Winnable FBS Games
WIU at Illinois 11:00 a.m. Big 10 Network- A FCS program on the rise vs an FBS program in turmoil, usually the ingredients for a potential upset. WIU looked sharp last week against EIU but this is a whole different kind of beast. But WIU is definitely a kind of team that can sneak up on you, NDSU found out that the hard way last year and this year's version of the Leathernecks is even better.
Key FCS Games
SUU at SDSU 6:00 p.m. Midco Sports Network- Can the Rabbits avoid the letdown after getting their first FBS scalp? SUU defensively was very impressive against Utah State last Saturday. Strong Safety Miles Killebrew, CB LeShaun Sims and DE James Cowser make up a dynamic trio of defenders for the Thunderbirds..all three have potential to make the Senior Bowl per the better FCS scouting minds. Sims will need to be especially sharp on Saturday as he gets the job of trying to shut down SDSU receiver Jake Wieneke. The reigning Co-MVFC Offensive Player of the Week torched Kansas for 160 yards receiving and two touchdowns. If Wieneke can repeat that performance it could be very tough for SUU to come out of Brookings with a win.
EWU at UNI 1:00 p.m CSN Chicago/EPSN3/ESPN College Extra- Some may think that this should be the FCS GOTW but after a shaky performance against Iowa State the Panthers look more like pretenders then contenders. UNI's offense sputtered against the Big 12 cellar dwellers, often leaving their defense having to defend short fields. If the same scenario happens on Saturday EWU could blow UNI out of their dome. The Eagles looked very sharp offensively against a top 10 FBS team in Oregon. Cooper Kupp didn't miss a beat with new QB Jordan West, Kupp piled up 246 yards receiving and hauled in 3 TDs. This is crucial game for either team as nobody wants to dig themselves out of an 0-2 hole, UNI especially with games at Cal Poly, Illinois State and NDSU on the horizon.
FCS Game of the Week
Villanova at Fordham 5:00 p.m. Campus Insiders(see info below)- If you don't know who Chase Edmonds is, you need to educate yourself. The Sophomore running back is one of the most dynamic running backs in the FCS. The Jerry Rice award winner racked up 127 yards and 3 TDs on the ground and added 140 yards of receiving in Fordham's 37-35 win over Army. Edmonds even drew praise from coach Klieman in his weekly press conference, calling him a special, special player and Klieman highlighted Fordham as a team to watch out for.
But Edmonds is not the only star in this match up. Villanova senior and Walter Payton Award winner QB John Robertson is a playmaker. Robertson scored 4 TDs in Nova's 50-6 rout over Fordham last year and is a dual threat nightmare for any defense to try to contain. Another big game could be in store for the 2014 Walter Payton Award winner if Fordham can't tighten up a defense that looked suspect at times against Army last week.
The showdown between these two supremely talented offensively players should be fun to watch.
