FCS Week 6

The big games in the FCS definitely have an MVFC flavor to them this week and it is a shame since the MVFC's horrific media package makes these games hard to watch unless you want to spend money on crappy web feeds. Patty V definitely needs to step up her game.

Key FCS Games:
UNI at Indiana State 2 p.m.- This is a very compelling game, this game features a clash of styles, the trees and QB Mike Perish have been shredding opposing defenses through the air while UNI and their beast running back David Johnson have been running over their competition. My main concern in this game is really if Indiana State can slow UNI down on the ground, Indiana State has played one great running team in Indiana and the Hoosiers ran all over the trees to the tune of 445 yards. Combine that fact with UNI's salty defense and it could force QB Mike Perish to be extremely efficient in order for them to upset the Panthers if they can't slow down Johnson. While Indiana State has beaten two decent teams in Ball State and Liberty, this game in my opinion is where we will find out whether Indiana State is a Valley contender or pretender.

YSU at Missouri State 2 p.m.- This is yet another fabulous game and is yet another measuring stick to use to tell us just where a valley team is at and that team is YSU. The Penguins have slaughtered a rather unimpressive list of foes, they did play well in a losing effort to Illinois but there is nothing yet that really screams to me that the Penguins are a contender. This is their chance, Missouri State has been vetted. They beat a solid Northwestern State team on the road and a UCA team on the road that is by no means bad, they also had a respectable performance at Oklahoma State. QB Kierra Harris is a playmaker, he can beat you with his arm and legs. Add in receiver Julian Burton and you might the most dynamic duo in the MVFC. Containing those players will be key for YSU if they want to prove that they have the defensive chops to contend in the MVFC. Last year they were exposed defensively, they have some offensive playmakers but in the Valley you win with defense.

SC State at North Carolina A&T 2:30 p.m. ESPN3- This is a game that will set up who is going to battle with Bethune-Cookman for the MEAC title. Both SC State and NC A&T have just one FCS loss to top 5 Coastal Carolina, SC State was the team last year that beat the Aggies and sent them into a tailspin after an impressive 3-0 start. This is their chance for redemption. SC State's defense as usual is the best in the MEAC but their offense has yet to impress. The most points they have scored vs an FCS or FBS team is 17 against Furman and Hampton. NC A&T meanwhile has had no issue scoring points or racking up yardage, they are averaging over 240 yards per game on the ground and are led by running back Tarik Cohen who is gouging opponents for 140 yards per game. Stopping that rushing attack will be the key of the game, if SC State can't do it their anemic offense will have a tough time keeping pace.

FCS Game of the Week:
SDSU at Illinois State 2 p.m.- This game should be fun. This is really the first time Illinois State will lock horns with good team, they will not play an FBS team this year and their non-conference schedule was very soft. Adding more intrigue to this game is the fact that Illinois State and SDSU haven't played each other since 2011 so nobody really knows just how the Redbirds defense will match up with Zach Zenner and Co. ISU has won six straight home games, no team has beat them in Normal since NDSU in 2012. Meanwhile SDSU is coming into this game battled tested, they played a really good Mizzou team and competed well and they knocked off a pair of Big Sky teams without much trouble. With that said SDSU still has yet to prove they can beat a good team with QB Austin Sumner not under center. ISU's defense will not be pushed around like a Big Sky school was against SDSU's hogs on the OL, so QB Zach Lujan will likely need to make some plays to keep the defense honest. I think Lujan's play well be huge in this game, if can continue's his solid play since stepping in as QB I think this is a game SDSU will win but if he struggles in his first tough road conference game as a starter it could be the Redbirds notching a huge win early in conference play.

Not this week. Only one ESPN3 game and that is NDSU. So to watch any of the other games you would have to pay for the webcasts or find a pirated free stream.

It is kind of sad that the MVFC is the SEC of the FCS on the field but when it comes to media we are the MAC of the FCS.

Just for a baseline, Sagarin makes both 8 1/2 point road favorites. That translates to something like 13:1 that both Ill St and Ind St come through for you. Bold but not implausible especially given QB situation w/ SDSU and early in the season yet. I like it.

I think the difference between UN_ and Western Illinois is tremendous and that is a testament to the dumpster fire that is UN_ football because Western Illinois is not a world beater by any means.
