Already noticing some neat articles giving major props to NDSU. Common theme is FBS teams should stop scheduling NDSU.

Most teams want to play good teams. Others like to play cupcakes. We scheduled Georgia Southern, Montana State, and Montana for our home non conference home games. Those games are tougher than many teams cupcake openers.

LOL did you notice how they "filed" it under "Gophers" man must suck to have a crappy NCAA football team that you have to live vicariously through the FCS team down the interstate!

Listening to Dari and Mel on ESPN this morning and they are giving the game a lot of attention. The gist of what they've said is this is not a huge surprise. While the casual fan may think it's a major upset and a black mark on the Big XII, they said knowledgeable football fans know the Bison are a good football team and K State has 9 new starters on defense and they are replacing a Heismann candidate at QB. Kiper said the Bison have several players who are getting serious looks by NFL scouts. He also said several times if they were in any of the BCS conferences they would not be at the bottom of the standings.

This year, with the turmoil to the CAA, SoCon, Big Sky, and Southland line-ups, is there a better comparison? Five teams (out of 10) in the top 25,

ESPN just had the KSU alumni picking games, so roasted him a bit about the NDSU win.

Congrats Bison! That's a topnotch team up in Fargo.

USA Today sports editor uses NDSU win as a preface for his argument that FCS - BCS matchups will be going away. He says FCS hurt attendance and will lower SOS for 'playoff' consideration in future years. Of course he disregards that the game was the 2nd most highly attended in their history and NDSU finished last year 35th in their own Sagarin ratings .

North Dakota State, a football team the big boys of college football should avoid like the plague, helped christen a $90 million renovation to Snyder Family Stadium — including a statue of famed Kansas State coach Bill Snyder himself — by taking a sledgehammer to the place.

Craig Haley on The Sports Network:

"The offensive line can't get enough credit for how top-ranked North Dakota State has become the pre-eminent power in the FCS (two straight national titles, four straight wins over FBS opposition). The Bison big boys, led by 6- foot-6, 314-pound left tackle Billy Turner, are a treat to watch as they crash up the field and make opposing defenders look small, if not overmatched. The Bison chewed up 215 yards on the ground in their 24-21 win over Kansas State."

Big Ten discourages football teams from playing lower-division schools (http://www.inforum.com/event/article/id/411023/group/homepage/)

Nothing really that we haven't heard before, but now the Big Ten quotes are from after upset weekend. The result is the story and quotes seem to have an odor about them. Something almost bovine. With more than a hint of digestive product.

"I think before programs move in that direction, you really need to take a look and say, okay, what are the different resources that the program has, how are you positioned, are you really capable of making a move as opposed to changing the letters from 'FCS' to 'FBS.' There needs to be other significant changes as well."

64. KANSAS STATE (0–1). I'm still a little bit wary of the people who actually predicted an upset by North Dakota State over the defending Big 12 champs, but in K-State's defense I am willing to believe that the shocker of the weekend says a lot more about the Bison than it does about their latest victims. For one, there have been others: Kansas in 2010, Minnesota in 2011, Colorado State in 2012, all practice runs for the big kill. For another, North Dakota State is just pretty damn good. Just a few years removed from "provisional" status, the Bison have won back-to-back FCS titles on the back of a dominant defense, one that's held eight playoff opponents over the last two years to 8.8 points per game. (The highest-scoring FCS team in the nation in both of those seasons, Sam Houston State, managed six points in the 2011 championship game and 13 in last year's rematch.) The upset in Manhattan looked a lot like a vintage K–State ambush, especially the winning drive, an 18-play, 80-yard march that snuffed out the final nine minutes of the game. If you can imagine a more fitting name than "Brock Jensen" for the quarterback who somehow out-tortoised Bill Snyder, I'd like to hear it.

Anyway, this is the part where everyone writes off Kansas State as marginally talented frauds getting a long-overdue dose of reality until we look up in a couple months and realize the Wildcats have won like eight in a row.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Even the fans are being asked to practice for North Dakota State football.

The NDSU student government is sponsoring yell practice to help teach Bison cheers and traditions. The home opener for the defending Football Championship Subdivision team opens is scheduled Saturday against Ferris State.

People scheduled to appear at the event are NDSU President Dean Bresciani, Bison quarterback Brock Jensen, and student yell leaders Alex Koppy, Stephen Kessler and Brandon Miller.

The yell leaders wear yellow suits and lead the cheers at each home game.

Yell practice is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Fargodome.

So did the fishwrap in Sodak: http://www.argusleader.com/viewart/20130904/SPORTS/309040050/NDSU-sets-yell-practice-advance-home-opener

Seems that ANY story about NDSU this week is worthy of printing, and that's a good thing!!

Totally forgot about that....hope the guy succeeds on this team. His story is pretty interesting.

It's actually on another island than the one that he is from.

Have seen references to CB's NYT's interview, but hadn't seen the article anywhere.

PSA: The picture at the beginning of the article may be offensive to some viewers.

Love the comment by Saul referenced in one of the post-win tweets:

I asked the North Dakota State basketball coach last year if they flew commercial to Akron. He goes, "What, do you think we took a wagon?"

Honestly, I sure as heck did not like being compared to a MAC team. That is friggin insulting. Why anyone views the MAC as a "step up" is beyond me; 22 more scholies alone does not mean a "step up."

I think it was meant as a point of reference for Big 10 folks. "Hey these guys aren't some podunk Jr. College team, they have real talent and heart." Talent that often beats Big 10 schools. He is also giving the impression that our program could consistently compete at that level. If he came out and said, "Hey these guys can compete in the Big 10", its would be a bunch of bull, because we don't have the resources the BCS conference teams do. I take it as a complement to our program that he feels we are at that level. (A conference that sent a team to the Orange Bowl by the way.)

Mandel also mentioned NDSUs win in his mailbag this week, not sure if this has been posted or not:

So, North Dakota State just knocked off the defending Big 12 champ. Are you some sort of psychic?
-- Justin, Wichita Falls, Kan.

Did you consider retiring immediately after North Dakota State beat Kansas State, so you could have gone out like JohnElway at the top of his game?
-- John Hillburg, Mount Prospect, Ill.

The better analogy would be George Costanza going out on a high note, and yes, it was quite tempting. There's probably no pick I could make over the next 14 weeks that would top that one, but plenty that will make everyone forget it ever happened.

Also, my record for the weekend was 12-1. If we could just end this thing now, I'd be assured a BCS berth.

Yet another mention in his mailbag:

If there's one thing that really sets college football apart from the NFL, it's the amount of underdogs even a general fan can pull for on any given Saturday. The fact that eight FCS programs scored wins over FBS programs in Week 1 was something most fans are celebrating (outside of Manhattan, Kan., etc.). Yet the wins also come at a time in which we've never heard more about the "haves" of the FBS breaking away from the NCAA. My fear is that such a scenario would destroy the uniqueness of what we saw on Saturday by virtually excluding the kinds of scheduling moves that make FCS upsets possible.
-- Adam Nettina, Ellicott City, Md.

I addressed this notion a bit in College Football Overtime. The general sentiment surrounding the sport this offseason was that major programs should schedule fewer FCS opponents -- if not eliminate them altogether (as Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany is encouraging of his schools) -- both to placate fans tired of buying tickets to unappealing games and to beef up schedules for the new selection committee. But the power-conference schools all want to play at least seven, if not eight, home games a year, and they can't achieve that solely by playing each other. It's prohibitively more expensive to schedule a low-level FBS opponent (where the paycheck for a one-off game is around $1 million) than it is to schedule an FCS foe (less than $500,000). If you eliminate the FCS option entirely, those FBS games would become even more expensive.

At the same time, the Big Ten is joining the Big 12 and Pac-12 in moving to a nine-game league schedule, and despite the protestations of its coaches, I believe the SEC will eventually follow suit (for the sake of the forthcoming SEC Network). So there will soon be fewer dates to fill. My guess is schools will be more selective about which programs they face, and the total number of FBS-FCS games will decrease, but they won't go away entirely and the Cinderella possibility will remain. What schools really ought to be doing is stop treating FCS as one enormous league and recognize that, just like in FBS, some programs and conferences are stronger than others. It's cool to see the defending FCS national champ play a BCS bowl team like North Dakota State did Kansas State. Meanwhile, Florida State and Oklahoma State beating up on de facto NAIA program Savannah State last year was a waste of everyone's time.
