NDSU is a lock and I believe sdsu is also. Everyone else is up in the air. Big12 not a fan of UVU

T'weren't no interwebs for me on this vacation... except in some very limited cases.

However, I just saw a tweet saying NDSU and SDSU are a-going to the XII.

Offer was to NDSU, SDSU, Air Force, Wyoming, UNC and Utah Valley (reading the OSU and ISU boards not sure they were really happy with the thought of UVU but they came with the rest of us).

It will be all six teams of the WWC that will merge with the Big-12. Here's some more information regarding the merger (http://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2015/March/07/Oklahoma-State-powers-to-championship-at-Big-12-tournament)

The other big question, one that has accompanied the Big 12 Championships the last several seasons, concerns the league’s future. Will there be a Big 12-Western Wrestling Conference merger or some other plan for a qualifier starting in 2016? Coaches made it clear that an announcement is forthcoming.

“We should be a 10-team conference next year,” Jackson said after Saturday’s first session. “We will have affiliate members in wrestling and it will be the Western Wrestling Conference. We will have all six of those teams join our conference. I think the Ts are being crossed and the Is are being dotted.”

Historically, the Big 12 has been among the NCAA’s best – the conference, including the old Big Eight, owns 49 of the 84 NCAA title trophies awarded. Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, and Iowa State have produced a combined 77 Olympians.

What remains a mystery to me, is if the PAC-12 coaches can convince their AD's and PAC-12 Administrators that they need to be a part of this merger. If they don't, their conference will now risk dropping in status compared to the other wrestling conferences. Right now, they are better than the WWC and arguably better than the Big-12. Those two combined will bypass them immediately and become the second best conference, only behind the Big-10.

The Pac12 is not better than the WWC if you look at the number of qualifiers. They both had 19. I don't think there was even a ranked team from that conference this year:

QUALIFIER ALLOCATIONS FOR 2014 NCAA DI WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Conference 125 133 141 149 157 165 174 184 197 285 Total
Atlantic Coast Conference 3 3 4 3 2 3 5 2 2 2 29
Big Ten Conference 5 12 8 7 8 8 10 10 9 9 86
Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association 3 3 5 3 7 4 2 5 6 5 43
Eastern Wrestling League 2 2 1 3 2 1 1 2 1 2 17
Mid-American Conference 2 1 3 5 3 4 3 2 6 4 33
Pacific-12 Conference 2 2 2 2 3 2 2 2 1 1 19

Keep in mind, the Big-12 got 0 qualifying allocations this year, and I would have a hard time ranking any conferences stronger than them outside the Big-10 and maybe the EIWA. I don't think the qualifying allocation total is the best way to measure the strength of a conference. I prefer to measure a conference's strength based on their total amount of All-Americans per team ratio.

Just compare the six teams each between the PAC-12 and the WWC:

Arizona State, Boise State, CSU-Bakersfield, Cal Poly, Oregon State and Stanford vs. NDSU, SDSU, UNC, USAFA, UVU and Wyoming.

Although the PAC-12 isn't strong this year, I'm pretty sure they will still have more All-Americans in two weeks than the WWC. Last year their conference edged us 2 to 1.

Here's the breakdown from 2014:

Big-10: 34 AA
Big-12: 11 AA
EIWA: 10 AA
ACC: 9 AA
MAC: 8 AA
EWL: 3 AA
SoCon: 2 AA
PAC-12: 2 AA
WWC: 1 AA

Well, is 2 versus 1 really that big of a gap? 2 to 1 sure, but that sounds like a HUGE gap. It's really not.

I've mentioned this in the past. The opinion I got from the PAC-12 coaches I talked to was that they felt the were going to be left on an island if they weren't involved. Since the PAC-12 schools already compete with most of the WWC and Big-12 schools each year, might as well make it a big conference. Apparently the administrators in the PAC-12 aren't as enthused as the coaches to merge with the other conferences.

Another big question that will need to be answered is which conference is Fresno State joining if the there isn't a full merger. PAC-12 for seven teams, or the Big-12 to make it 11 teams? Before the program was dropped, they were suppose to part of the WWC, so either conference make sense for them.

In regards to Northern Iowa, it will be interesting as I doubt the MAC would want a good to leave and make their conference weaker.

Coach Smith at Mizzou hasn't said anything about wanting to leave the MAC that I've heard publicly anyway. I have a few friends that are MIzzou Alumni and they haven't heard anything about leaving the MAC anytime soon.

Well want might be the wrong word. But in terms of geography and recruiting, the Salt Lake metro has way more in common with Boise, Fresno, Bakersfield and the rest of the PAC 12 then it does with the Big 12.

Between Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Iowa State, I believe the Big 12 has the most combined NCAA Titles.

John Smith, Kevin Jackson, Mark Cody and Sammie Henson are all great coaches and will be fun competing against. They're also good people.

Definitely a huge opportunity for NDSU!

I know that we all expected to see an "Official Announcement" by now but don't loose heart that this isn't going to actually happen. Here are a few things that ensure me that the merger is going through.

1) Interviews with Coaches like John Smith and Kevin Jackson and at the NCAA Social in the STL our very own Roger Kish along with Associate AD all saying that they expect this to happen.
2) This one might be the most telling though in that the Big XII has announced their Future Championship Venues for the upcoming season.

The above link will take you to the press release and in that press release it shows that the Big XII Wrestling Championships will be March 5-6, 2016 at the Sprint Center Kansas City, MO. ( On a side note: I personally like the location since it's only a 3 1/2 hour drive from the house) but you wouldn't sign a contract with a venue for a two day event for a Four (4) Team 40 Wrestler Total Tournament.

I talked to a SDSU coach last month during breakfast at the World Team Trials in Madison, WI about the merger and from what I could gather from him was that it will probably happen soon, but the hold up is actually at their end. I didn't ask anything further about it, but hopefully whatever the issue is, it will get resolved soon.

The Pac-12 teams need to be a part of this merger. Rumors are the Oregon State AD is the one mostly preventing it from happening. Again, just all heresay from other wrestling people.

Also rumored is that Fresno State and Grand Canyon State want to be of the Big 12 merger.

I heard while I was up in Fargo last week that the merger announcement might come as early as this week. I hope it does so schedules can start to roll out, I need to start planning my work schedule around the duals and tournys again.

As far as Fresno St & Grand Canyon joining the Big XII I have not heard anything about that but I believe that both are without conference homes so I could see this as a possibility.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the near future, but right now, it's hard to separate the truth from speculation. In regards to Fresno State, they were originally part of the WWC before the sport got dropped, so their possible inclusion to the Big 12 makes some sense.
