Dedicated to DI conference tournaments - primarily to track what is happening in mid major conferences.

To start off, UWGB beat UW Milwaukee in the first round of the Horizon tournament. Green Bay didn't have a fantastic season, but they did beat a ranked Marquette team and a solid Bison team this year. Both wins were at home.

Youngstown State and Illinois-Chicago also advanced in the Horizon.

green bay has been hot lately and playing very well. theyve won 6 of last 9. our loss to them doesnt look as bad as it did a month ago. some experts thinks they have a shot at winning the horizon. detroit will probably end up winning it though. ray mccalum is a stud.

I didn't realize McCallum was a 4* recruit until the other day. I thought maybe he was one of those coaches kids that flew under the radar and has just recently made some hay. Either way, he is fun to watch.

With the upsets so far in the Sun Belt, Metro Atlantic, and America East Conferences, I think NDSU or SDSU could sneak into a 13 seed if they win the Summit Tourney. A Lafayette victory over Bucknell in the Patriot League Championship and/or a College of Charleston victory over Davidson in the Southland Championship would really help as well.

Someone other than Montana or Weber St. out of the Big Sky would help as well.

Some moron on Mad Dog Radio was complaining about Liberty getting into the tournament. He was saying that it would be terrible if Liberty cost Kentucky a spot. Good grief. Liberty took a spot away from Charleston Southern. That's it. One of those two teams was getting in.

Sounds like the MVC Commissioner is PISSED that some markets cut away from the end of the Title game to show the start of a B1G game. CBS had the game after purchasing it from ESPN?

Probably a good thing that Fox and NBC are getting into the market to force some competition.

BTW, I really liked MidCo's coverage of the tourney and their Summit-related programming. Nicely done. Heck, they're doing a spring football wrap-up too for NDSU, SDSU, UND, and USD. The only quibble I have is, holy crap, is the broadcast quality terrible on FCS-Atlantic. It wasn't even standard def... it was "streaming from gobison.com to my TV using my smartphone" def. Was the MidCo picture quality that terrible or was that Fox dialing down the bandwidth? When they did the two-minute split screen between game action and Ceola Clark sitting on the bench with a towel over his head, it was almost impossible to make out the basketball.

and Tubby/Minnesota are outted in round 1 in typical Minnesota sports fashion.

game tied, Minnesota has ball with 8 seconds on shot clock, 16 left in game...inbound, Hollins falling out of bounds steps out and tries throwing the ball off the defender...so either way it was going to be a turnover on Minnesota.

Brandon Paul nails a buzzer beater.

Unbelievable ending to Charlotte-Richmond game. For those who say you should always foul the ball when up by 3, this game is a good example of what can go wrong. Granted I doubt this will happen very often but Charlotte ended up getting 11 free throws with only 2 seconds off the clock and scored 8 points to win by 5. They are the worst 3-point shooting team in the conference and had missed every attempt in this game.

I had Miles pegged as a big time coach some day when he was at Mayville State. Every place he has been he not only gets a team moving in the right direction, he leaves them in exponentially better shape from where he finds them. We should have pulled a chapman and picketed his house and had a pep rally when he was courted by others.

Who are coaches you would take before Bo Ryan who have not won the national championship?

Rick Barnes reaching the final 4 automatically renders that stat worthless.

I lost all respect for Barnes when he said that you don't design an offense around Kevin Durrant. Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, ok.

So because he didnt recruit all 13 of his players you wouldn't take him over Bo? How many final fours do each have?

Bradley Stevens
Mark Few
Shaka Smart
Tim Miles
Fred Hoiberg
Buzz Williams
Thad Matta
I like Josh Pastner
maybe John Thompson although hes kind of the same as Bo
that's just the top of my head.

Bo is 65 and one elite eight and plays a boring style of bball thatll never win a natty. THe ones i listed above are younger and just as accomplished as Bo but actually have a chance at carrying their team far

Tim izzo likes to play that style... I would take Bo Ryan over all of those coaches. Thad Matta couldn't win a title with Greg Oden and Mike Conley, yet you're giving Bo Ryan crap when he overachieves every year with guys that aren't highly recruited

MNLonghorn10
03-17-2013, 03:50 PM
So bo ryan has proven he'll never win a national championship but you'd still take him over a plethora of young coaches I just listed who all have higher chances of winning than Bo?

Yea, and Florida was loaded that year when Oden and Connely were there. God forbid losing to 4 lottery picks who just won it all the year before.

Smart's a fine young coach, but he took over an already ranked mid major program and was asked don't screw it up.

Bradley Stevens is the only one on that list that even has an argument, but then again, he beats up on low level teams most of the year, ala Saul Phillips at NDSU. I guess his tournament success is a separation certainly. He also missed the tournament completely last year, and couldn't even qualify for the NIT.

Love Tim Miles, but he has been beaten up badly in the Big 10, where Ryan has succeeded. Completely subjective argument.

Fred Hoiberg? Buzz WIlliams? Mark Few? John Thompson? And your argument against Bo is lack of tournament success? That knocks these guys right off the list. Before Bo Ryan. I really find it crazy that you put Mark Few on the list, as everyone who watches March knows Gonzaga underachieves in every tournament, every year.

Josh Pastner and Shaka Smart both took over programs that were already established at their level, and was basically asked to not screw it up. They don't even have their full recruiting teams yet. Mark Few also took over an already established program, but considering he's been there longer than 3 years, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt in sustaining a program.

Thad Matta would maybe be the closest subjective coach, but considering he coaches at Ohio State which recruits himself, has the choice of any top 50 athletes, and has not won a championship yet, makes me think less of him.
You're last sentence completely threw me off, when you said your opinion based on the teams playing style. I was talking about an objective look at coaches who have been established and have not won a championship.

Other than Thad Matta who has had better tournament success (although he has missed the NCAA tournament and Ryan never has), Ryan has a better tournament resume than everyone you have listed.

I disagree and think Ryan's the best coach in college basketball to not have won, but to each his own.

Florida was coached up. They didn't even have a blue chip player, or a top 75 recruit. None of those guys on that team were top recruits, or anywhere close to the level of Ohio State's players coming into college. That just means how much of a better coach Donovon is then Matta.

I would think Smart and Brad Stevens would be right up there.

Those would be my top 2 candidates to replace Self.

theyre not firing him. In fact, the AD, whos as incompetent as Barnes and Brown, has said he's praised Barnes with his work with such young players.

Plenty of bad offense in every game I watched.

Carolina was down 3 with about 3 minutes left and made a good stop on defense. Their response? Dribble and pass around the arc and fail to even get a shot off. Just horrible.

They need to trim at least five seconds off the shot clock, that won't solve the problem but it is a start in the right direction.

Always seems like the Summit gets the toughest draws. Keith Benson taking on Tristan Thompson 2 years ago was like the worst draw for OU possible. Kansas with Aldrich with us was awful as well. Whatever I guess.

I think SDSU can make a game out of it like they did vs Baylor last year. Just cant get cold from 3.

If Wolters can keep dishing out assists like he did against us, to keep Michigan honest, I think SDSU has a chance. And then to play the winner of VCU/Akron for a birth to the sweet 16? I think there's a decent possibility of shocking the basketball world.

i would lie to see it at 30. i think 24 would be a bit too much and i think it would much some teams at a big disadvantage against top teams if it were at 24
