View Full Version : NDSU vs. UND

Bison03
12-07-2012, 06:42 AM
I know everyone is focused on football right now, and rightfully so, but lets talk about the other big game at the dome this weekend. UND is 1-5 and coming off a buzzer beater loss in Brookings and a 3 point loss vs KC. NDSU is 7-2 coming off a big road win vs the non stop press of Moorhead St.(KY). Get your tickets as the home court should be rockin. Hopefully the FB team will win to prevent the buzz kill atmosphere that existed 2 years ago. UND's Troy Huff is out which is big. He is their best scorer. I like our big guys to dominate down low. If Braun is his normal self, it will tough to stop him. Should be a close game but I'll take the Bison winning.

Bison: 70

Looking forward to the game. I like what I have seen from NDSU this year and I guarantee the players haven't forgotten about the debacle last year. UND is struggling and cant win on the road. Look for Kading to bring down the dome with a couple thunder dunks.

UND: 56
NDSU: 75

I'm not as confident about this game as I'd like to be. Then again, the only game I've been to this year was vs UWGB which obviously didn't go well. I also turned on the web stream of the Morehead State game when the game was in hand, so I watched our lead go way down. We need a lead early, and we need to keep energy the entire game.

UND will likely struggle without Huff (their best player). His defense on Braun last year visibly frustrated him. He was held to about half of his season average in scoring and it was a large part why UND won. Despite that, I could see this going either way, both teams have shown the capability to go on cold streaks shooting, but I would give the advantage in this game to NDSU.

I am going to predict a loss because last year everyone expected the Bison to win and we ended up embarrassing ourselves. After that loss the Bison season went completely downhill. Hope I am completely wrong and the Bison win.

Bison playing with a lot of confidence it seems right now.

I like NDSU to win this one by 10 or so. A lot of it depends on our outside shooting. Would love to see a couple of Trayvonn thunderdunks early to get the crowd rocking.

Also, hope to hear the dome get rocking with the Whioux Suck Shit cheer, as well as the HEY! Whioux Suck!

When has the dome ever been rocking for a basketball game? It can't be done. No matter how loud the crowd tries to get it gets lost in the dome. Just a horrible basketball venue. In my opinion this game needed to be at the BSA. I understood it a couple years a go, you were going to make a splash and give away enough tickets to make a record but that was then.

Still hoping for the best but I don't know if I can't bring myself to watch this game in silence at the dome, probably check it out on TV or stream. This is a MUST game at the BSA . . . not so much at the dome. I hope this is the last time this game is played there.

Huff's defensive effort on Braun was exceptional; who will the Whioux assign to guard Braun Sunday? Huff only had 2 pts. (I believe) in the last meeting. Probably Huff was too tired to score after expending so much effort to guard Braun.

I wouldn't compare this team with last year, we got rid of some problems and added some players that make us much better(Brown and Kading especially). Plus Tray has been a much more consistent player which is huge.

I'll enjoy the comfortable seats at the dome... agreed though dome sucks as a venue, it would have been a rowdy 6500 in the BSA though and wouldn't have to worry about the rest 3500 being sold for the dome.

Oh yeah, I forgot, it was probably Sauls doing to put it in the dome in the first place. He can't get anything right.

I might seem like a downer but until NDSU basketball is on the map I won't be satisfied. I might be harsh but the upper midwest is starved for a quality basketball team (and quality college basketball entertainment) and I don't see any reason it can't be NDSU.

I want this team in the running to win the Summit every year!! Not every fourth year.

NDSU moves to 8-2 and will play the goofs on Tuesday on the BTN. Played well on defense but struggled right away on offense, seem to be standing around and took while to get into groove. Second half was a much better effort. Games needs to be at the BSA, was very dull but some of that goes on how many whistles their was, never got any flow in the game. UND does not know how to set a proper legal screen, they move all the time on them.

Sorry but the Bison are playing defense at a very high level right now, if you can't see that you don't know a thing about basketball.

Maybe you were distracted by what the score said, rather than what actually happened: we were standing around, applied very little pressure to the ball, and were continually beat off the dribble.

I'd say they play good man d .... Weak side help I don't know.....full court d we don't play it was a ugly basketball game..... The least joyous 20 point win I may have ever seen

Full court d...we should, we are in college.

We don't really pressure the ball a lot, we are a half court team through and through. We did get beat occasionally off the dribble I guess but for the most part our defense did what it is supposed to do..force the other team beat us by making mid-to-long range jump shots.

Only UNI held UND to fewer points scored.

After reading that, I was thinking hes someone who just doesnt understand the game at a Division 1 level. His comment about team free throw average being c pretty much solidified that.

It is a rivalry game and both teams had to adjust to playing in the dome so I am not surprised it took us a while to get settled in. Plus UND might be a bit better than their record, they just can't close games out. They had SDSU beat in Frost Arena and choked the game away.

Things my B Squad girls (all 7 of whom are in 9 th grade) do better than the Bison:
-don't take forced shots
-man to man d
-weak side help on d
-full court d
-zone
-grab boards instead of swat
-cut to the ball

Things my girls do equally as bad as the Bison:
-stand around
-set screens to air
-moving screens
-driving the opposite ways of the screen
-free throws

For playing a team who was 1-5 coming in and who embarrassed us last year, my one word description of this win:
Unimpressive

In basically every defensive stat we rank in the top 50 out of 340 some teams. The only one we don't is steals. We are holding teams to under 60 points a game and playing at a very high level on defense. If someone is complaining about the defense with this team then it really just shows A) have really really high expectations or B) are bitching for the sake of bitching and dont know much about basketball.

With some comments here, you would think we lost by 40 points. Defensively we were all over them blocking shots, forcing turnovers, forcing them to take bad shots. Offensively we dominated down low and were dropping a lot of threes. And the most impressive stat; we WON THE GAME BY 20 POINTS!!!

The student/fan reactions in the past two years pretty much sums it up. Last year: UND wins a close game at home, their students rush the court like they are going to the Big Dance. This year: NDSU wins by a significant margin, fans/students applaud the effort and take it for what it's worth. Just another W under our belt.

We were better at all 5 positions on the court at all times. Their bigs were in the game to be physical, because they don't have the ability. They also must not have a weight room. That is the skinniest team in America. Someone steal the key to the hockey weight room so they can have a night during the hockey initiation party.

The refs were so bad tonight it hurt. It was tough to watch. Both sides. They stole the atmosphere from the game. Both teams in double bonus with 8 to play in the second half. I hope they fail on their grade, because that was as bad as it gets. They would miss Felt getting mugged on a 3 point shot, then call a guy for breathing on someone. Both ways the refs stunk. Getting really tired of watching poor refs get away with that stuff. Keep that game away from the Dome. That game belongs in the BSA.

NDSU missed everything they looked at in the first half. I was not worried in the least bit, as we got any shot we wanted. Easy shots. We dominated that game. Better athletes, bigger, stronger, faster. It was impossible to get into the game as it was so stale. Rivalry is dead. Too bad that this win will hurt our RPI and SOS because UND is so bad. Almost impossible to get into a flow with the refs thinking everyone paid to see them tonight. Only 6 turnovers was very clean for the type game that was played. Marshall needs to be more selfish in these type games, as they pounded it to him every posession on that same set play and he continually got what he wanted or passed out. Foul trouble took both teams out of a regular rotation. Game would have been better if they reffed themselves. Sad to see the rivalry disappear.

This is an excellent post. It is still a rivalry in the fact that this is the #1 team we cannot lose to. It is not a rivalry in a fact that if we win, it is expected. SDSU is our rival in hoops in the truest sense of the word where it's a big deal no matter who wins.

It isn't a rivalry when the two sides don't see the game as equally important. When it becomes a game where the Bison actually win, then it will be closer to a rivalry. Like you said, beating the who is expected. SDSU is becoming our rivalry in many more ways then the who could ever attempt to recapture. No matter what sport, the bunnies and the Bison play hard fought games. In a couple of sports we play the who because we feel almost sorry for them. So I agree very much in what you are saying. We have to beat the bunnies to get ahead. We lose to the who and while it becomes their greatest victories in school history, it is just another non-conference game that is relatively meaningless in the big picture. Since it would take an act of god for the summit to get an at-large bid in march, conference games are the only ones that really matter.

I was at the game in the Fargodome 2 years ago and despite the fact that it was the first time in years that NDSU and UND had played, it had NO feeling of a rivalry game at all. The crowd was dead and it was just a non-conference game against a lesser quality opponent. Hardly a game that would have any influence on the post season chances of the Bison. It is an ok game to play because they are close and a D1 opponent. But Rivalry? Not in the least.

Basically agree with that. Let's face it, there were about 5,000 fans there. NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE IN EITHER FANBASE CARE.

It's still football season in Fargo and basketball isn't on the radar yet (if it ever will be). It's already hockey season and DU was in Grand Forks over the weekend. That's what THEY care about.

The Fargodome is a horrible place to play a game in front of 5,000 fans. I know somebody will try to convince me that we really do care about basketball. Well, the proof of the opposite can be seen by looking over at the BSA. Every day that goes by without progress in fixing that blight on the landscape is a stark reminder of just how much we really care.

Couple things to take away from this game:
1) We won by 20 in an ugly game, that was boring to watch because the refs were stopping play every 30 seconds, but we won a game we were supposed to win and we won fairly easily.
2) This game needs to played at the BSA. 2 years ago everybody was bummed out with the playoff loss and the atmosphere sucked even though there were 9,000 people there and yesterday everybody was too hungover to really care that much about a boring game. Having the students behind the basket and that far from the court really takes them out of the game. Doesn't matter who we play the dome is just not a good basketball arena, we should never play a home game anywhere other than the BSA as much as it sucks as an arena in general, it's set-up well for basketball.
3) Our defense continued to be awesome, our length is giving people fits. For a brief couple minutes at one point in the game when LA got in foul trouble we had Braun, Brown, Tray, Kading and I believe it was Aaberg at that point. Not a player on the court shorter than 6'6" that can be tough to score on. There's no doubt Kading has added a whole new dimension to this team and it's been great for our defense.
4) We are 8-2. One of those losses being against the #1 team in the nation, we haven't been winning pretty every game, but we have been winning. A couple of big road games this week followed by Morehead St. and SDSU at home to close out the month. I'm very hopeful that we can go into the new year at 11-3 which would be a really great start for this team. By the time we play our first home weekend set in Summit league play football season will be over, if our fans take a peak at our record they could see something as good as 13-3 by then and as it's been stated, if you win, they will come. So let's keep winning!!!

Taylor Braun recorded a team season high in field goals attempted with 19.
The Bison have won 100% of the time this season (4-0) after recording 15 or more free throws made.
This was the 5th blowout win this season (a win by 20 or more points). Over the past 5 seasons, NDSU has been on the winning end of 37 blowout games.
NDSU beat the spread by 4.0 points. That makes the 6th time this season the Bison have beaten the spread.

Thanks, now I see (read) it. Thought the Coach was talking of one conference in the future, that both teams were contending for. So that makes this a bit of a zinger from Coach Phillips to UND, implying that they won't contend for the Big Sky this year - since he thinks the Bison are Summit contenders. Even though the Big Fluffy conference season has yet to start.....:)

I don't know...that was kind of my next step. I was thinking of writing a letter to NDSU describing these and other events. Not sure where to sent it though.

Why not ask NDSU to reimburse you for the money you spent not getting the game and the time you spent screwing around trying to get an answer. If everyone went straight o NDSU after a day where the feed was down there would be a lot more action that contacting a large national corporation that could give a carp about NDSU's fans.

you should start a thread on your hospitalization

I don't want to, I'm currently on an "up-time" where I've gotten over my infection and have yet to receive the next chemo infusion. But I'm scheduled for the next one tonight. The point is that when there's sufficient chemo in my body, I feel like I don't want to do anything at all, including posting. That's why my posts have increased the past few days, cause my health is on an upswing. Also, this is a very complex procedure I'm going through that takes two months and has a lot of health upswings and downswings.

When I have called neulion in the past they have extended my contract a month. They have done that a few times. But this time they didnt even care.

They have never been helpful when I have called in the past when I lived in Nevada. After a while, I just had to give up....Thankfully I moved back to be able to go to every home game.

Not having Huff to guard Braun like he did last year was a killer for UND (22 vs 8 points). Brekke, who had 17 last year against NDSU and is UND's best post player, going out with a concussion from an inadvertent elbow 3 minutes into the game pretty much sealed UND’s fate. Brekke’s absence gave NDSU a major advantage of the boards, particularly the offensive end. UND looked bad in the first half and terrible in the second, they didn’t adjust to the reffing nor Brekke’s absence along with just getting outplayed. Good win for the Bison.

Yeah, Bison outplayed UND for most of the game, but the Bison know how to win games this year while UND hasn't figured that out ---no surprise

Hey, I know I missed it, but what injury does Lindberg have that is keeping him out?

Actually, redshirting is a good idea if indeed that is what's happening. Give Z this year's minutes, and Lindberg the following year.

Also in the Forum article:

And believe it or not, there was not one derogatory Sioux chant.

Bummer for Kevin, he had to scrap his entire pre-written article about how outraged everybody should be.

Actually the one time the pep band played the "Hey" song. Some of the students shouted "Hey Sioux Suck" (heard it as they sat just to my left in front of me) but may have been somewhat drowned out by the cheerleaders saying "Hey GO STATE" in the megaphone.

Apparently the game was so boring that Midco had to interview I assumed must have been a football player? Forgive me if I don't recognize faces... probably someone I should know too I'm sure! While the game was going on.

Nator missed out on winning the bucket of wings again! :) (aforementioned interviewee was the winner)

kvrr interviewed some freshman about the rivalry. they asked him how it would go if we played in football this season. his response: "it would be a good game"

funny thing during the game there wasnt much time left maybe around a minute we got an offensive rebound and it was kicked to vandenberg on the wing. the shot clock restarted cuz it hit the rim. he was wide open and the coaches and players were yelling at him to shoot the three. he didnt. thought that was kinda funny. no mercy when you play und
