Welcome to Super Saturday in the FCS...tons and tons of great games....I will try to hit on them all...
Key FCS Games:
William & Mary at James Madison 2:30 ASN- This CAA battle will likely leave one team still in the race for an at-large playoff spot while the other would be on the outside looking in with four losses. JMU is starting to play better under new head coach Everett Whithers, winners of three straight but a win here would provide them with their first marquee win. For William and Mary, a win would likely put them in control of their playoff destiny.
South Dakota State at North Dakota State 2:30 p.m. NBC ND/Midco Sports/ESPN3- The Jacks have their backs to the wall looking for anything to spark their playoff hopes, but going to the Fargodome will be no easy task. NDSU has rolled off five straight wins against SDSU and have left running back sensation Zach Zenner completely stonewalled. The Jacks will need a big game and a clean game from QB Zach Lujan if they want to keep pace with the Bison. Who will have some opportunities to score against an SDSU defense that has had some troubles.
Chattanooga at Western Carolina 1 p.m.- This is pretty much the SoCon title game, both teams are undefeated at 4-0 in conference play. The winner will be in complete control of their own destiny. WCU might be the biggest comeback story in the FCS this year, WCU's 4 wins match their total number of wins from 2006-2013 combined. A win here would likely cement Mark Speir as the SoCon coach of the year and perhaps the FCS coach of they year.
Sam Houston State at SFA(Game is at NRG Stadium in Houston) 3 p.m. ESPN3/Altitude2- This game is basically Sam Houston's last stand, with 4 losses they cannot drop another game and that would leave them out of the FCS playoffs for the first time since 2010. Meanwhile for SFA a win here would keep them at the top of the SLC conference standings and put them one step closer to locking up a playoff spot. Playoff talk aside, this is also the Battle of Piney Woods, and to further motivate SFA the Bearkats have walked away with the trophy in their last 3 match ups.
NC Central at Bethune-Cookman 3 p.m.- This is a loser out game in the MEAC, NCCU also has a win over SC state so a win here would give them a leg up in race for the coveted MEAC autobid. Six MEAC teams have just one conference loss, so this game should provide some separation in the standings. Bethune is fresh off a tough loss to SC State, it should be interesting to see how they respond. They are perhaps the only team that could get an at-large since they do have an FBS win but with a weak SOS their margin for error is razor thin.
Illinois State at UNI 4 p.m. Comcast Chicago Plus- This game to me is where Illinois State's unbeaten streak could come to an end. UNI has had an up and down season in 2014 but last week they did play well at WIU. A year ago Illinois State basically put the nail in UNI's playoff coffin giving them their fifth loss, this is now the Panthers shot to derail the Redbirds hopes for a perfect season. This should be an intense battle, both teams love to run the ball and have some dynamic playmakers in David Johnson and Tre Roberson.
Montana State at Cal Poly 8 p.m Big Sky TV- This should be the perfect finish to a great day of FCS football. Last week Cal Poly was impressive, rushing for 421 yards and racking up 41 points in a 20 point blowout of the Montana Grizzlies. Now Montana's instate brother gets to deal with the Mustangs and anyone that has watched Montana State try to tackle rushing orientated teams in the FCS playoffs knows full well their struggles in trying to stop them. MSU has an offense that can score on anyone, Dakota Prukop has been putting up video game stats in the Big Sky but this game to me is what will show if they are a legit contender in the FCS playoffs.
FCS Game of the Week:
Villanova at Richmond 11 a.m. SNY/Comcast Sports Net- This game might be all that stands in the way of Nova running the table in the CAA. The Wildcats have been on a tear with QB John Robertson leading the charge, Nova has scored 40 or more points in six of their eight games and Robertson is almost a lock for the Payton Award. Only Syracuse of the ACC has kept them under 30 points.
Richmond though will present a tough challenge, the Spiders are 6-2 and their only FCS loss was a 3 point defeat to a top 5 UNH team. They have rolled off four straight wins since that loss, QB Michael Rocco hasn't missed a beat while stepping in for injured QB Michael Strauss. The UVA transfer Rocco threw for 296 yards in Richmond's 30-10 win over Elon last week. Richmond is very likely going to be the toughest challenge for Nova's defense, the Spiders average 492 yards of offense per game. This game could turn into a shootout and perhaps the last team with the ball wins.
