Twenty years ago today, the Bison played their first football game in the Fargodome.

The game against Pittsburg State was highly anticipated by fans because NDSU lost to Pitt State in the second round of the playoffs the year before in Pittsburg KS by a score of 37-38.

NDSU beat Pitt State by a score of 35-16 in front of 18,059 fans. Unfortunately the most common thing remembered from that first Fargodome game was the career ending knee injury to Bison QB Arden Beachy.

I was there. I'm pretty sure they gave us students T-shirts that said Thunder zone.

Didn't they give out a pennant too like they did for the last game at Dacotah?

I was at that Pitt State game too. For having 18,000+ there, the volume in the Dome was nowhere near what it is now. I am ecstatic that NDSU fans have finally found their voice for home games.

If that was the game Arden was hurt in, then I was there too. I remember that too clearly to have just heard about it.....I just had no idea that was the first game!

Wasn't there but did watch it on TV. I'm not sure where NDSU was ranked going into that game but they were definitly national title contenders that year. Beachy going down ended that talk quickly. It is amazing how far the dome atmosphere has come since then. Heck, look how far it has come in the past 5 years.

Coming from the south stands of Dacotah, the atmosphere just felt horrible. Sadly, it went downhill from there.

How's the dome now compared to the south stands? I only Sat in the north stands of Dacotah field plus I was too young to care about atmosphere.

Also...is this the same Arden Beachy?

There were three of us down at Creighton University for our freshman year, we were pumped 'cause a copy of the game was going to be mailed to us. We knew what happened, and still watched. It was like a horror movie, we knew Beachy was going to get hurt but we just didn't know when.

The student section is better now in most ways, but I sure miss the south stand thunder and kickoff kickdown.

The atmosphere is way better now in the Fargodome than it used to be, and the crowd sizes are more consistent. Still missing something at times though.

I have to agree with this. The dome is loud, but I have yet to experience the same crowd vibe of when those south stands would absolutely sound like a jet engine on a frigid winter day.

I thought my Fargo people would like to know about this fact but it was met with unexpected hostility....I guess Bisonville is just ahead of the curve when it comes to online etiquette :(

Watched that game on youtube about a year ago, that team looked damn good. Scares me to think that sometimes one dude going down can derail a season.

I don't remember the games being as loud as today. Maybe there is more intensity being at a higher level.

If the game that is to never happen actually happens, we should find a deal like the link below. Problem is there is no place to have it since the above. Anyplace that can hold more than the dome if we get creative?

And very little green or gold in the stands! I always wore an NDSU shirt and baseball cap to the games when I had season tickets in 1994.

Looks photshopped to me. I wonder if this could be a crucial piece of evidence in the case CAS and UTH were trying to resolve just the other day?

No it's legit from the fox slideshow. I've seen it before where people use a special technique or lens to get that effect.

I know it is from the show, but it is a real picture of the stadium? I have trouble believing that......looks like legos or something.

That's because you sat with the students back then and now you sit with old farts. If you would sit in the student section now you would probably think its as loud
