Senior College Football Columnist Dennis Dodd, who recently had NDSU at #19 in his Power Poll (http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/writer/dennis-dodd/24147886/power-poll-top-4-hold-firm-as-stretch-run-for-unbeatens-looms-large), wrote a great article on Bison

I think Patty V. loves us. It's the MVC and its commissioner Doug Elgin that don't seem to care for us. When the MVC added Loyola to the conference he made it a point to say that they were not recruiting any "football schools" for the opening. Apparently he doesn't want to upset the balance of power between the football and basketball-centric schools in the conference.

I though Patty V didn't like us either. I swear I remember when we first got into the MVFC the league and commissioner didn't want the newbies to be successful. That was followed by the "refs were paid to make sure we don't have success in the MVFC" theory.

I think we would have been hard pressed to get in the MVFC if the commissioner herself wasn't behind us. I am guessing she was the one that negotiated with some of the schools to alternate schedules so they only have come out to the Dakota's once a year.

Some fans think she doesn't like us because she suspended Pat Paschal for a game and not the UNI player. I am thinking she was just doing her job.

My 2 cents.

Patty V. seems most enamored with our drinking abilities. :)

"They run out of beer wherever their fans go," Viverito said."

"We've never experienced such friendly drunks," Viverito recalled being told by one of those officials."

Two years ago, she [Viverito] ventured to Fargo for a December playoff game. Taylor had invited some neighbors who brought some of their home brew, Wood Chipper Beer.

"They play hard, they work hard," Viverito said."

Patty and Douple work together, she fought to get us and SDSU in the MVFC

yes it's Elgin of the MVC. they would rather have schools like Loyola, UIC than State Schools

Nobody said NDSU could beat top tier FBS teams.... everyone agrees that the Bison would be a reasonably successful middle of the FBS pack (probably regular Bowl participants) team. So the rub for these FBS teams is that they are hallmarked as a middle of the pack team or less if they play the Bison and lose.

A pep rally at nearby Dr. Pepper Ballpark was filled to capacity, 10,000 fans. There was one stipulation: They couldn't go on the field. After buying up a load of merchandise -- and beer -- a stadium official promised they could have the run of the place the next time.

Does this mean they would give us the ballfield also? Would be nice not to have the concourse so crowded.

Arguing about the real name of NDSU? Giving in to their statement that NDSU wouldn't be a top 25 FBS team? (Last week, Oregon State was #25 and I think NDSU would mop the field with the Beavers.) (heck, EWU beat them).

I personally think that NDSU could compete with and beat most teams in FBS on a given day, sans some exceptions (Oregon, Alabama, etc.). However, when it comes to saying that NDSU would be a middle of the pack team in some of the BCS conferences, my question is this - while NDSU can compete with and beat a lot of those teams, given a full schedule of them would they be able to keep it up through the year? I'm talking the team as it currently stands, not with 22 more scholarships. Reason I ask is I have some Bison friends who think that with the current team that NDSU would be top half of some of the bigger conferences. What say you??

This year? Maybe. We're loaded with experience. And we've been very fortunate this far with regard to injuries, etc. I think year in year out, we'd be at a significant disadvantage with 22 fewer scholarships though. We may still be able to finish at 0.500 many years, but not compete for the top half most years.

anyone with a brain realizes a full SEC schedule would kill is if any injuries occur, would we beat Bama. who knows, was Florida Gulf Coast supposed to make the Sweet 16 last year?

fact is we are 4-0 against BCS teams, crappy or not everyone including the shit spewing fans on SS thought we would get rolled. You can't deny we would play or beat 75% of the teams out of the top 30.

A lot of that would come down to injuries without the additional 22 scholarships. If we have a Georgia-esque injury year, we would be completely destroyed. If we would remian relatively healthy and get very lucky, I think we could be in the top half of most of the conferences. Remember, some of these FBS games would be back at our house instead of always on the road. Below is where I think we would sit this year

AAC (10 teams) - 4-5
ACC (14 teams) - 6-7
Big 12 (10 teams) - 6
B1G (12 teams) - 6-7
Conf USA (14 teams) - 1
MAC (13 teams) - 1-3
MWC (12 teams) - 1-3
Pac 12 (12 teams) - Anywhere from 4-10. Hardest conference to judge this year
SEC (14 teams) - 9-11
Sun Belt (8 teams) - 1

IMO, the CURRENT team is deep enough and experienced enough to play a schedule like that and be middle of the pack in most of the better conferences. No way could we do that consistently from year to year with 63 scholarships.

Too many people fail to understand that games are not won simply on athleticism and measurables. Teams win games by executing and avoiding mistakes. This Bison team excels in both areas AND we play a style of football that keeps us in games and gives us a chance to win against almost any opponent (the obvious exceptions apply).

I always cringe when I see a "bring on Bama" sign. I hope most fans are doing this as a joke and they really aren't serious. Having said that, I'd also be the first to argue that a matchup like that would not likely be the blowout that many skeptics like to predict.

I must be in the minority on this. If NDSU's football team played a full FBS schedule, I don't think that there'd be any more injuries than there already are. The problem would be mental. NDSU gets up for FBS games and usually plays at a very high level. It'd be very difficult to maintain that level through a 9-game, conference schedule.

bisonaudit

Plenty of room for judgement. It's anyone's guess what would happen playing a BCS level schedule and how depth would play out as the season wore on.

Just for reference here's what Sagarin thinks:

NDSU's 77.68 would rank:

3rd in the American Athletic (=0 from last week)
6th in the ACC (=0)
5th in the Big Ten (+3)
7th in the Big 12 (+1)
1st in Conference USA (=0)
1st in the MAC (=0)
3rd in the MWC (=0)
10th in the PAC 12 (=0)
10th in the SEC (=0)
1st in the Sun Belt (=0)

If anyone is interested in how this has changed as the season's progressed, it's been tracked week by week on the Sagarin Says thread.

I agree with this, especially for a team with as much experience as we have. I don't think injuries are a function of who we're playing as much as the individual and team preparations (conditioning and knowing fundamentals and how to be in position, etc.)

I think it really depends on which conference you are talking about. This years team I think could do well(top 1/2 to top 1/3rd) in the Big 12 or Big 10 because I don't think those conferences play great defense. The SEC would be a completely different story though and NDSU's offense would struggle. I would guess in the SEC NDSU would be in the bottom 1/3rd. The other thing to consider would be if NDSU was in these conferences they would get home games instead of playing on the road like they have for past FBS games which would help. It is fun to talk about but in the end we can't draw any firm conclusions.

This is why I asked how many guys we played against KSU vs. how many KSU played. As I recall, we played a total of 46 and they played a total of 42-43, yet claimed to have way more depth then us, and that they would wear us down.

I also think that 23 more scholarships is a burden to how NDSU would do a level up..obviously the team plays fantastic and it trickles down. there isnt a losing atmosphere in this years bison team. Most FCS teams would roll over and quit after being down to KState, and some would being down to UNI...not this team.

Most FCS teams would roll over and quit after being down to KState, and some would being down to UNI...not this team.

Until someone convinces me otherwise, I think we would fair better against Alabama, a team that has a similar playing style than we would against a team like Oregon or aTm. I'm not seeing we would beat any of them I just think it would be a closer game with Alabama.

Just wait until we get matched up with one of the Big Sky teams in the playoffs and you will see why. Much easier for a great, sound defense to shut down a high scoring offense than it is the other way around

Someone should tell Eastern Washington that it sells tickets.

It's fun to joke at the low turn out of other FCS programs as the Bison have recently had such great turnout, but for the FCS as a whole it's concerning that other programs with good facilities and teams have a tough time turning out fans.

They could barely sell out half the stadium the week after they beat #25 Oregon State. It was a D-II team, but still coming off one of their biggest wins ever.

Fans are strange to figure out sometimes. Hell, the week after we had at the time one of our biggest wins in school history when we beat the Gophers in 2007, the next week against S. Utah had a couple thousand empty seats.

That thread is epic. I understand that they would be butthurt. I did not think it would make them irrational. I'm a bit disappointed that our posters seem so quick to get distracted by the bait that fools like Daryl, hayduke, and Volley throw in the water.

Arguing about the real name of NDSU? Giving in to their statement that NDSU wouldn't be a top 25 FBS team? (Last week, Oregon State was #25 and I think NDSU would mop the field with the Beavers.) (heck, EWU beat them).

That board is supposedly smack free? Good grief. What a joke.
They act like Bison fans wrote the article thereby making it biased. The article is an independent opinion by a reputable sportswriter and that is what they can't handle.

Holy crap, it's Birdemic!

(Seriously, everyone should watch that movie once. More than once could result in permanent brain damage. Much like watching a game on the tampon turf.)

If you took the first sentence out of you post, I'd swear that it was cut and pasted from Gopherhole from the fall of 2011.

I believe that was hunting opener. That has always delivered more empties than normal.

Also when these other schools are saying they have to fight against the big schools for fans, it's very true. UNI has nobody because Iowa and ISU are playing at the same time. EWU has the same thing. Who do we fight against for fans?? UND, Concordia, Moorhead State, the closest one would be the Gophs and they are 4 hrs away.

In the picture? Or in real life in Cheney? The answer to the second question is rather obvious.

on the left by the stairs

Stairs?

Although, it would be funny if she thought those lines painted on the pavement were stairs, and when she went to step up, she tripped and fell into the street.

Also, if they were stairs, it would be fun to watch that Cadillac drive across them.
