Faison also announced that Michaels and long-time color announcer Mike Berg will have a new sideline reporter to work with as Brian Shawn will join the radio broadcast team for the 2012 season. The former KVLY sports reporter out of Fargo recently worked the sidelines for Midco Sports Network’s coverage of the North Dakota Shrine Bowl on July 14.

"I am thrilled to join Jack Michaels and Mike Berg on UND football radio broadcasts this fall,” Shawn said. “It's going to be a very exciting season with the team opening up play in the Big Sky Conference."

Shawn is currently working as a communications and community relations specialist at Globe University/Minnesota School of Business in Moorhead. The ***2002 UND graduate***won a “Teddy Award” for best sports reporter in the state of North Dakota in 2010.

He might be a UND guy but he seemed very fair and balanced when he was on TV. I even got the sense that he pulled for NDSU.

You can't seriously be hating on the guy that absolutely loves NDSU Athletics?? C'mon, B Shawn will do an incredible job! Guy absolutely bleeds NDSU Athletics now after covering them for years! BTW, I gave you guys what they would call a scoop in the business ;)!

Yeah, it always seemed like Brian actually enjoyed covering the games, much like Kolpack and Hallstrom.

Did you not read Slick's post? He is already sideline guy for UND radio broadcasts.

Unless he backed out to take the Bison gig, which would be cool. If you watch the Walker-Heckendorf pass in the 2007 SHSU game, you can see him being pretty pumped up on the sideline.

Did you not see that NDSU football is the premier sporting event in the state and he would be doing the play-by-play instead of just being a sideline reporter?

I doubt it took much convincing to pry him from a program with $60 season tickets and that subsidizes it's charter flights by selling the spare seats (and possibly any spare luggage space).

Don't tell that to UND hockey fans. Tried telling them on SS.com that und hockey and NDSU football are relatively similar as far as popularity and they seemed to think I was nuts for believing that the premier football program in a football state was a big deal.

What is the problem up there? Isn't there enough play by play guys so that each DI university can have their own announcer? Eddie Schultz apparently started something when he changed allegences. I just don't understand why one guy has to do both and especially when he is a UND grad. This doesn't likely happen anywhere else in DI football.

I have to admit that the media business is strange. Just a couple of weeks ago Shawn was saying how excited he was to be able to do the sideline reporting for his alma mater UND. From what I have heard he is truly a UND fan. There have definitely been a few media people that have jumped back and forth between UND and NDSU over the years. For the most part they all seem to be quite professional about it.

Actually the best play by play is going to be someone who is good at it and sincerely is a fan of the school he is covering. Total BS that NDSU has to have crappy UND grads taking care of media.

If a particular market only has a limited amount of prequalifying activity, like in this example schools; then the talent you can recruit from will suffer from the same limitations. I don't think there should be a media program in th nation who looks at alma maters when selecting people to call games. Other than in the sense if they have meet that qualification. If he was the most qualified due to experience and other factors, than he was a good hire. There seems to be a lot of people hung up on some fairly petty misconceptions. I would certainly like to see these jobs go to Ndsu grads, but I'd this guy was the best candidate then we got the best deal.

I've got no problem with it. Where a guy went to school doesn't have anything to do with the job they do in the booth.

What you said certainly makes it more enjoyable if you are a fan of that team.

It isn't a problem at all if you're talking about TV where you are watching the same thing.

I never trust "homer" announcers on the radio.

BTW, Scott Miller started as a UND play by play guy. Jack Michaels has a soft spot for NDSU and I don't hear too many complaints from UND fans. It can be done.

A soft spot? He played baseball for the Herd and is an alumus...I'd say its more than a soft spot, lol.

its ok Aces........the last three posters would argue against me if I said the sky is sometimes blue. It never ceases to amaze me how much some posters here gang up and take sides.
All I was saying is it would be nice to have someone other than announcers with UND root calling NDSU games........and I believe it does make a difference if an announcer is a big fan of the school he is covering.......especially in college football.

I'm not arguing the opposite. But, I would say that a total homer on the radio is useless. Paul Allen for the Vikings is an example. I've listened to him and then SAW the replay and found huge differences.

Would you rather have Scott Miller or Jack Michaels for our radio broadcast? I ask because Jack has direct ties to NDSU.

What's funny to me is that I read this part of your post and assumed that it was someone else calling you out on being so pissy again. There's a word for that, I think...

I love listening to PA on the radio. Then I see the replay of the game and I wonder WTF was he seeing.

I have it on good authority that Scott Miller was TOO PROFESSIONAL to stick in Grand Forks. Big win for the Bison in the long run. I'll take Jack back any time too.

Not even taking into account any homerism, I'd rather have Scottie calling the play-by-play simply because he calls the game better. Michaels would make a decent sideline reporter, but his pbp ranks pretty close to Dan Hammer.

I like Shawn. Could care less if he went to UND. Scotty once did UND and he is good. Big Eddie switched to UND and hes still good. Michael's is not a UND homer and does a great job. I dont think Hammer went to UND and he sucks for both team's. Now Dom Izzo has no ties to either school. Hes from out east. Did you hear him on the Bison Sioux basketball game? I vomited in my mouth

These are the 2 biggest jobs in the state. There will always be cross over. Its business. Not personal

Shawn is much better than the previous play by play guy, I'm sure many here wish Hallstrom would come out of retirement but honestly this is the next best thing.

B Shawn will absolutely kill it, guy is the consummate professional and loves NDSU athletics.
BTW, Jack Michaels is not only a great dude, guy bleeds Green and Gold! He's a hardcore rube just like the rest of us. How can't you love his "track it down Marge!" especially when the line came from after he hit a homerun against Oklahoma and his mom somehow beat everyone to get the ball!

B Shawn is definitely an upgrade. I like the hiring. I've seen him at the last couple spring games stocking up on NDSU gear at the Locker Room Sale. I actually listen when hes on the Michaels show, it's more my forte than Jack.
