on the road the Bison can firmly put themselves in the MVFC drivers seat with a win at the Fargodome against the Panthers. UNI is coming off a tough loss on the road to Illinois State. UNI is still running a two QB offense, that primarily features Aaron Bailey but at times will mix in the passing ability of Sawyer Kollmorgan. Defensively UNI should challenge QB Carson Wentz with a very tough secondary but with Xavier Williams having graduating the Bison OL should have an easier time pass blocking of course opening up holes for the Bison running backs.
Furman at Chattanooga noon ESPN3- This is a massive game in the SoCon, Chattanooga is the preseason favorite while Furman looks to have risen as the biggest threat to knock the Mocs off. I wouldn't go as far as to say this could decide who wins the conference but if Chatty can get a win here they will be firmly in the drivers seat.
Indiana State at SDSU 6:00 p.m. Midco, ESPN3, ESPN College Extra- This is a key game for SDSU, after a big letdown against NDSU they cannot afford to turn one loss into two. Indiana State is also gathering some steam, fresh off of delivering a 56-28 beatdown to Missouri State. QB Matt Adam was a very crisp 27/38 for 265 yards and 4 TDS against the Bears. The Sycamores also rushed for over 280 yards. This is a game that will certainly test the resolve of the Jacks after being battered by the Bison.
Southeastern Louisiana at McNeese State 6:00 p.m. ESPN3- Big game in the SLC, this is McNeese State's first big challenge of the year. The Cowboys have gone 4-0 against a lackluster group of opponents, one of which being non-DI Mississippi College. Meanwhile SLU is fresh off picking up a big home win against Lamar. Whoever wins this game will be looking very solid in what is a down SLC this year.
FCS Game of the Week
Illinois State at YSU 5:00 p.m. ESPN3, ESPN College Extra- The time has finally come to see if Bo Pelini and his Penguins are for real. Since playing a competitive game in its season opener against Pitt, YSU has gone 3-0 against RMU, St Francis and USD...not exactly a murders row of opponents and it took OT to get past RMU. The Penguins have embraced running the football, both Martin Ruiz and Jody Webb are solid backs, together they have combined to average over 165 yards per game on the ground.
Of course ISUR will counter with one of the MVFC running backs in Marshaun Coprich. With QB Tre Roberson still on the mend with a thumb injury, look for ISUR to feed the ball to Coprich often this Saturday. This game will come down to rush defense, ISUR did a get job of bottling up UNI this past Saturday and if they can do the same to Ruiz and Webb I would look for them to come out with a victory at the Ice Palace even without Tre Roberson.
