A few things come to mind when I look at these polls and consider some of the games that have been played to date. First, MVFC is tough, very tough!! I think the Big Sky is down this year, and would not at all be surprised if the Who finish 1-3 in the conference (that's how down I think the BSC is) and possibly make the playoffs. Also, we just need to get through the MVFC schedule fairly unscathed, with a decent playoff rank, and we can make another NC run. That's how i see things now.

Two comments:

1. I agree on this ISU-r stuff. I just can't figure out why they get so little respect. I would not be at all surprised if robbed again of playoffs.
2. CAS, are you coming around on this team? That was quite a positive statement. You seeing something out of that O line that has you hopeful?

I am still very concerned about our MVFC schedule, but I was fairly (trying not to overstate things) impressed with our O-Line against CSU. I believe, however, that we have 2-4 teams in the MVFC who have better D-lines than CSU. That's why I said "if we can get through MVFC schedule fairly unscathed"--meaning 1-2 loses, especially when it seems the BSC is down and we have a history of beating, if not piss-pounding, the high-ranked teams from the east. In short, we need to get to the PO's with 1-2 loses max, and we have good chance of a NC run AS THINGS STAND NOW I SHOULD ADD!!

Agreed MVF will be brutal. While the UNI game will be tough, no doubt, I am getting more and more worried about the Youngstown game, even though at home. Further, we have to go to ISU-r this year....thank goodness SDSU comes to Fargo, or that would be completely set up as a let down game at the end of the season.

i think the top this season is going to be more cluttered then we've seen. i think us and shsu are the clear 1-2, although shsu beat a non DI team still remains to be seen, but doesnt look like there will be many dominant teams. ysu will be towards the top but big sky looks to be down. jmu will likely get crushed this weekend vs West Virginia, App St. and Georgia Southern already lost. just dont see many dominant teams towards the top right now

I'm disappointed in the SoCon this year, too. Georgia Southern didn't play as well in their game against the Citadel as the score would indicate and were sloppy as all hell. Chattanooga was supposed to be halfways decent this year but dropped an egg this past week. Furman dropped one to Samford in Week 1 and App might be the best team in the conference. I'd put them at ASU-Wofford-GSU right now, and only one of those is in my top ten so far. Even the CAA isn't looking like its old self. In any event, paves the way for MVFC teams to do their thing.

I predict we'll see four top-ten MVFC teams at some point this season.

Hambone
09-10-2012, 09:46 PM
It does appear that the MVFC is the strongest thus far in the early season. I have 4 in my top 11 on AGS (5 of my top 18). And I do agree that the Big Sky appears to be down a little, but it's mainly the top teams don't seem as strong but I think that the middle teams are pretty good. But no one compares to the MVFC as of yet.

CaBisonFan
09-10-2012, 09:49 PM
The MVFC was strong before we joined...but we've raised the bar. We see the result in MVFC games vs. the FBS.

We probably have 4 or 5 teams that could do some damage in the playoffs.

And Wisconsin also lost to Oregon State. Just because one team over-performs and another under-performs which leads to a narrow loss, doesn't mean that if we were to beat them 77-0 we would get any recognition.

I'd LOVE for FCS teams to have a shot at the top 25 rankings but it just isn't likely when we have VERY few ways to compare our teams to FBS teams outside of 1-2 FCB/FBS matchups per team per year.

I would ADD... as long as we don't keep having the injury troubles we seem to be having after 2 weeks... I don't think we can win another Natty if we don't have Marcus healthy all year.

On the bright side, when SDSU (CA) whips UND, SDSU (SD) will jump to #1 in the polls for beating the current #1 team in FCS (NDSU), who will drop out of the polls.

Like reformed said, the carryover is only until Sag has enough data from the current season. If you go to the USA Today page, you'll see this line:

The teams are NOT WELL-CONNECTED and so all three ratings are BAYESIAN.

Once he has enough data(around week 5 or 6), that line will change to:

The teams are now WELL CONNECTED and so the ratings are UNBIASED.

Here's Sag's explanation from the page:

For the first few weeks of the season, the starting ratings have weight
in the process(BAYESIAN), but once the teams are all WELL CONNECTED, then
the starting ratings are no longer used and all teams are started equal
and the ratings are then done in an UNBIASED manner from that point on.

True this, Tony. Unfortunately, there are people who vote in polls who are geographically challenged who confused NDSU with the "Toe-to-Toes" football team from El Forko Grande.

With the "toe to toe" loss UND had yesterday, and us on a bye; let's hope a repeat of last year does not occur.

I wouldn't doubt this happening; Heck, if you check out egriz.com, even egrizzers get the Bison confused with the Toe-to-Toes; don't believe me? Check out the thread "Final Big Sky Scores Week 3........... and und is in their freakin' conference. WOW !!

Hell, I live in NJ and know Grand is an hour or so north! I know what you guys go through though: case in point Saturday's Phila. Inquirer had a game preview of Lafayette-Penn and the location was "Fisher Field, Bethlehem PA"...Right field, wrong city >> we're in Easton, PA, about 10 miles east of Bethlehem, home of our Lehigh brethren.
