View Full Version : Who is our rival?

This has been brought up in other forums, this article kinda sums up where we're at in terms of caring about UND.

http://www.inforum.com/event/article/id/381834/group/Sports/

(1) Our team watched a documentary to see what the rivalry was
(2) A former coach addressed the players so they knew there was a rivalry
(3) “Just so they understand the North Dakota State and University of North Dakota rivalry,” said Bison head coach Carolyn DeHoff.

I really don't think it qualifies as a rivalry if you have to explain that it exists and show a video to try to convince the players.

I compare our women's basketball program to the Jacks, and it doesn't look good. If our leadership is comparing our program to UND, no wonder we're going the wrong direction.

That article is from the players perspective.

I would say that rivalries are far more about fans than players.

Which is why for me, someone in my early 40's, UND will always be our most hated rival.

And I am not trying to stir the pot, but IMHO the quicker we get back to playing them regularly, the better off we will be.

Furthers proves that by having more north dakota players, they care more. Obviously the Bison team with players all over the nation couldn't give 2 shits about the game or no more than any other. The fans do and some north dakota players do.

Probably cause they haven't played in a game against them yet. I'm guessing after tonight, win or lose, the players will understand as well who the true rival is. I'm thinking Coach Dehoff showed the video so they understand the magnitude of this game. Its not a regular non conference game and to be honest, if Coach Dehoff loses, it further puts her job on the line. If she can somehow win, the seat cools off for a week or so. Players learn pretty quickly, no matter where they come from or what program they play for, you do not lose to UND. If the girls lose tonight, the lose will sting more tomorrow than any lose ever will to the Jacks, regardless of where they came from.

I'll be honest. I have zero interest in this game between two struggling teams. Drawing any parallel between this game and the rivalry games of years gone by will be a huge stretch.

The article makes no sense as Dehoff last year or the year before said the players know about the rivalry and the importance of the game etc. Another great job by the foolum looking for a sound bite.

And that is a sad state of affairs right there, is true and is telling in terms of where the program is at.

Best thing about this game: If the Bison finish this game as bad as they've started it, DeHoff won't last the season. Hell, maybe not the weekend.

When the team is worse than the sum of its parts, that is usually coaching. At the end of last season a change was needed. I was hoping some of the assistant changes would make an impact. It does not seem so. In general, we do not have a defensive effort that can stop anyone. That's where it starts. Painful, yes.

MN_BISON
12-01-2012, 01:54 AM
UND = quicker, stronger, faster than SU. Better coached too. Hmmmmm, who would let their team get down 13 in a "big" game before calling a timeout? Don't get that. I also don't get why I'm posting...........

it was bad that they had all there bigs on the bench, but it was also bad that in the first part of the 1st half nobody seemed to want to take a shot or move to get open to take a shot except DeGagne who clanked everything in the 1st 10 minutes... if they hadn't put themselves down by 18 in the 1st half would have been a much better game... but man oh man to think how far both of these teams have fallen. I wonder if all the alumni women bball players there had one big collective .

I agree lots of injuries, but we have not improved forever and you can't blame injuries every year. Well unless we hired the twins medical staff.

She needs to go otherwise we are going to be so irrevelant that we may never get out of this hole.

All of the Bison's athletic programs have taken the 'next' step in this D1 era except WBB.

DeHoff has had plenty of time and has not gotten it done....period.

Time for her to go.

Interesting read in the forum. In the 90s the UND/NDSU WBB games ave 5800 fans for those games. 2700 last night.

Here is a pretty interesting fact that proves how far this program has fallen.......WBB averaged 866 fans last year.....wow is all I can say.

Oh ya, UND got their 1st win last night....

janae burich who is/should be our starting #5 (6'5" and has played well) ali browning (usually F but think they could have used her as #5 as she has some height/size) Catavia Jones usually backs up Janae but she was out also on crutches. They also have Miki Stephenson, I think she just didn't pan out to be a good #5... guessing may have been coaching??? She seemed to have some potential but DeHoff didn't put her in until the 2nd half?? and she looked lost out there imo so not sure what's going on with her, can't remember who the 4th player who was injured??

What do post players have to do with our on-the-ball defense? It was horrendous.
Shot selection (bad!).
I expect DI ball players to understand the game situations better than what we saw.

Its been this way the last five years. I don't even attend games anymore because I can't stand to watch such poor basketball. I have been on the fire DeHoff bus for over three years. Why she is still coaching NDSU is the major question. Lynn, seriously why do you allow her to coach?

I want Lynn or anyone to name one thing she has done to improve WBB at NDSU...

Oh wait I have one....She keeps improving on excuses.....:facepalm2:

Its the body of work over the last 3+ years. To many excuses and not enough results. Win/lose to UND I don't care it is one game but just look at the whole dang season. This program is in shambles with no light at the end of the tunnel.

Kahla Becken, soph. guard, has concussion symptoms after a flagrant foul
late in the no-names game on Friday. She didn't make the trip to No. Colo.
Kahla is a backup guard and does get minutes.

She took their shot, wiped off the blood and made 2 foul shots. I actually thought she would be replaced due to the injury.
It was definitely a hard shot, but definitely not intentional, but clearly a elbow to the face . Intentional by rule.
