Game one is in the books and the Bison did what they should to an NAIA team and killed them. Next up is Saint Mary's, and there is nothing NAIA about the Gaels. This is a very talented team who over the years has made a good name for its selves as one of the best mid-major teams in the country. The Gaels opened up the season with a 15 point win over a tough Louisiana Tech team and will play Akron tonight (well really tomorrow morning) on ESPN 2 at 2am.

The Bottom Line:

This is a tough one to call, Saint Mary's lost their stud pg from last season but still have a very good team. Waldow is a beast, that is going to be a very fun match up to watch between him and Marshall. The Gaels are like NDSU in the fact they play good fundamental man to man defense. This would be a big win for NDSU if they can get it done. Ill take the bison by 4 (maybe a homer pick) 69-65.

Bison have a bad habit of playing wild when the other team goes on a run, need to settle down and play their game. Don't force the up-tempo if it's not there. Getting killed on the glass 24-12. Gotta clean that up, and the answer is to have Bjorklund in the game. The problem last year was that we kept picking up early fouls and so far that seems to still be a lingering issue. Obviously you want to stay stingy on defense but you can't do it at the expense of playing clean. That said, nice end to the half and maybe that stop and score gives us some momentum in the locker room. If Felt can knock his chances down, we start rebounding and Braun heats up, we're right there. This is a good St. Mary's team, too, and they play well at their house. Let's lock up a nice win here.

From what I'm told the result of a reach or shooting foul does depend on what happens in some cases. It's advantage/disadvantage in those cases so if the shot goes in it's not a foul.

Yes he did have some poor choices, lot of it because we couldn't hit a three to save our lives and his hand was really forced in the first half when Marshall was out and everyone was playing bad.

One positive, Saul seemed to coach his butt off tonight with all those substitutions. Cool that the announcer said he thought Bison were the best of the three tough teams that have come there this year. Like someone said earlier, hopefully by year end we'll be good enough to win this type of game.

Couple things:

1.) I know the refs went nuts in this game but we absolutely have to cut down on the fouls. It's been such a problem the last few years and we just can't afford to have Bjorklund off the floor at the end of each half. A couple charges tonight, some fouls off the ball, you name it. I know this team prides itself on stingy defense but there's a fine line between playing clean and tenacious and playing rough and sloppy. When we find ourselves down a few points near the end of the game it kills us when they can just drive the lane and pick up a foul or handcuff our best inside player with foul trouble.

2.) Bjorklund being off the court for a good portion of the first half probably contributed to the big rebound differential. Didn't see a whole lot of boxing out on the defensive glass and that allowed them to pick up 14 offensive boards. We finished -18 on the night and that's an easy way to get in a hole when they're getting that many extra possessions. Keep Marshall on the floor and box out and we can keep that tighter.

3.) LA picked up his game in the second half nicely. Didn't shoot great to start and did still finish 6-16 on the night but hit some nice shots during that run to bring us close. Have to attribute some of that to opening night nerves away from home, so hopefully he'll settle in and play smart like we know he can. No turnovers from him though, which is great from your point man.

4.) Need Felt to make the most of his chances. He wasn't the only one missing them, but 0-5 from deep from your sixth man isn't going to make the opposing defense second-guess themselves. Of course we know he can heat up in a hurry so maybe it was just an off night with the late game, but in all the team going 1-11 from deep needs to improve. Braun going 0-2 is also uncharacteristic.

5.) REALLY impressed with only 5 turnovers on the road. Those 15+ TO games last year were killer and the boys cleaned it up well. That's going to be a big asset if we can play like that and fix a few other things.

6.) Probably most importantly, we didn't score on our last five trips down the court. Now that this group is full of seniors they need to be able to deliver late and SMC was able to widen the gap considerably down the stretch. Need to keep your composure late and make the clutch basket.

All in all, not a great performance but saw a few nice things that, if polished, could yield some good results. Nice bounce-back opportunity against a pretty good Southern Miss team at home on Monday, win that and we can get some swagger back heading into the two-game road trip. SMC is a good team regardless of what some rubes think, and they'll be right there with some of the best teams in the WCC mixing it up for an NCAA berth. Not the ideal performance, wish we would've won, but an early-season loss is hardly derailing, just disappointing.

The fouling will be an issue all year I think with the rule changes. With everyone. Looking around the landscape of college basketball, some of these games are getting like 55-60 fouls. It's ridiculous. The Seton Hall-Niagara game had over 100 free throws in it (102). That is absurd.

Yea, the hope is when players finally adapt. Right now, everyone is struggling with it and I agree. They better hope players adjust soon or college basketball will hear alot of grumbling. As a Kansas fan, I am already preparing myself for missing the first half of Big Mondays when they follow the slugfest games the big east will put out there.

The leaders are Braun and LA. I think it's pretty evident just watching the game IMO. I could clearly see that last year, and it was even more noticeably when Braun was hurt. Basketball is a different culture than football. Just because the team isn't swinging elbows and pushing guys around doesn't mean they aren't trying or being aggressive or want to win.

I really like your passion CAS, but I'm sorry, I just don't agree with your rationale of why the Men's basketball program is an "embarrassment".

It's unfortunate. The players are great guys. They want to win for the fans, and they want to win for NDSU. They know the fanbase loves the football team because the football team wins and instills pride in all of NDSU. They want more than anything to give that same pride to the basketball fanbase. They want more than anything to get NDSU back on the radar. These aren't selfish me first guys were talking about. Their busting their ass, they have pride and they want fans to have pride, and they want it for NDSU more than anything. Basketball is a different culture. It isn't a sprint it's a marathon, and for NDSU the end of season and Summit tournament is the pinnacle of what they are working for, to give pride to NDSU just like the football team.

Braun said in the press conference after losing in the Summit title game last year that the team will win it all this year. He busted his ass all offseason so he can back that statement up. What more do you want in a leader?

At the end of the game, the ball needs to be in LA's hands, with Braun moving w/o the ball to get open for shots. Braun had about 3-4 empty trips at the end of the game, where he just took the ball the whole time and didn't give it up while everyone stood around. When he presses at the end of games, it does not help the team.

It's unfortunate. The players are great guys. They want to win for the fans, and they want to win for NDSU. They know the fanbase loves the football team because the fanbase wins. About the fouls.....Coaches knew the rule changes were coming. It's going to be pretty obvious which coaches practiced and prepared their teams to play better defense with their feet and not their hands. Rotations are going to get extended so depth or lack of depth is going to be exposed for some teams too.

The MAIN THREE played pretty solid---Bjorklund, Braun, and Alexander---how far this team eventually depends on the "Others" stepping up and making plays. Trayvon played defense but little on offense, same for Kory, and when our specialist goes 0-5 from three we are not going to beat many good teams. It also hurt that Kading got into foul trouble. I am more concerned in DEVELOPING a bench and not just guys that give our starters a rest. NEED them to score; I though Carlin was going to play last night??
