Surveying the SD landscape, this is my South Dakota wish list for NDSU 2015 recruits:

Deng Geu (Sioux Falls Washington): 6'7" Forward. Super-athletic and bouncy. Kind of raw and needs to put on some weight, but definitely D1 talent. (Think Trayvonn).

Addison Park (Sioux Falls Lincoln): 6'7' Forward. More polished than Deng, big body and skilled. Game similar to Bjorkland (just not the size).

Nate Brown Bull (Little Wound): 7'1" Center. Plays in Class A on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Total Wild Card. Raw (like doesn't have a post move). Needs to add weight, but he's athletic and runs the court well. With coaching...he could be a real gem.

Can he handle the change in culture? Does he play with a chip on his shoulder? He lives in a bad place and if he is sincere about getting out then good for him.

Appears you took too many Native American classes and not enough (any?!?!) English classes . . .

Segue : an uninterrupted transition from one piece of music or film scene to another.

Segway:

And the scary (and sad) thing is that contacting directly potential recuits is not beyond you.

Deng did attend South, hearing he may transfer to Shanley for his SR year. He wants to play close to home so if he stays there it will be SDSU if he moves to Fargo it will be NDSU. He is a big time rim protector with his swatting abilities. Yes, he is raw but definitely is very athletic. He recently played up here with Shanley and just dominated.

The United States Air Force Academy Preparatory School, better known as the “Prep School,” is designed to academically, physically and militarily prepare qualified young men and women to enter the Academy. If you are not accepted into the Academy, you may receive an appointment to the Prep School. Successful completion of the Prep School improves chances for appointment as an Air Force Academy cadet, but does not guarantee one.

.......well actually he was at the prep school. He's a fan not a reporter. He has lakes dream job. All rainbows and butterflies. 2 star kid. If a kid quits he makes sure to let everyone know the poor kid had only one tackle last year..... Like it won't matter he quit. I know all our media very well and tv is a homer. Period. Great man apparently but u couldn't pay him to challenge a thing sdsu has done. He will not ask a tough question. Shit u just signed a kid with a pending domestic abuse case yet are making fun of the big sky team who stole from a frat house. Pick a side. I'm sure u guys love him because he's super fan.

Mr. Burgundy

Side note: I like it when a school or team has a homer (Paul allen) but I like it more when someone balances it out. Call it like it is. TV is just too one sided for me. My opinion.

Alex Illikainen - 6' 9" F - Brewster Academy - currently at # 94 on ESPN's 2015 player rankings. Many, many offers.
And speaking of players who have blown up - 6' 7" Michael Hurt of Rochester John Marshall (2016 interest)
is at #60 on those ESPN rankings. Listed as having 6 offers, including Northern Iowa and the Gophers.

It's in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. Alex Illikainen transferred there for his senior season from Grand Rapids. I assume he went there not for academic help, like some players do, but for the higher level of competition. Refresh my memory on the Bison history of Illikainen, sounds familiar, perhaps a big O-lineman in the day?

And if you like teh hockies, check out Alex's sister Molly......
I see their parents' names are Darin and Mary (Darin listed as playing hockey at Duluth) ,
with 2 more sisters - Morgan and Madison

Yes, big Olineman. Darryl was his first name. He was from the Iron Range as well. He was actually drafted by some NHL team out of high school as a goalie. He was roughly 6'5" and over 300 by the time he graduated. I believe he is HC (football) at Proctor, MN right now.

I was guess it's the same family.

You guys are also listed as one of the top 5 in the Dan Jech sweepstakes. It'll be interesting to see if the signing of this other big man affects that situation one way or the other. Other choices for Jech include USD, Wofford, Lehigh and UW-Green Bay. Wouldn't be shocked if he goes with USD. The competition for big man minutes might not be so fierce down in Vermillion, especially with Craig Smith bringing in (I believe) a handful of 1 and 2-year JUCO kids as a quick patch to get things moving right away.

Sounds like it would be a solid duo down low for NDSU if Jech joined this Dylan Miller kid as a 2015 commit. Either way, I'm glad he doesn't appear to be going the D2 route. It seems Augie might've had too many young bigs to pursue Jech aggressively, and I would've been disappointed to see him wind up at Mankato or Winona for the next four years.

He is a teammate of football recruit C.J. Johnson, who verbaled to Wyoming

http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/recruiting/recruit-search-results

From summer league action:

Many of the coaches who have contacted Franzese are interested in Malik Hluchoweckyj, a 6-foot point guard from Bellevue West, who scored 13 points in the final. Creighton commit Justin Patton from Omaha North had 11.

The list for Hluchoweckyj includes Southern Illinois, Northern Colorado, Tulsa, North Dakota State,
South Dakota State, UNO and UMKC — and interest is growing.

“He blocked shots, he ran our team, he made open 3s, he found teammates,” Franzese said. “He was fully engaged and showed how good he can be. You could make a strong case he was the best player on the floor.”

I agree. Appears to have great court vision, looks to pass first, has a quick release and a nice touch on his outside jumper. I like him, I think he fits our system well. Definitely doesn't appear to have the first step of an LA or Woodside have but if he can run the offense efficiently I think we've recently signed some guys that can take it to the rim so not necessarily needed. Also have to remember this kid has some time to develop some speed and size before he even sets foot on the court in a Bison uniform. With Gibson off the table I think he's definitely a guy I'd like to see sign with us.

Miller and Geu can finalize things next week...cannot happen soon enough. They are very talented, and VERY DIFFERENT. They have bigtime upside, but in totally different ways. Miller is similar to Marshall. Deng wants to redshirt and be the best to ever play. He has high goals. Really cool kid. Homecoming king after only being in that school for a year and a half. He is high major talent. Pretty excited for that ink to dry. Eliason has impressed. He is more than what we had expected. He needs a redshirt year, but that is also to allow his body to continue to develop. he is a young kid. Coaches new they needed size and they addressed the problem. Will be fun to see if they hit on these kids.

Dont know much of anything on Miller, but if he is anything like Marshall thats great. Marshall was a special player for us, schools at our level don't get that kind of big very often, so thats quite the compliment to Miller. As for Deng I echo your excitement. I haven't been this excited for a recruit in awhile. Bigtime upside from just a terrific kid. Kids with his length and athletcism are so rare in our league. I agree, it's been a huge concern and it will be a bit of an issue this season with us being undersized but with Eliason and Wesenberg this year and these 2 guys coming in next year I think we've set ourselves up really well. With AJ having the redshirt year and only being a Freshman this year and Paul Miller looking like a future superstar the future is very bright for Bison basketball. The first year in the SHAC should be exciting in more ways than one.

With AJ having the redshirt year and only being a Freshman this year and Paul Miller looking like a future superstar the future is very bright for Bison basketball. The first year in the SHAC should be exciting in more ways than one.

The future looks nice for the green and yellow.

Sounded in the video like we are targeting a PG and a SF yet in this class, Richman made it sound like they had some guys in mind but also hinted at maybe hoping to find a gem in the late signing period. I definitely think with roster we have those are the 2 spots we could use an extra guy so I have faith in how this roster is being built.

Damn this kid has tremendous court vision, he's a creator, always looking to pass first but appears to have the ability to score as well. Only one highlight of him shooting from the outside and it had to circle the rim to fall so might need a little work there but a 6'3" PG who can create, drive and pass is welcome anytime as far as I'm concerned. Based on the video highlights I think I would prefer to get Harrison Diego as he appears to be a more complete player but I'd be pretty happy if we can add either one of these guys to our recruiting class.

I thought his name was mentioned previously but guess not. Kind of a kid flying under the radar back home. Has some good length for a true point guard at 6'3. His court vision and handles look very good in the highlight video. He does hold an offer from Army and has visited there. The staff obviously reached out to this kid and having Jayden visit shows they are pretty interested.

He grew 2 inches over the summer and is 6'7 now, put up 15 in the first half against Hopkins last night and finished with 20 for the game. Hopkins basically triple teamed him every time he touched the ball in the second half. Lots of coaches at the game last night, someone from Central Michigan, UNI and several others.

Speaking of Deng Geu (pronounced Goo according to the PA )..... just watched him dominate Roosevelt High School tonight. 19 pts, 12 rebounds, 4 or 5 blocks (lost count) ......take that times 2 the number of shots he altered. Gawd , the kid can jump. RHS players would attempt shots from the top of the key and here would come Deng like Wilt Chamberlain in his prime (yes, I'm that old) rising out of the paint to swat the ball away. Awesome to watch ! The Bison got themselves Trayvon Wright 2.0 in Deng Geu. Washington HS is undefeated so far.

He'd have a redshirt year to give the strength & conditioning coaches some time to build him up so I'm not worried about that. I think out of all the players I've seen so far that we've shown interest in either Kabellis or Harrison Diego would be the guy I'd like to seen in a Bison uniform.

It's obvious this is a big man that can score, does he come in and start right away for us next year? I don't see Kading not getting to start as a Senior but he could push Dex back to the 6th man role and the 3 of them could see equal minutes with Eliason seeing a little time here and there as needed due to foul trouble. Dex has been playing very well however so I guess Dylan could just come in as that first big off the bench as well. With Eliason, Miller and Geu all being added to the mix over the next two seasons our weakness this year will be turning into an area of strength and that's exciting stuff!

Kind of a nice connection through LRSC, their head coach is a guy I know fairly well in Joe Kittell as I went to college with him here at NDSU and he was part of Miles staff so with touches of Miles system in both places it would likely be smooth transition for him if he'd like to play D1 ball. Personally I'd prefer with one JUCO already signed that we went with a high school prospect but I trust the staff to build this roster.

StarTribune All-Metro Team is out. It includes several players NDSU was (or is) involved with -

JT Gibson - Champlin Park - Metro Player of the year - Omaha commit (NDSU & others offered)

Gibson’s physical skills are more than enough to justify his selection. He’s a terrific slasher who can blow past defenders. He’s a 47-percent shooter from beyond the three-point arc who has an uncanny ability to come up with a clutch basket. He runs the break with precision, passes as well as he shoots (4.5 assists per game) and leads the team in scoring, averaging about 19 points per game.

Champlin Park has plenty of others capable of those types of numbers. All four of the Rebels’ starting guards — seniors Gibson, Marty Hill, Jeremy Johnson and sophomore McKinley Wright (2017 NDSU interest) — would be the linchpin to most high-school offenses. Sophomore forward Theo John (2017 NDSU interest) is a budding talent whose college recruitment is likely to get Tyus Jones-like scrutiny over the next couple of seasons.

http://www.mnbasketballhub.com/news_article/show/488704

Also on the StarTribune All-Metro 1st team:

- Marshawn Wilson - 6' 2" G - Hill-Murray HS - 2015 NDSU interest
offers - Colorado State, Creighton, Illinois State and Northern Iowa

- John Warren - 6' 4" G/F - Hopkins - offer from LIU Brooklyn - 2015 NDSU interest

- Sacar Anin - DeLasalle - Marquette verbal (SDSU, USD, offers among others)

- Steffon Mitchell - 6' 6" F - Shakopee - 2016 NDSU offer -
other offers - SDSU, USD, Furman, Central Michigan and American

Other familiar All-Metro names include 6' 3" Sid Tomes (East Ridge) and 6' 2" Tyler Johnson (2016 Mpls North) on the 3rd team

Theo John - 6' 9" 225 lbs - Champlin Park (MN) - (2017 NDSU interest)
Article on him in the StarTribune, could be a prospect who is already blowing up as a Sophomore

Champlin Park's John wows with big wingspan.....

The sophomore forward stands 6-8, not that unusual for an interior player at a big school. What is remarkable is his wingspan. Measured fingertip-to-fingertip with his arms fully extended, John’s wingspan is 7-4. That’s a full 8 inches longer than the average person, whose wingspan and height are roughly the same.

College recruiters certainly have noticed. A combination of graceful agility and athletic force, John is already the subject of a growing recruiting battle. Minnesota and Wisconsin are already in eager pursuit and, according to John, attention from college coaches has increased throughout the season.

Theo John will start to get quite a few big time offers this summer during the AAU season. Highly doubtful NDSU will have a chance.

On another note from the MN state tournament, I really liked Steffon Mitchell (NDSU 2016 offer) from Shakopee. He was arguably the best player on the court vs Champlin Park in the state semifinals. Champlin had Omaha commit JT Gibson & Theo John.

Deng Geu playing in the SD state championship game right now. Has the first 6 points for the Washington Warriors. Diverse array of baskets, starting with an 18-foot jumper, then a drive across the lane and spin move for a should've-been-and-1 bank shot, then a drive from the top of the key to the basket. Looks like he's going to be a unique (in a good way) player for the Bison in the future. I'd imagine it'll take a year, maybe two, but you'll see flashes as early as his freshman year (or redshirt freshman year) in a Bison uniform, I'm sure.

What happened with Houston Lavachek (JUCO - Williston)? Good size 6'9", can shoot from anywhere (I think he played some guard in high school), and a good inside game as well...who wouldn't want a guy with that size that can do it all? I think we can eliminate any underclassman declaring for the draft which would lead me to believe they want to help a young man transfer out. Sorry if this is unwarranted or uncalled for and feel free to delete this last sentence, but my hunch tells me Showalter to a DIII or JC in Wisconsin.

Well according to this link from the Zak Showalter page http://www.d2messageboard.com/showthread.php?64232-Future-NSIC-Players-(2015-16)/page18 Jake is already confirmed to be leaving. It would make sense as with the depth we have at guard I don't see him getting much playing time and if since he didn't want to redshirt it would seem he had hopes to see minutes right away. If he'd stay I think the best case scenario for him would be if he ended up as a Mike Felt type role player as he can certainly shoot but if playing time is more important then he'll be better off elsewhere. If he is leaving I'm not so sure I buy that we would bring in two JuCo players in the same class, especially with the success we've had signing some guys late and the exposure we just had from being in the tournament could put us in good position to bring in another solid HS player but that remains to be seen I guess.

I agree, don't have a knee jerk reaction and think theres a hurry to fill spot by adding a JUCO player who has two years remaining (UNLESS projected STARTER) when can comb through and possibly use NCAA run to add a HS recruit who can build the program with in time.

I know it's not the Bison way (in either football or basketball) to rely on JUCOs, but only playing 7 guys hurt us at times this year. I am not saying they should sign a JUCO, but losing LA and playing just Miller last year as a freshman, there is a lot of unproven depth after KB, AJ, and Dupree. I will say the Powell kid from LRSC is for real. My guess they want to redshirt Deng and possibly Kabellis.

We already have a JUCO in this class though with Malik Clements coming in. We'll have a nice 4 person rotation with Dupree, KB, Miller and Clements at the 1 & 2 spots so I would prefer to bring in another HS recruit versus another JUCO player we only get a couple years out of. If we could find another solid SG or SF in this class we'd be in real good shape. Of course this is all speculation at this point until we hear something for sure on the Showalter situation.

Just so everyone is aware and to add context, Clements is not your typical JUCO recruit. He was a freshman this year and is coming in as a true sophomore. Hence he has 4 years to play 3. So in other words, NDSU could redshirt Clements (not saying they have any plans to do this...I have no clue on the matter) next year and he would still have 3 more years to play after that.

tolnabison

I know we are bringing in Clements. Doesn't mean we can't bring in another JUCO. I was just passing on information from a very good source that NDSU is interested in Diallo Powell. He has visited campus twice in the past month and wants to be at NDSU. Doesn't mean he will be at NDSU.

Your looking at a guard rotation of: Dupree, Paul Miller, KB, and AJ. We redshirted Trey Miller (who I heard is going to be very good).
Bringing in Kabellis (redshirt candidate) and Clements (4 years to play 3, could redshirt). I wouldn't be shocked if they take a sign another guard whether its a JUCO or high school kid.

I personally would rather see a freshman brought in if they can find one in the late recruiting time here.

He only shot 26% from 3 last year with close to 100 attempts. OUCH that's a lot of wasted trips down the floor. He did shoot 43% from the floor but this was against the likes of Bottineu, United tribes technical college a couple times, Cankdeska a couple times, Trinity bible college, Presentation, Turtle Mountain.

Unless his D is lock down, I am not real excited even if lock down D not real excited.

They list him at 6'3". Here is his highlight tape: http://www.hudl.com/athlete/3303229/diallo-powell

I did see him play against McCloud from Bismarck State last year (plays at Illinois State), Woodard from NDSCS (recently verballed to Tennessee St), and Myers from Williston (who has multiple D-1 offers) this year. He held his own against the top D-1 talent at the JUCO level in ND. I think Diallo biggest strength is he is a defender and his athleticism. He is just scratching the surface offensively. He played the 4 and 5 spot in high school. First time playing guard was his freshman year.

Granted, I am not saying at all that he will end up at NDSU. I am just saying that their is mutual interest from both parties. He is from St. Paul originally.

Rather than just looking at stats, take a look at the video below. The first few minutes is against NDSCS and he is being guarded by Johnny Woodard who is a DI commit.

Is his game perfect, probably not. But the kid is a scorer and with the loss of LA, bringing in people who can put the ball in the bucket is not a bad thing.

Also as the video shows, he is a very good athlete who can get up and get to the rim. You heard Coach Richman say it throughout the season...he likes his team to play "downhill" and Powell is definitely someone who can do that.
