Injured Player, Medical Bills

In general, who covers the cost of an injury that occurred during a game? An ACL surgery?

Player's private insurance? What if family has none?

School's?

Not employees, so not Worker's compensation.

Just never seen the question asked before.

The school covers it in one way or another, if I am correct it would come from the athletic departments insurance.

The NCAA requires the schools to take steps to ensure that athletes are covered. If an athlete is not covered under their parent's policy, there is group insurance available. Every article I've seen on the issue dodges the question of who pays for the coverage.

There is catastrophic coverage when costs exceed $75,000 for schools participating in group coverage and $90,000 for all others.

Wow, does the school at least cover the parents out of pocket expense. How long has it been this way, it was not like that in the mid 80's

This is how it was done/handled when I was at NDSU. My parents' family plan was primary, with NDSU's policy being secondary. meaning it took care of uncovered expenses.

I don't remember using my parents insurance, and I think NDSU took care of everything when I had a couple of pins inserted in my thumb (yes, even us non-recruited, lowly "walk-ons during the 1st week of school" scout teamer's were taken care of by NDSU).

I got stitches, MRI's, Neurologist visits. I don't think my parents ever saw a thing come their way.
