Once again the big games this week take on an MVFC flavor...
Winnable FBS Games:
Liberty at Appalachian State 2:30 ESPN3- I guess we can call App State FBS now, Liberty is an average FCS team but App State is 1-3 and not that good. Should be an interesting game at the rock. Both teams are desperate for a win.
Key FCS Games:
Illinois State at Indiana State 2 p.m. Comcast Chicago/ESPN3- This was almost my FCS game of the week, it was a tie that was settled in a stache off. Dale Lennon narrowly beat out ISUR HC Brock Spack who also has a killer stache. Now back to the game and this should be perhaps the most interesting ISU Red vs Blue game in a long time. Last week ISUB struggled a bit offensively, Mike Perish had one of his worst games of the season but it was against a very stout UNI defense. The Sycamores were able to beat UNI on a wide receiver pass by Chris O'leary, however they will likely need more than just trick plays to beat Illinois State. The Redbirds remain undefeated on the season after running over SDSU, ISUR had over 300 yards of rushing and the game was basically over by halftime. ISUB has still shown to be leaky against the run, allowing David Johnson to run for over 5 yards per carry. The two headed rushing attack of RB Marshaun Coprich and QB Tre Roberson for ISUR will provide an even stiffer test for the Trees defense this week. The winner of this game will join the winner of the NDSU-SIU at the head of the MVFC class.
William & Mary at New Hampshire 2:30 NBC Sports Network- Both of these teams are undefeated in CAA play, both will need to win to keep pace with Villanova. UNH does not play Nova so a win here and I could see them running the table. This match up is a classic offense vs defense battle. UNH has scored over 40 points in three of their past four games, the only game they didn't go for 40 or more was a gritty road win at CAA rival Richmond. Last season William and Mary shut out UNH so there is no doubt the Wildcats are looking to have a better showing against them on Saturday.
Missouri State at South Dakota State 6 p.m. Midco Sports Net- You could call this the first elimination game in the Valley. I know it is odd saying that in early October but an 0-2 hole in this conference is going to make the rest of the way an uphill climb to say the least. Last year the Bears routed SDSU, rolling up over 350 yards on the ground in a 35-21 game that featured a score that was much closer then reality. SDSU just got beat in a similar fashion this past Saturday against Illinois State. Last year SDSU responded to the beating that MSU gave them by knocking off UNI at home in a crucial must win game. Will history repeat itself for the Jacks? Or can MSU rebound after its dynamic offense was held to just 7 points at home against YSU with another big game vs SDSU, both teams need a win and both are looking to bounce back in a big way...that should create a very intense game in Brookings.
FCS Game of the Week:
Southern Illinois at North Dakota State 1 p.m. NBC ND/ESPN3- Like I said before, this is the game of the week by a whisker. Dale Lennon and his stache will come to Fargo looking for their first win at the dome since leaving the barren frozen outhouse on the plains that is UND to lead the Egyptian dogs from Carbondale. Lennon's teams have usually come into Fargo and played NDSU tough but have lacked the ability to get that one huge play that could swing the result in their favor. This year they will have new weapons at their disposal, QB Mark Iannotti is averaging over 240 yards of passing and just over 90 of those yards are being hauled in by all-world TE MyCole Pruitt. Also different this year is Lennon taking over full control of the SIU defense, which has resulted in a more aggressive SIU defense that has amassed 22 sacks. The main issue for SIU is that they have started slow, WIU was up 14-10 at the half against them and a struggling USD team was tied with SIU at home at the half. Purdue buried SIU in a deep hole that they could never climb out of. This is another big game for NDSU QB Carson Wentz, WIU had some success through the air against SIU and with Lennon likely focusing on John Crockett who gashed the Saluki defense last year in Carbondale, some opportunities will arise for Wentz to make some big plays. NDSU as many here are familiar with have also had the issue with some slow starts, the winner of this game might very well come down to who can finish stronger.
