With the Bracketbuster selection around and our team representing so very well in all these ratings I thought it might be fun to track where we go the rest of the season in these ratings. It's simply amazing how high we are in the Sagarin and KenPom ratings right now, ahead of some very good programs including some teams in the top 25.

KenPom:
NDSU: 37
WIU: 139
SDSU: 141

Sagarin:
NDSU: 47
WIU: 131
SDSU: 151

BPI:
NDSU: 73
WIU: 111

I don't understand how we can be so high. Is it because we lost to two Big 10 teams? SDSU beat New Mexico and they are that much lower than we are?

I'm happy, but confused.

It basically comes down to efficiency, our defense is playing ridiculous right now and our offense is 25th in the nation in FG%. At least this is from the best way I can understand it anyway.

Our offense sucks. We don't set enough screens. At least that is what I read on bisonville.

NDSU: 3 losses
SDSU: 6 losses

SDSU lost to a team we beat by 26. SDSU beat a team we beat by 20 on a buzzer beater. SDSU lost to a 4-11 HOfstra team and they lost by 27 to Belmont. Two of our three losses were to top 10 teams in the country. SDSU should be ranked much lower than us, seems pretty obvious to me.

That and two of our three losses came on the road against teams which nobody would be surprised to see reach the elite 8 or beyond. So, in essence, those two losses came in games which literally any other team in the nation would expect to win.

You have to admit there is some truth to this?

Win a game, fall in the rankings. Unfortunately I think this will be how the rest of our season will go. We did move up in BPI though. Previous ranking in ()

ESPN's Daily RPI is what I've been looking at. (Since it's ESPNU Bracektbusters that I started this for, figured that's the one I'd use)

I think something is off with their RPI...basically every other site has us at 49.

Well another W, another fall in the rankings. Oakland's SOS would have been a huge boost for NDSU and for the Summit League if they could have got a W or 2 against the tough competition, but they didn't.

KenPom: 51 (45)
Sagarin: 56 (52)
BPI: 59 (59)
ESPN RPI: 62 (60)

Yeah it going to continue to fall with the SL teams, hopefully we can stay hot and draw a good bracket buster match-up.

Just looking the some of other Summit teams and WIU didn't play a single high major team this year...no wonder their RPI is so bad.

Unforunately, the undies slipped to 304 in the Sagarin.

Well a big W on the road in conference without our leading scorer apparently is weighted rather heavily in the Kenpom and Sagarin ratings as we saw a nice jump in those ratings. Tomorrow nights game is the last one before the selection for Bracketbusters, a W to put us 2 games ahead in the Summit and to be at 17-3 SHOULD get us a televised game and a solid opponent. Really hoping for a W tomorrow.

We are up to 28th in the KenPom rankings, pretty impressive.

Im almost positive we will be getting a TV game for bracketbusters, if they were picked today we would probably be playing Wichita State Shockers.

The Bison played Wichita State a couple years ago I think. Lost of course, but I think it was respectable.

Wichita State just beat Creighton and would be very tough matchup.

Even after the loss our RPI is 53....SDSU is at 60.

Do you think these will help the Summit Leagues seeding? Maybe a 12 or 13 seed rather than the more common 14.

NDSUstudent
01-20-2013, 07:32 PM
I'd say a 12 seed is possible for NDSU or SDSU but the margin for error is very slim. WIU's schedule is way too soft to get there though, they'd have to run the table.

Really good year to be a road team, outside of Tennessee State I'd love a game with any of the top 100 RPI teams.

Our NCAA RPI actually went from 54 last week to 53 this week....our non-conference opponents must have had a pretty good week. SDSU went from 81 to 61.

The loss no doubt hurt us a little, but WIU's strong record even against a weak schedule didn't hurt as bad as it could have. I'm not sure about the Kenpom and Sagarin, but the BPI takes into account our missing TB so that's why the loss didn't hurt us much in that ranking. Our RPI is getting a boost thanks to the teams we've played in Minnesota and Indiana continuing to play strong boosting our SOS. Could really use a W this week against SDSU, but on the road without TB it will be very very tough no doubt. Nice part is with the Bracketbuster selection show getting moved back to February 4th, we can get a couple of wins at home against UMKC and USD before the selections are made. I'm a little concerned if we lose at SDSU this week combined with the loss at WIU that we may cost ourselves a shot at a televised game especially since Braun will likely still be out, top players injured is bad for TV. I still think we are easily one of the top 26 teams in the Bracketbuster field so hopeful we still make the cut, but a huge W this Saturday should lock it up. Hope the boys come out PO'd about the loss and roll the Jacks.

Sagarin would not account for the loss of a player unless he's doing something completely different for basketball than he does for football.

The loss of a player should never be considered unless its a 1 person team. That is a moral evalutation, not actual. Just like some skools try to use moral victories...no names :)

Well after reading how they use it for BPI I'm less of a fan of it.

"*Top players are the five players with highest MPG that have played at least half the team's games this season." - ESPN

So basically any starter misses and it changes the weight of the game. Problem is it goes by minutes played not stat lines so losing Kory Brown who scores 4.2 PPG & 3.1 RPG is weighted the same as losing Braun at 15.2 PPG & 5 RPG. Of course our team is a bad example because everybody has a role and Kory's is not to score but take a team like SDSU or Creighton where guys like Wolters or McDermott being out would be weighted the same as any other starter on their teams where they are head and shoulders above the rest of their team.

Well here we go! Final stretch before the Bracketbuster selection show, although we've fallen in all the rankings, we still lead the Summit in all of them even after losses to SDSU and WIU, but need a couple solid wins this week to guarantee ourselves a great matchup. This should be by far the best game we've gotten in the Bracketbuster so far and what's more exciting is we get that team at home next year. Here's how we stand:

KenPom: 52 (38)
Sagarin: 79 (54)
BPI: 67 (59)
ESPN RPI: 64 (60)

Well we have made it to the Bracketbuster Selection day. Got a big boost back up in the Kenpom ratings after a couple wins last week, but with very weak opponents our RPI took a little bit of a hit. Excited to see who we get and will be really disappointed if we aren't on TV, I think we've positioned ourselves to get a televised game. Selection show is at 5:30 tonight, I'll be tuning in.

KenPom: 34 (52)
Sagarin: 75 (79)
BPI: 61 (67)
ESPN RPI: 74 (64)
