Bison should have 6 guys in the tournament and a really good chance at cracking the top 20, or higher, with a couple solid performances. I'll hold off on predictions until the brackets come out, but I'm really hoping for some good draws. With Bengston's big move potential and funk and Ream doing one thing exceptionally well, they could be bracket busters if given a good draw. Julson is competitive with most guys in the 10-20 range too and could pull an upset. I expect Rodriguez, Zillmer, and Knutson to all be seeded (my guess is 12th, 8th, and 12th). Hopefully Knutson's wins over Kroells and Cabell count more than his first loss in 6 tries the past two years to Evarard (while being hurt too) in the seeding. Knutson should leapfrog Tavanello but I think Kroells jumps ahead of him in the seeds.

Brackets come out Wednesday http://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2015/March/09/NCAA-sets-schedule-to-release-field-and-brackets

Rodriguez 14 seed (Wyo's guy seeded 8 but faces former champ Jesse Delgado), Bengston unseeded and matches up with number 2, Ream in a pigtail match for the right to face #1 Houdashelt, Julson unseeded and facing 10 seed, Zilmer 6 seed (I think he has a good shot at AA), Knutson 16 seed. Those brackets look tough. I don't think there are any easy wins left.

I think Zilmer has a good shot of getting at least to the quarters and a decent chance of making the semis. If NDSU is going to place in the Top-20, they're going to need at least one All-American and a few wins from everyone else in the consolation brackets. It's going to be tough, but attainable. Let's go guys, it's time to challenge yourselves!

I assume all the unseeded wrestlers were random draws? Every match looks tough but I guess that should be expected. Disappointed that Zilmer will face Pfarr of MN in his second match as I'm cheering for the Gophers to win the team title. Pfarr finished second in the Big Ten tourney and will be really tough to beat.

Also not excited about the wrestling tourney being the same weekend as the opening round of the Men's BB tourney.

The Gophers have an outside chance to win, but with the horses that Missouri is bringing this year, it's going to be tough to get past them.

Some very questionable seeding. Some made no sense and how they justify not seeding Delgado, Kindig, and Brascetta is beyond me.

Rodriguez beats Cox twice, wins the conference tourney, and has the better overall year...and Rodriguez gets the 14 seed and Cox is at 8...I would be more upset if that 8 seed didn't put Cox in the quarter of death. Delgado in round 1 and then Terao or Peters next is just brutal. Martinez in the first round is a really tough draw too for Rodriguez. That's a guy who has lived in the top 10 for 3 years. I have Rodriguez beating the pigtail winner (I have Martinez), and losing to Dance. In the wrestlebacks, I have him beating 13 seed Ben Willeford (Who I think Lizak upsets in rd 1), before losing to Jordan Conaway of Penn State. 2-2. Of note, I have Martinez and Cox losing in round 1 and both battling back to AA and meet in the 7th place match. So even if Rodriguez loses to Martinez, there is hope (and to be honest, an easier road to AA IMO).

Bengston should lose right away, but he could rattle some wins off in the wrestlebacks. He's got big move potential and some funk. Definitely don't choose down vs Port. Go both up and go for something big. I have him Beating Jameson Oster of Northwestern and Mike Morales of West Virgina (who is great when going well, but has a ton of just odd, down matches), before losing to Geo Martinez of Boise State. Both of the matches I have him winning are toss ups, or have Mitch as the slight underdog. 2-2

Ream has a chance for a run... I have him winning the pigtail, losing to Houdashelt. In the wrestlebacks, I have him beating Nelson (Purdue) and losing to #15 BJ Clagon. I think there is a legit chance of a R12 run for him though. Clagon isn't special, and after that I have Theobold from Rutgers as next up (I have a ton of upsets at this weight). Nelson worries me in the first wrestleback though, he is slick on his feet. Clay does 1 thing exceptionally well though, and I do think he'll have success with it next week.

Julson has a pretty decent draw. Martin isn't great and if he can get by him, he'll have Epperly, who he lost to in OT. I don't expect him to win those, but he has as good of a draw as he could hope for. I have him going 1-2. If he beats Martin, quarterfinals are doable.

Zillmer is in a pretty rough, but not unwinnable, spot. Courts in round 1 is the worst draw at that weight. If he gets by him, then Pfarr, who is always down to the wire with him. If he gets by that match, then has Stauffer, which I agree is the guy you want in the quarter. I have him making the semis, before losing, and taking 5th. I have some major upsets here too.

Knutson as the 16 seed really bugged me too, probably more so than Cox over Rodriguez. He won the most recent match with Kroells (9 seed) and beat Cabell (7 seed) 4-1 this year, and hadn't lost in 2015 until he got hurt in the conference championship vs a guy who he had beaten twice decisively this year and was 6-0 lifetime against. That same guy who he is now 6-1 against beat Kroells this year too in their only meeting. I just don't get it. I have Evan winning in round one, before getting destroyed by Gwiz. In the wrestlebacks, I have him beating Harms from Wyoming, and Cabell (who I think loses rd1) before losing in the round of 12 to Adam Coon of Michigan.

Very homerish predictions, and I will admit that this is very best case scenario. All of them do indeed have legitimate hope for a successful week though.

Well, Delgado's 9-3 so I could see him, but Kindig, yeah....

Big Bird
03-12-2015, 02:30 PM
The only thing I can think of, was that the committee was privy to injury info that isn't publicly available. AJ Schopp as the #9 seed is blasphemy, unless they know he is significantly injured, which is the rumor de jour. Maybe they know something about Delgado, Kindig (also rumored to be significantly injured), Brascetta, Schopp, etc that the public doesn't.

To be honest, Delgado is the one I understand the least. He lost a close match to #1 Waters, a 1 point match to Big Ten champ #4 Tomasello, and he's a 2 time defending national champion, 3 time AA. He hasn't been winning matches by much, but he's beating the guys he should. By not seeding him, you're punishing the seeded guys who he runs into. He isn't at his best right now, but he's still a top 8 guy and I fully expect him to beat Cox right away.

There were rumblings that Kindig was legitimately on the bubble for getting a wildcard, which I don't understand at all. Again, Dave Habat gets screwed by having to go through a 2 time AA in the first round, when he should have been seeded. I think Habat beats Kindig, but that's a crazy tough draw.

Less than 24 hours away! My three predictions: NDSU finishes in the Top-20, Zillmer earns All-American status and Missouri edges Ohio State for the title.

That's (yours) the only pronunciation of Knutson I have ever heard.

Apparently, the announcer in Rodriguez's match against Martinez claimed Rodriguez as being a Jackrabbit from South Dakota State. I think a couple of these guys are falling asleep on the job. The San Diego State reference is unbelievable being that I don't believe they have had a wrestling program at the varsity level, let alone Division I, since probably the early 80's. These announcers are suppose to be well educated about wrestling.

Because of NDSU, the WWC will have a total of two AA's. This will tie the PAC-12 and making me wrong about guaranteeing the PAC-12 having more AA's this year.

I believe that this is just the beginning of great things to come, especially with NDSU (and the rest of WWC) joining the Big-12 next year. Successful program in a big time conference will lead to NDSU being able to get more top-notch recruits. Perhaps, they will be able start beating the Big-10 teams for local recruits.

Didn't get a chance to post while in St Louis (days are long and somebody needs to finish the drinks between sessions). After a poor start, NDSU wrestled really well. The rest of the WWC had a rough tourney, except for Northern Colorado. The fighting Troy Nickerson's are going to be good in the coming years. Love what he is doing.
125- Rodriguez is as good as any at the weight with his leg attacks. He NEEDS to get better on the bottom and finish better in scrambles. Nobody can keep him off of their legs, but he struggles to finish when guys scramble. Putting him neutral vs Boyle in the third was absolutely the right decision, even though it didn't work out. He was dominating on his feet and gave one up. Have to be able to get away in the last 45 seconds to go to OT. I fully expect Rodriguez to AA next year. His skillset is great.
141- Rough tourney for Bengston but not surprising. My concern with him is that he doesn't generate consistent offense with attacks. He is dangerous with his funk, but needs to use more leg attacks. He has a great single, he really needs to use it more. Great freshman year though. Must improve if he wants to stay ahead of Zilverberg from SDSU.
149- My favorite wrestler in the country. He is a hammer on top and his sweep single is getting better and better. For what he lacks in athleticism, he more than makes up for it in grit and aggressiveness. The sky is the limit with him and he should have a top 20 ranking to start next year.
174- Great tournament by Kurt. Wrestled aggressively and put together the tournament of his life. He gave guys fits with his underhooks and his constant pressure. He had a number of solid wins. He far exceeded everyone's expectations and represented NDSU very well. Great career
184- Nobody had a tougher road to AA than Hayden. I said before the tourney started that he had the toughest draw at this weight with Courts in round 1 and that held true. He had a brutal road, but he kept his head in it and wrestled very well. He should be in the mix for a title next year. I expect a stronger Zillmer next year and that's scary for the rest of the 184 weight class. Just would like to see him more comfortable in scrambles.
HWT- Going to miss Knutson a ton. You don't find many 3 time qualifiers in mid majors at heavyweight. Didn't look 100% against Kroells, which is a shame, but he still was able to win 2 matches. This weight is likely to be a big time struggle with big Ev gone. Another truly great career which exceeded everyone's expectations.

On the whole, great showing and just remember, they return 4 guys who won there weight in the WWC. Add in Matt Grey and Justin Scherkenbach hopefully coming back strong from injury, and Nehring's rapid improvement, and this team can do big things again. Fogarty is a big time recruit who could step into the lineup if needed and I saw Roger talking to a couple kids at the open USA wrestling practice. The future is incredibly bright for this program and I'm very hopeful we see our first national champion with Hayden Zillmer next year. He destroyed this year national champion (while they were both fully healthy too, so no asterisk by the win) at Vegas in December.

Good assessment of the tournament. The only argument I would present is about Hayden beating Dean at the Cliff Keen event in Las Vegas. Dean was actually ill during that event, but still well enough to wrestle. Therefore, still an impressive win for Zillmer.

The one thing I would like to add is that Gene Smith, AD of Ohio State, has got be the happiest person at the NCAA's based on the bonuses he will soon be receiving due to his team's outstanding performance (http://sports.yahoo.com/news/college-wrestler-wins-title--athletic-director-gets--18-000-bonus-210331816.html).

I still have them as a Top-20 Team due to some teams getting major points from one or two wrestlers (for example, making the finals scores at least 16 points). Although Bengston didn't score any points (and I believe he will in the near future), the other five Bison did, which constitutes half the team scoring. Outside the power schools in wrestling, not many teams can make that claim. Very good future for this team.
