Be prepared for a ton of smoke. I live right between two mountains and today neither one is even close to visible and one of them is maybe at the most two miles away. Hopefully this changes by Sat.:(

Bison should have had tire fires surrounding the practice field the past few weeks to simulate

How smokey do dumpster fires get? Maybe they could wheel some down from up North for the last couple practices?

Instead of having misting machines on the sidelines, they would have pure oxygen for the players to breathe in those conditions.

Will this have an impact on the game?

With the little smoke we had over here earlier this summer there were a number of different health advisories issued. That air looks to be far worse and I can't imagine that it will make breathing in that altitude any easier.

The altitude on its own I wouldn't be too worried about, but what about the altitude plus smoke in the air?

I've heard that Coach Kramer has been adding this along with the salt to the player's Gatorade:

Missoula is "only" at 3,200 ft. Wyoming is at about 6,100 ft., Colorado State and Weber State are close to 5,000 ft. or so.

Interesting. I assumed it was higher than that. I must've been thinking of Bloomington instead of Missoula.

Changing winds and dry conditions have made Montana a tinderbox this month, diluting air quality to a point less than ideal for athletics. Still, the air quality has not reached -- or come close to -- a level that would cause UM to consider calling off Saturday's contest with the Bison.

"It would have to be really, really, really, really bad for us to shut it down," said Chuck Maes, Montana's associate athletic director of internal operations. "Not saying never because you just don't know, but for the game itself, it would be really hard to cancel it."

I worked in Missoula on the railroad for a couple summers in the early 80's. I remember the malfunction junction. 5 way stop light. And yes many hippies. I think it was known as the hash capitol of the US back then.

Love the state. Worked in Glacier Park, Bozeman, Great Falls, Kalispell and many other places there. Now the eastern part of the state is about as desolate as it gets.

maps that show the air quality..

http://www.airnow.gov/#tabs-1

If you click the loop tab you can see how it has changed throughout the day. Not much happened today. Unless they get a good rain and then wind to move some of it out probably stick around a bit. Think we had some high level smoke from that area last thurs or friday the sun color was that reddish orange (when the clouds weren't covering which probably were 25-30% smoke anyway) tint, but didn't have any of the smoky smell.

We've been staying 1 hour from Missoula the past couple days. The smoke is so thick we can't see the mountains that surround us. Doesn't bother our lungs or eyes at all. I ran this morning and the smoke didn't bother a bit and it did bother me at home this July.

Are they going to cancel them for the next six weeks if it continues? Why do they think anything will change.

Horrible for the local fans, but how about awesome would a game be at another venue away from from the smoke- especially if the game is good.
