Nick Mertens

I have a friend who followed him through high school at East Grand Forks and he hasn't heard much about him lately. Does anybody know how Nick is doing with the Bison and what the coaching staff has in store with him in the future. Will he be a future QB for the Bison or maybe switch him to a different position? Any information on how he's doing with the Bison would be great. Thanks

Nick red-shirted last year so he's a freshman now and will is definitely stay at QB. Steve Walker, a junior, will probably be the starter for as long as we can keep him healthy.

With Walker out of spring ball, none of the other QBs looked very good - and that's kind of scary considering that NDSU's corners were pretty much all new. On the plus side, Mertens threw two TD passes in the spring game and obviously a lot can change once guys start getting more reps. We'll have a better idea how Mertens is coming along by the end of fall camp.

One more thing: NDSU didn't sign any QBs last year and only have four QBs on the roster - that could mean that they see some potential in the guys they have now (Mertens, Parsons, and Brecke).
