Week 4 is here and finally there are a ton of great match ups to breakdown...
Winnable FCS vs FBS Games:
SIU at Purdue 11 a.m. Big 10 Network- Dale Lennon and his stache are red hot, starting the season out at 3-0 and after NDSU the Salukis have the next longest active winning streak in the FCS at 5 games. Meanwhile Purdue is horrible, considered by many great FBS minds to be among the bottom five teams among the power five conferences. This is a great chance for the MVFC to bring even more misery to commissioner Jim Delany's conference.
Key FCS Games:
JMU at Nova 11:30 a.m. SNY/Comcast Sports Network- The CAA favorite Wildcats open up CAA play against a new look JMU team under first year head coach Everett Withers. So far the Dukes have been a bit inconsistent, getting trounced by Maryland of the Big 10 and winning on the road against Lehigh. This is Withers' first shot to make some waves in the FCS, Villanova is in my mind the best team not named NDSU or EWU in the subdivision. Their QB John Robertson is a stud that can burn teams with both his arm and legs. In Nova's last game against Fordham he threw for 216 yards and 3 TDs and ran for 61 yards and 1 TD. He also had a stellar performance against Syracuse of the ACC. Slowing him down will be pivotal for JMU to say the least.
EWU at Montana State 2:10 p.m. Root Sports Rocky Mountain/Northwest/Direct TV 101- What makes this game compelling is the fact that EWU will be playing on the road and so far this season Montana State has shown that they can light up the scoreboard on their home turf. MSU put up 44 points against a decent UCA team out of the Southland last week. Racking up over 220 yards on the ground and over 280 through the air, a balanced attack like that should be a concern for EWU fans everywhere since their defense well struggles at stopping almost any offense. But EWU fans will enjoy this next stat and that is the fact that MSU gave up almost 400 yards of passing to UCA. Yeah, Vernon Adams is no doubt licking his chops after watching the game tape of UCA-MSU. Expect the scoreboard in Bozeman to get a good workout on Saturday.
UNH at Richmond 3 p.m. SNY/Comcast Sports Bay Area/Comcast Sports Northeast- The winner of this game could likely emerge as the team that is going to contend with Villanova for the CAA title. Both teams are a bit of mystery right now, losing big to their FBS opponents while crushing their non-top 25 FCS opponents. This game will really come down to defense and likely which team can get the most stops and create turnovers. Both offenses have proven to be dynamic in 2014 while both defenses have had struggles vs the good teams but have shut down everyone else in their path.
FCS Game of the Week:
Montana at NDSU 2:30 p.m. NBC ND/Cowles Media/ESPN3/ESPN Game Plan- Was there any doubt that this would be the game of the week? Two top 5 teams and a huge Valley vs Big Sky match up. The dome should be rocking for this border battle. I think the key to this game will come down to the QBs. Carson Wentz will need to show that his mistakes vs Weber State are in the past, Montana will no doubt try to stuff the run and make the first-year QB beat them. Montana has scored 35 points off of turnovers, so if you make mistakes the Griz have shown that they will capitalize. Montana QB Jordan Johnson has gotten off to a slow start this year, he will need to be better if he is going to stop the Bison defense from honing in on the Grizzly rushing attack led by Jordan Canada. This early season match up could go a long ways to deciding homefield and seeding come playoff time. It will also give the winner's conference some bragging rights. A lot is on the line in this border battle.
