Sad to hear. I started in the AT program and 2 things I remember him teaching: 1) What the word assume really stands for: ASS-U-ME 2) Kids throwing curveballs is compatible to turning a round door knob; it's the OVERUSE of the curveball that causes the damage.

Izzy influenced so many people in the most positive of ways. He taught me loyalty, respect, perserverence, compassion for athletes and others, and so many other things. He is a huge reason that NDSU athletics in where it is at today.

My mentor, my friend, my humblest of role models. Rest in peace Dr. Isrow.

My favorite memory of Izzy was him making the FB players in dance class dance together....something like Wade Kittleson and Pete Campion doing the foxtrot was enough to bring a smile to your face. If anyone bleeds green and gold it was this man. RIP Izzy you will be missed.

I will never forget the man!! It was a tough love thing for him. One of my fondest memories was when I dislocated my elbow on a punt block and got up with my left arm inside out and ran off the field to get it reduced. He called me and asked me to come see him the next week in his office. I was like, WTF?!? Anyway, I go to see him and he compliments me on getting up and getting off the field with any injury. Not doing so, he said, was a sign of weakness that the other team might sense, etc. He was hard nosed, but was unyielding when it came to Bison athletics.

RIP Izzy, and thank you from former NDSU athletes for all that you did!!

RIP Dr. Isrow. I was on a University Senate committee with him....he was the voice of common sense and reason and always looked out for the students. Enjoy watching the game in Frisco from heaven........I am sure they have ESPN2.

dont remember what class it was- i remember him walking into the middle of the desks and taking a hat off a students head and then talking for 10 minutes on respect.....then a baseball player walked in late and had a hat on- he slapped it off his head.
great guy - will be missed-have no doubt he will always walk the halls of NDSU

Sad to hear... Izzy was a true mentor before most knew what a mentor was. He towed the hard line, but was a caring individual. I still use the lessons he taught me to the students I teach (and they don't like it either). He will be missed. My thoughts & prayers go out to Gerry and family.

Anyone know of any funeral details? Where can I send my condolences to Gerry?

I didn't have Izzy as a teacher or mentor, but I did play a lot of basketball with him when I was in grad school, both at the old fieldhouse (Benson Bunker before they remodeled it) and up at the BSA. We called it the old man's game, because it was. Bunch of faculty with a mixture of a few kids that could run a bit. He was a true gentleman and a great sportsman. Back then, we didn't keep score, just played for an hour straight, subbing in and out as we needed. It was a great game, great exercise, with a great group of guys (and one ornery lady from plant science). I miss that game.

It might sounds silly now with how common it is, but I remember being told that back in the day, he was a pioneer in the treatment of sprains and muscle pulls using a combination of heat and cold therapy. Things we take for granted today, he was working on perfecting 50 years ago.

Anyway, a great Bison, hall of famer in so many ways, and one hell of a good guy.

The following information is from the website of Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home in Fargo:

http://www.hansonrunsvold.com/obituaries/Denisizzy-Isrow/#/Obituary

Friday December 21st: Visitation from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at St. Mary's Cathedral in downtown Fargo [604 Broadway].

Friday December 21st: Vigil Service at 7:00 pm also at the St. Mary's Cathedral.

Saturday December 22nd: Funeral Service at 11:00 am also at the St. Mary's Cathedral.

I did not see any specific instructions for sending honorariums. If anyone comes across that information please add it here.

Just want to add here that Izzy's wife Gerry is also a big part of the Bison extended family. She is a lovely woman that was often seen at Izzy's side. In her eyes, I could always see the love, pride, and support that she had for her husband.

My dad was a long time hs track coach and I remember tagging along to all the meets as a kid and many times I would hear the coaches talking about some Izzy guy. He definitely had the utmost respect from the hs coaches in ND and passed on a ton of knowledge.

Wonderful way to honor Izzy! I'd love to see buttons made. Izzy was a great man, my wife and I were lucky to have him as a professor at NDSU.

RIP Izzy.

Go Bison!

The visitation service was lovely this evening.
There was an open mic opportunity and several attendees regaled us with stories about the Wizard of Iz.

Reminder that the memorial service is tomorrow morning at 11:00 at the St. Marys Cathedral on North Broadway.

Dr. Isrow's Funeral was well attended.
He was a tremendous man whose blood was as green as anyone who has ever roamed our campus.
Rest in peace, Denis.
